Please help with my kitchen! In distress!

last year

I replaced my floor and im afraid i may have mase a mistake and need help correcting. Can’t replace the floor so have to work with it. I believe my granite is st Cecilia. I believe the new floor is making my cabinets appear even more yellow than they were before (they were already yellowing due to age and wear in the kitchen - they are 14 years old). The previous floor was a very dated, scratched, discolored and dented Brazilian cherry.

I have a beautiful open space with a 12 ft vaulted ceiling and large windows and I want to love it again. I want an updated look but can not afford a full kitchen remodel - can’t replace cabinets and counters. I did just have it painted too in accessible beige and don’t think it’s working but would also love to try and make that work if possible with other updates, as painting the space is cumbersome and expensive and also the paint flows into the adjoining spaces/rooms. I Stopped replacing the hardware until I figure out what to do to make the space more modern and cohesive which is why there is a mix of brushed nickel/silver and oil rubbed bronze. Did not yet replace the pendants until I know what I’m doing with cabinets and adding a backsplash.

I really hope this can be fixed without tearing the whole thing out which isn’t an option 😢

any advice

?

The grey is definitely wrong. Let us see the rest of the room so that we can advise.

Agree with pal and yvonne, the wall paint is accentuating the yellow in the cabinets. The question is what do you do with striped floors and grey walls? How do you feel about painting your cabinets? The easiest way to have them look less yellow is to paint them a better white.

I think the flooring is quite decent with both the wood and painted cabs, so well done there. It's the wall paint. I know it's a pain to redo, but still less expensive than repainting the cabinets.

Aesthetic White might be a good choice.

the wall color is grey and more grey, its dragging the whole scene into a bad color mis-match.. looks like the every popular and boring agreeble grey

Removing the parts of the photo with wall color, I don't think the floor is making the cabinets yellow:

But look what is happening with the wall color, particularly over to the left: The cabinets look greenish yellow, the beige is skewing mauve.

Its a common mistake that people think because neutral colors are "neutral", they should mostly work together, but this is an example of them not working together.

☝️Well maybe, but the cabinets look yellow against the white ceiling color too, right? The cabinets look yellow because they are yellow. If you want them to look less yellow the wall and ceiling would have to contain more yellow. I don’t think you want that.

@eam44 so just paint the caninets then?

  • last year

Well either that or just live with it.

Painting cabinets that are not chipped or otherwise in need of a new finish is not really a great idea. You lose the factory finish and replace it with paint. But if it is driving you mad, paint the cabinets.

    @eam44 they came painted

First of all you have a great kitchen to work with. I think a good choice for a backsplash would help pull your various colors together. I've show you a couple, but there are a lot out there that would work.

The other things to me that are throwing off the look is the dining table and chairs color against the island wood stain. Too many things going on there. I'm not bothered by the color, but you could also change out the pendant globes to clear glass if you didn't want to lesson the yellow in the scheme. The ceiling fan style is also pretty modern for the style of the rest of room. And then area rugs also help pull things together.

I like your air fryer tucked over between fridge and stove best.

    Enjoy your new look!

@Emily i was trying to go more modern but agree the whole vibe is off

They came painted from the factory. Cabinet makers generally use a coating system called conversion varnish that is more durable than paint, but that’s neither here nor there. I recommend you take a beat.

Use the elements you are keeping and Google inspiration images using those elements. So google your counters and see what you find that you like.

    @eam44 found this

Oh good. OK, you like both of those kitchens.

I wouldn’t choose a bright white for your cabinets, and neither did they. The upper image has, basically, yellow cabinets like yours. The bottom image has off-white cabinets.

It is worth noting that both of those kitchens have very quiet backsplash tiles as well, a light cream arabesque and a light cream subway tile. This is Daltile Rittenhouse in Arctic White, but there are many more options. Price out the cabinet painting and see how much of a budget there is for tile.

Waiting costs you nothing, and it gives you time to get used to the changes you’ve made and plan your next move.

@eam44 thank you so much for all of your advice. i actually saved on my remodel relative to what my contractor priced out so now I am considering backsplash and cabinet painting. gonna check out your color suggestions above!

The cabinets are fine. Repaint the walls, since the color you have them painted doesnt really go with anything else anyway. Pretty floor.

I understand your concerns and willingness to work with your existing space. Let's break down the issues and potential solutions:

    1. Yellowing cabinets:

    - Consider refinishing or repainting the cabinets to a lighter, more neutral color to reduce the yellow tone.

    - Add a glaze or toner to the cabinets to shift the color without replacing them.

    2. Granite and floor combination:

    - St. Cecilia granite has a warm, beige background, which might be clashing with the new floor. Try to find common ground by introducing complementary colors.

    3. Accessible Beige paint:

    - It might be too beige-heavy in the space. Consider adding a statement wall in a bolder, contrasting color to create visual interest.

    4. Hardware and lighting:

    - Choose a dominant metal finish (e.g., brushed nickel) and replace the hardware consistently.

    - Select pendants that complement the granite and floor.

    5. Backsplash:

    - Add a backsplash that ties together the granite, floor, and cabinets. Consider a neutral color or a subtle pattern.

To modernize the space without a full remodel:

    1. Update the cabinet hardware and lighting fixtures.

    2. Add a fresh backsplash.

    3. Introduce new decorative elements (e.g., vases, artwork, rugs) in a cohesive color scheme.

    4. Consider a kitchen island or cart to add functionality and visual appeal.

The reason is doesn't work is becuase you have too many diff color/style items in here.

    Better?

Reds in the island and your dining table do not work w/the taupe/beige tones of the flooring. I gave you diff pendants, chairs, table/fan.

    Or, what about this one?

As you can see, once you bring in the right colored accessories it makes a huge diff in how everything looks.

I'd paint the island and get a diff table / chairs.

then bring in a tile splash somethng like this

That modern gray fan? no. does not work at all.

forget modern. your cabs are traditional. I gave you a better fan suited to your look. do you use the fan? make sure you buy one w/the proper blade length (you need something over 60") and make sure it isn't hung to high from the floor. if it's too high, it does no good.

Here's your countertop w/soft white cabs and ORB hardware, diff lights.

Painting those cabs will cost north of 6K if you want the job done correctly.

    Can you spend that much?

Here's your countertop w/a lovelysage color. what if you did the island in this shade?

This tile is from Arizona Tile. Concerto Pearl Gloss

Try painting your walls in a diff color. see if any of these work.

If you want to go w/some lighter, natural tones,

what about something like this? do the island in one of these 5 colors,

I gave you Hudson pendants in soft white and gold, natural chairs/table, and some tile splash options. Bedrosians has the Zinnia tile w/a few diff colors here:

    https://www.bedrosians.com/en/product/detail/zenia-tile/

I posted Solar and Umbra, diff sizes in the lighter ones.

with that color scheme I like this rug from Becki Owens. great colors

HU, lol, thank you . You just need a little tweaking. Paint (start w/the walls and the island. I don't think you need to splurge and paint the main cabs. ) trade in that rectangle dark dining table / chairs, for something more natural. like a white oak.

I did another one. I think I'm like the dark charcoal (Like BM WRought Iron) w/your cabinets. gave you a natural round table w/marble top, diff chairs though

I like these black disc lights, they come in the white too. for sure I'd do soft gold/brass

could do a table like above, or something like this, w/the black chairs

I also like these natural textures w/your granite and cab color.

You could do something like this w/those lighter tones

But I'm really liking the dark painted island (you could maybe look into staining it an Ebony stain color. you'd have to look into that option) with this black/red rug and the natural tumbled marble backsplash tiles.

These round tables can be found anywhere.

here's a charcoal color island w/a darker runner. natural wood tones, gold hardware

I can't see the rest of your room so it's hard to say what goes w/what.

Look at this island and pendants. this is the look i'm going after (as far as design, not so much color). love these woven stools too. Pendants would work in your space. Make sure that your next ones aren't hung too high. No MORE than 36" from the countertop!

    Hope these help!
