No concern for the foundation with respect to the shrubs.......but a potential concern if the soil was piled up against it to a height where moisture would penetrate. Also a potential concern for the shrubs themselves as to whether or not they would grow too large for that space.

Thank you for your response. Also do you know anything about if roots can pose a threat to damaging the foundation? I know those yuccas can have some strong roots.

If the foundation is structurally secure - no cracks, defects or crumbling, etc. - then there is minimal risk from a plant's roots, even those of big trees, causing damage. Nearly all damage to a structurally intact foundation is due to subsidence or the soil settling.

I can't get the deciduous shrubs in focus to id them but like GG I'd say the concern is for the shrubs but not the house. They'd suffer if they don't have room.

Also if the shrubs are under the eaves the soil will be very dry there. Watering them would wet the mulch beside your foundation - wet mulch is a big encouragement to termites.

They are exposed so that shouldn’t be an issue but thanks for letting me know!

I see a type of nandina … are the mounded ones dwarf yaupon holly?

I have both in various beds. The nandinas stay fairly small, but the yaupons will spread out quite a bit — they’ll definitely go over your border (if that’s what they are).

No issues with them and slab foundations … as gg said, it’s the soil. I’m in Texas, good luck finding a brick house without cracks somewhere!

I have clay soil which is awful. I know there’s not much I can do about that but I did make sure when I water these that the water drains down away from the foundation.

Are you in Texas? Or another southern state?

I have various types of clay soil, some areas with caliche, and some areas with ”construction debris the builder put topsoil over” soil. It was built in ’07 and I’m still digging fun stuff up.

Was I right about those being yaupons? One of my favorite tough-as-nails shrubs. :)
