Which black paint color for exterior railing

last year

Please help to suggest best black paint colors to refinish older iron railing for our front entry. We have a white brick home with dark charcoal shingle roof . There are 6 limestone steps leading to double dark walnut stained front doors. I look forward to all your suggestions in either in Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams paints. Thank you

Thank you, appreciate your quick reply

    Ok, thanks but what color!

  • last year

Rustoleum. Matte Black. Nothing shiny. Matte Black finish emulates wrought iron.

Thank you. I did not consider Rustoleum as the painter told me he will use an oil primer and suggested using a BM or SW paint such as iron ore(SW) or wrought iron(BM)
    Your comments are appreciated

IMO no to either of the choices from the painter metal needs a relly good metal primer and paint I agree a matte finish will work better and Rustoleum is a good choice as is Tremclad.

Thanks so much…will definitely look into both Rustoleum and Tremclad to see their color charts. Any preference on which color to use if I can find similar tones to the ones noted and am able to have them mixed to resemble the BM or SW colors?

You need to have the iron properly prepped, rust and mildew removed. Then a metal primer. Then a matte black paint, if you want it to look like wrought iron. In my experience, color mixing to match exterior paint colors isn’t done. PROs???

Agreed to all your prep steps. Thank you! But is Matte black my only choice or are there several black colors to consider?

are there several black colors to consider

Yes. Just like white and gray there are colors of black from every hue family. Typically Tricorn black is perceived as being the most neutral "just black" but if you wan to refine color harmony then you choose a black from the same hue family as a fixed element on the exterior so the colors relate.

If you get chips and line them up in this order, you can see the full spectral gradation. Except Green - there are no colors of black that belong to the Green hue family in BenM or SW.

Both SW and BenM have product recommended for ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Have to assume painter knows what he's asking for in terms of color because he's chosen the product already.

Hi Lori, thanks for your great feedback, I appreciate the detail of the color gradations and will try to get the paint chips as suggested. Will compare Tricorn black to others as noted.

Can you post photos so we're not wildly guessing?

Wrought iron on anything is not an item that gets colour matched. It’s supposed to be matte black.

Thank you for all who took the time to respond to me. I wasn’t looking to match the rail going up the front steps. Only wanted a nice contrast with our white brick home and a black that complements the dark wood front doors.

and a black that complements the dark wood front doors.

    It's a smart question.

Because what's wrong with all the black and white exteriors right now is everyone thinks black is just black. White is just white.

    Not true.

    So true!
