Yes, more likely to be a lack of suitable pollination issue than anything else.

A hard rain at the right time can wash the blossoms off.

I should have said there are various crabapples in the neighborhood, which do have fruits on them...surely they are ok for pollinating if they bloom at the same time?

In the neighborhood? Within 100 feet of your apple? At least two different kinds or a self pollenator?

Full sized ones - they are all over but not w/in 100 ft. There's a seedling in my yard about 75' away, that I'm letting stay for now. It's about 4-5' tall. Maybe weather conditions weren't as favorable for pollination this year.

That's why you aren't getting fruit. Your tree isn't getting pollenated, you were probably lucky with one last year. Your tree is not self-pollenating. You need at least two different non-triploid varieties and/or different self pollenating varieties within 100' of your tree for good pollination. Closer than 100' is better, that's just the max distance away you can get away with and still have decent pollination chances.

It isn't the weather, disease, or the pollinators. It's your lack of trees that's the problem. There's a lot of good trees on the pollinator lists for your tree, get a couple-few of them and plant them in.
