Design Advice Wanted - Kitchen Renovation

last year

I am in the process of planning a kitchen renovation and am looking for some advice on design/layout. I have been playing around in the Ikea kitchen designer and came up with the first two images below which have a very similar layout to our current kitchen, which I have also attached a couple of photos of.

Current pain points of our kitchen are the blind corner bottom cabinet to the right of the stove and our pantry which is 18” wide and 24” deep with shelving, making it incredibly hard to access items at the back. Of course, it’s a bit outdated too.

I have been toying with the idea of changing the layout and running cabinets all the way down the wall where the side window is located. My basement is unfinished so I can easily relocate the floor vent; however, the window is 19” from the floor so it would require brick work (and a new window), plus I am not sure we’d still have the room for a kitchen table.

Feeling a bit overwhelmed as this is my first renovation so would appreciate any advice/feedback or new ideas on how we can make the most of our space.

Your kitchen looks fine as it is. Perhpas you can get someone to install rolling shelves in your pantry.

Post the floor plan with measurements (top down view of your ikea planner design with inches added on)

And tell us more about your family, who cooks and how much, etc.

There is nothing wrong with a small kitchen, unless it's not working for you. What improvement are you seeking.

just a little note on the cabinet layout, for the drawers to the right of the sink, if you choose a new range you may need a bigger spacer to clear the handles and knobs. I had to use 6 inches (5 would have worked but felt too close).

I need a lot more info and a to scale floor plan . Do you need the eat in space for all those seats? What is in the soffit? Are those sliders used all the time to access the outside. The buget ? So much more info before anyone can help at all. The to scale plan on graph paper showing every window , doorway where thos elead every measurement clearly marked and nothing else in the plan unless it cannot be moved. Post here in jpeg format in a comment DO NOT start another post. Free advice her eis a huge plus IMO but do not take offence at some you do not like we all try to help.

Is this the only table space you have? Do you have a separate Dining Room elsewhere?

Do you use the sliding doors much? Could you replace them with a wall of windows in the same space? Maybe put a single door elsewhere to access the same outside area the current sliding doors access? (A sketch of the whole floor would be really helpful!)

If you eliminate the seating overhang, you might be able to get a bit more space in the Kitchen...but without measurements, I cannot say one way or the other.

As others have said, we need more information, including a sketch of the entire floor the Kitchen is on and a fully-measured flat/2d layout of the space. By "fully-measured", we mean a layout with the widths of each wall/window/door/doorway and the distances between each wall/window/door/doorway labeled. See a sample below. If something cannot be moved or changed, label it precisely on your layout (see post in sample) and tell us why it cannot be moved/changed -- we may have some ideas for you.

Another case of the disappearing OP

1- Consider adding floor to soffit cabinets next to the sliding doors, from door trim to corners. Shallow (12") cabinets will hold pantry goods, china, etc.

2- Move the fridge all the way to the end of the cabinet run. You will have more usable space to the right of the stove.

Thank you all for your comments and I apologize for the lack of information in my first post - this is my first time.

Here is the 2D image with measurements from the Ikea kitchen planner - this layout is almost identical to what we have currently so would not entail any changes to plumbing, etc. but our basement is unfinished so if those changes are required, it is easy for us to do so. The window that is captured on the bottom of the image above is quite large and sits 19” from the floor. Just to the right of the window in the floor is a vent (87.5” from the wall with the sliding door) which we could move if needed. The soffits above the patio door have ductwork in them but we are confident there is no ductwork in the soffits that are currently above the cabinets (10” high and we have 8 ft ceilings). Answers to other points made in the comments are as follows:

    • There is a door way on the left side of the image (beside fridge) that leads to our front hall. The opening at the top of the image leads into our living space and what was intended to be a dining room; however, right now we are using it as a lounge space due to the proximity of the kitchen table currently.
    • It is just my husband and I now but we plan to expand our family in the near future. We have two dogs and the sliding doors lead to our backyard so they are frequently used, to let the dogs out and for us to access our backyard/patio and barbeque. We are in Canada and spend a lot of time in the backyard during the spring/summer/fall.
    • My husband and both enjoy cooking and spend an equal amount of time in the kitchen. Though my husband tends to cook more on the grill (and cleaning the kitchen) whereas I will spend more time actually preparing food indoors.
    • The current area where the overhang is previously had stools and we never used them so losing that option is not a big deal to us.
    • We could easily relocate our dining area if that would allow us to accommodate an island/additional cabinetry.
    • Our budget is $30,000 CAD

I don’t think I’ve missed anything but happy to provide any additional information - again, my apologies for missing these details in my first post. I appreciate everyone’s willingness to help - the guidance and advice is very much appreciated.

There are great solutions out there for blind corner cabinets:

Hafele and Rev-a-shelf have lots of options depending of the size of your cabinets.

If you want two people (plus kids eventually) in the kitchen, an L-shape that goes into the current dining area all the way to the wall will be more practical than the U-shape you have now. A carefully chosen table may fit in the expanded kitchen. Pick some Ikea tables from the planner to try them out.

A tight U-shaped kitchen is both impractical and unpleasant for two people to use, even if one is only there to get a glass of water while someone else is trying to fix dinner.

This is the space we could repurpose into a dining area it is immediately across from where the table is currently

I worked on your kitchen plan - it was very similar to one I am doing for a customer. They are going to raise their window ( we are unsure about matching their siding, so they are considering a window box to help hide it ) .

I moved the sink under the window and put in an island ( if you move the table to the other room ) . Just something to help get your thoughts going!

I do not know if you can do this within your budget. That would be the next thing to look into.

    Good luck!
