Bathroom remodel with sinks not aligning with cabinets below

last year
last modified: last year

After 22 years, we are finally remodeling the floors and the bathrooms! The hallway bathroom has 1 large mirror for a double drop in sink setup over built in cabinets. I would like to update the ceramic countertop with some nice quartz, install 2 undermount sinks and replace the 1 large mirror with 2 fancier mirrors.

Dilemma:

1) If I have sinks cut in line with the cabinet doors, then the 2 smaller fancy mirrors will hug the side walls very close and have lots of space between both mirrors.

2) If I have the sinks cut at 2 inches closer towards the center, then I can install the mirrors further away from the side walls, but the sinks will no longer align with the cabinets below.

Which design option will be less noticable? Or any other thoughts or suggestions are always welcomed!

Context is key. Post up pictures or at the very least a scaled drawing and floor plan.

Call it OCD, but it would drive me nuts if the sinks weren't centered on the middle of the cabinet doors. Sink alignment first, then find a mirror or mirrors that will work.

No one will notice if the sinks aren't centered on the doors ... unless you have a toilet right across from it and have to spend time looking in that direction!

Looks like you did some cut and paste ... what are the mirrors on the side? If those are those old builder grade recessed cabinets, I would definitely consider getting rid of those. That is something that quickly dates a bathroom to the 1980s.

If you need more storage then consider using recessed medicine cabinets in front of each sink.

    Here are mine. Robern 24" W x 48" H recessed medicine cabinets.

That looks like a pretty old vanity. Why not replace it? It doesn't strike me as a good idea to put a new counter on an old cabinet. Is it as tall as modern ones? Unless you're short, the older, shorter ones are just annoying. If you got a different vanity you could have an opportunity for different sink placement. However, the center drawer section is very useful, so I would hesitate to move the sinks in and sacrifice drawer space. But I agree with the commenters that the mirrors shown aren't a good choice except in a powder room. If you do change to two mirrors you will need to move the light fixture so there is one fixture over each mirror. I wouldn't bother changing to two mirrors unless you change them to medicine cabinets.

I actually prefer one large mirror and in this case the mirrors are too fancy for the cabinets IMO.I aslo agree that cabinets is probably yhe old style at 30" instead of the new at 36" If you are going to redo the bathroom IMO then redo it all

I currently have a large mirror that covers the entire wall in front of this cabinet, unfortunatle its starting to show wear on the edges and thus thought about just replacing it during the demo. Cabinets are real redwood and match the rest of the house including stair rails and banisters, thus reluctant to replace just this hallway bathroom. The size of 70" wide is also difficult to find a prefab vanity to fit that is nice and not cheaply made.

The neighborhood consists of registered historical homes built in the 1900s. Even though my house was built in 2002, its in the same style of Queen Anne, thus not wanting to go too modern with any changes. I've actually replaced original items with things more towards the Victorian era while adding nice charm to the place.

I'd want to center the sink. How wide is the cabinet under the sink?

Would a less wide sink work? Would the center of the cabinet be 15 inches from the wall?

One cabinet under the sink would be 25.5". Yes, center of one cabinet would be 15 inches from the left wall. Sink basin is 19.5"

You have a 70 inch vanity. Align sinks to the cabinet . Buy a leaner mirror, 60/66 inches by 36 including frame. ONE MIRROR, FREE HANGING.

Keep the frame simple, no fancy schmancy.

Other wise? Replace the mirror you have.

There is nothing to cling to about that vanity and your home isn't historical @ 2002.

Or have it made and stained

Haha, yes, you are right. It is not historical, but in order for my home to be build across the street from the 100 year old homes, they had to have at least a Queen Anne exterior.

The answer is the same: )

If you are remodeling a bath I would not cling to that vanity and whether the same vanity or not.....ONE big framed mirror. ...as above. A leaner hung horizontally
