My beach house living room, again — progress

last year

Remember this?

https://www.houzz.com/discussions/6394394/my-awkward-beach-house-living-room

Well, I have made some progress.

The cute floral chairs are gone. They went to a good home and I believe they’ll be happy there. They stayed in the neighborhood, too, so I could visit if I wanted to.

There is a new end table next to the sofa, which only happened bc I moved one of my dad’s tables to my LR at home … but I think it looks perfect with the coffee table. The lamp is also from dad’s apt and I was thinking of painting it (as well as the floor lamp, which was recently relocated from home) but I think the black is fine. I do want to get new lamp shades, though. What do you think? Looking at pics now, I am not sure if I like the lamps together. Maybe a table lamp with a more plain base? Or maybe they’ll look better with matching shades?

Disclaimer, I am sick as a dog and have no energy to make these pics pretty, so ignore the mess.

The big purchase will be here in a month or so. We ordered a ”chair and a half” and matching ottoman. Here is my scientific way of visualizing the size.

In this indigo color.

Here is current view from my perch on the sofa. Bugs (pictured) and his sister have requested that I place a big dog bed in front of the fireplace. (The round green table is still here, with a leaf down and pushed against the wall opposite the front door.) PS we don’t use the FP; it’s gas and I’m not even sure if it works any more. But if we get it working again, the dogs would be so happy.

Molly Mutt has dog bed covers that are sized for crib mattresses, which I think is brilliant! That size would be almost as wide as the FP but only 26” deep so plenty of space to walk around it, but that might be too big. I mostly like the idea bc the bed would be too heavy for the dogs to drag around the house.

This cover is fun, but the tropical style doesn’t really make sense. I am obsessively searching for the right thing.

Oh, and I have pillows on order:

FINALLY…I didn’t think I wanted a rug, but now I am thinking a large (9x12) from the sofa to the chair area would help to anchor the seating area BUT I want it to be very subtle, almost matching the floor color, so probably a sisal or seagrass …or even an outdoor rug that mimics sisal (see: dogs).

This one seems like a possibility.

Ballard has this one (not outdoor) with navy blue flecks.

Okay, toss your comments and suggestions in the ring but the chair is already ordered so don’t tell me not to get it. 😊

Those chairs are practically screaming BEACH HOUSE Sueb…. they’re calling for you!

Love those new sconces, great idea for a swap.

I actually have two of the armchairs in my ”real house” kitchen, so I know we like them. I just need to check with my loan officer. I mean DH.

  • last year

DH installed new sconces while I’m at adult art camp!

Minister of Finance AND the Minister of Lighting? You’re a lucky one!

I really love those, I think they add so much to the space. Bravo DH!

  • last year

    I really like them too!

The dogs would like to report that they like their new beds, too. Smaller dog always claims the bigger bed. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    Love the sconces

and I might want a dog bed myself! They look so snuggly!

Those sconces add so much to the room. Lighting has such an amazing transformative power in decor and so often overlooked. Very nice. And cutie patootie dogs also add so much to the space!

More baby steps…new lamp (thanks, Nicole!), lamp shades, and pillows. One of the print pillows will go on the chair when it arrives.

Rug is here, we’ve just been too lazy to ”install” it.

    Feel better, Sue.

Your beach house is looking better and better. Beautiful and restful.

    My ginormous chair is here!

As I anticipated, it dwarfs the low cabinets so now I want to find a tall bookcase for the wall behind the chair. I am looking for pine, like the wall cabinet, or similar. Or painted/something I could paint. (Although I’ve been busy painting kitchen chairs and front doors so I’m kinda over painting rn.

The chair is so comfy…looking forward to fall naps here (we hardly use this room in summer).

OK yeah-- that chair looks super comfy!

You may be able to make the existing bookcases work if you replace the current lamp (and maybe some of the other items) with something bigger? It is worth a try. I do like the color of the bookcases with the chair/pillow.

    Which lamp?

I am thinking about a floor lamp next to the chair.

LOL sorry-- I am visually impaired! Until I blew the photo up super large, I thought the fish sculpture was a lamp. Sorry for the confusion!

A floor lamp would be great ... I just think you need a little more visual weight behind the chair. The fish sculpture works but needs another big friend.

Unless you want new bookcases .. which would look nice too :)

I love all of your choices. I was looking at the pic and diagram that Arapaho posted about an alternatiive placement of the sectional. I have a similar sectional, tho a bit larger and a bit larger alcove. I am able to place the sectional on either side wall with one section on the back wall. One way it faces out toward the room + the other side facing the windows. To switch it up, one part has to go with the back to the windows, which isn't ideal because looking out the windows from most of the seats makes the most sense. But I get tired of not being able to rearrange it once in a while.

I finally tried something that seemed like it wouldn't work but I love it. I put the curved section smack dab in the middle of the back wall so the sectional forms a U facing out in the room. It's like it's opened its arms to welcome you into the space I love how it looks and was thinking it might work in your space, if you'd be willing to try it. Then no part of the sectional is staring at a wall. I also have a large glass coffee table and it makes getting in to all the seats a bit easier.

Oly, can you share a photo? I am having trouble visualizing your arrangement.

Wait, I might have created a taller bookcase.

Okay - another unsolicited thought. Would the cabinet over the sofa fit in place of your “new” tall bookcase?

    Sueb20 thanked rubyclaire

Nothing more to add (or see incorrectly) ... but every time I look at your photos, I note how pretty the new colors are together and so perfect for a beach home!

    Sueb20 thanked Funkyart

Ruby, good thought but I don’t think it will fit. I’ll double check but I think it’s too wide.

Thank you, Funky, I am liking the colors too!

I would just add a floor lamp for height (try out the one you have). Maybe just one bookcase under the window or none at all if they’re not needed?

    Sueb20 thanked Kitch4me

I am starting to wonder myself about the ”not needed” part. I do feel like we need some sort of bookcase for books and puzzles. We used to have one in the other room but there is a desk/table there now and the bookcase has been moved to the garage because it doesn’t fit anywhere else (it is too wide for the space behind the chair.) But I do have one other spot for a bookcase, not seen in the pics. I need to think about this!

Okay, I cleaned things up and I think this looks a lot better. The blue cabinets have been disbursed throughout the house! One has puzzles in the tv/family room, one has books in the sunroom, and the other is back where it started in our bedroom.

I moved the little pine bookcase from our bedroom to the wall near the chair. It has our good ”browsing books” (local-themed books and cottage decor books) so you can reach over and grab one.

I am going out later to see if I can find a floor lamp at one of the local consignment shops or Home Goods.

    That looks great!

The little bookcase is perfect there! Good luck lamp hunting!

IDK, I remember when you moved the bookcases there, and I kinda grew real fond of that corner. (and yoru new sconces, YAY!!

I think the thing is , you kind of have to roll with the chair. It is overscaled, and there is no reason or need to apologize or disguise that. I am sure it will be well used and well loved!

In your new iteration, I would push the chair back into the corner. I know why you have it where you do, but still. Ya'll still have good hearing, right? : )

    Sueb20 thanked mtnrdredux_gw

IRL, the chair and cabinet situation just looked off kilter.

I can push the chair back a bit and see.

Got a thrift shop floor lamp! still in my car so I don’t have evidence.

I think tucked back a bit will make a spectacular reading/napping spot! Waiting to see the new floor lamp. You really don't slow down, do you? Planning a big birthday bash, a solo road trip and fluffing the beach nest. I'm following it all since I seem to have hit a planning anything wall of my own :(

I agree about chair pushed back into corner. It looks a bit off kilter. push it back as far as it will go, and line up the two back corners of the chair between the windows. Love the Lamp, then finding the perfect shade…you are a go getter! Kudos to dh!

I thonk what mtnand Ruby and I mean is this: make it a place of its onj, not an attempt to have it as a conversational companion to the sectional. Becauses it outsizes it, the appearance is awkward.

    Okay! will try it!

I do think that may be the best place to put the chair. It looks at home there, and what a wonderful place to sit, flanked by views from 2 windows. Do you feel it is too far from the sofa? It kind of becomes its own area which I like.

    Sueb20 thanked mtnrdredux_gw

No, it is not too far. And it feels cozy in the corner. It really is a super comfortable chair!

I am sitting on the sofa now (procrastinating on a rainy drive home):

The thing in the middle of the floor is the dog’s blankie, not a decorative accessory. And the red pouf is waiting for a ride, not staying here.

I loved the look of the bookcases, but I think this corner is going to become a favorite. You are going have to book spots on Resy to sit there.

    That looks VERY inviting.

Can you scooch the area rug toward the fpl, or will that mess up the other end?

If I scooch the rug, then it won’t be under the sofa legs (it is just barely under the front legs). I knew the rug placement would be imperfect no matter what, which is why I didn’t want a rug that called too much attention to itself.

Got it. I think it's time to get a nice cup of tea and take a well-deserved loaf on that thing.

    Sueb20 thanked mtnrdredux_gw

oh yes! It really does look like such a cozy spot ... really love all your recent additions most especially the chair/pillow and sconces!

    Sueb20 thanked Funkyart

That would absolutely be MY spot, and anyone (other than the grandchildren because they can do no wrong) would have to move to the couch when I entered the room. It's perfect!

Loving your room, Sue. Forgive me for being ”a .r” , but could you maybe skootch the chair a teensy bit to the right so it’s more perfectly aligned between the windows? Just my freaky need , probably, like tweaking wall art to straighten perfectly. 🙄

This might not leave room for that great lamp you found…leading me to another trivial thought: turning on the tall lamp while sitting in the chair isn’t possible. Would you consider going on another treasure hunt for this type. Just such a perfect reading spot, and this is a perfect reading lamp. Yes, I am “picking pepper from the salt”, as dh tellls me , so you may forget my butting in !
