We just bought this house and want to paint the siding hoping to tone down the orange rocks and not accentuate the copper roof hoping to do a white-ish color

Limewash the rock face. See example below.

You can paint the orange siding, but that's not going to affect the orange roof color

An off white color selected to match the few white stones will make the orange stone more prominent.

I'd pick a cream from the color of the rocks. That said, I love the colors now. They look really good together and are not typical or boring.

Paint all the trim, the siding and if you are up to it the windows. I can't figure out what the porch columns are, but I would definitely have them wrapped and painted brown, as well.

The front steps have to be stained another color...thinking about that.

I’d whitewash the stone. And paint the siding which looks like a clashing color.

But of course none of that hides the elephant in the room, the orange roof.

I do think Beverly's mockup of cream looks better than the current brown.

Have you considered a creamy beige color pulled from the stone? That might also make the overall look more subtle.

Thank you we bought the house primarily for the property i like to call the roof copper rather than orange as well ( not replacing that as there are 5 other structures on the property with this roof) i plan on wrapping the columns and getting a new door i just CANNOT figure out what paint to use my parents are building on the property and painting white, so hoping to do something similar

This might be a situation where more is less. Right now you have the coppery brown siding but at least it sort of blends with the roof. The more you paint the siding cream, even if it “ goes” with the stone, the more areas of high- contrast with the orange roof. So it’s possible that the closeup view of just some siding plus stone looks more blendy, but ghd overall whole- house appearance might not be better.

I love it as is. Why did you buy a house that's a color you hate? I mean the roof and rock are pretty permanent!

I'd individually "tan"wash the most orangey rocks and see if that makes the house more attractive to you. When you paint all the rock siding one color you'll lose a lot of the texture and depth.

Just my 2 cents. Consider painting the siding a color that looks best with the roof. Perhaps a grey/black. The idea would be to get the siding color balanced with the roof, with the intention of doing a limewash on the stone when ready. The roof is the boss here so siding should compliment it.

I’d go with an off-white, creamy color. No way would I touch that stone. I’m sure it’s a local stone, fits your house well, is wonderfully organic and earthy, has a lot of character, and is so much more interesting than the very overdone fad of whitewashing masonry.

Light colors look fine with copper roofs:

I’m in Texas, so see lots of natural stone that most people embrace … but I also see some horrible DIY attempts at lime-washing or painting it, which ruins it forever.

I have Austin stone on my house and fireplace, and actually wish it had more orange in it.

I would choose a cream color to go with the rock. Not white. You need something that will blend into the stone. The stone, appears on my monitor to have a more cream color in it, and I dont see any white.

it's not a crime to wash that stone, especially if you hate it.

    It's rock. it's nothing special!

The good thing about the Classico, is you have 72hrs to decide. paint it on one side, see what you think. if you don't like it, take the hose and wash it off.

if you do the stone w/a schmear or limewash (which btw, has no upkeep) you'll be able to paint the siding pretty much whatever you want.

I love the roof. look how pretty w/a sage color siding and cedar accents

with the washed stone, it would look spectacular.

do a brighter white limewash and white siding if you like. still looks good

Change the door (no ovals) and paint the steps, window trims, and porch a creamy white. Get rid of the dark pathway around the house. Some simple landscaping. Then see how it feels. I agree to embrace the roof and stone.

How about one of the greener tones from the stone? An earlier post with cream tones didn’t quite work but this might work better.

White may just accentuate the orange color of the stone the copper of the roof. Will suggest that you pick the most mid-range color of your stone and use that for the color of your siding. That might help tone down the stone and make the house a bit more cohesive as well.

If considering doing a limestone coating down the road, think about your preferred long term color combination (including door, trim, front porch/stairs and roof) and how your siding color will work with the current and future stone.

A grey would be nice with your present stone and is a very adaptable color, if considering a stone update. I also don’t think you need to match the other house, but a soft grey would work well with their white (vs going too dark and/or earthy).

First of all - beautiful house, the copper roof and the rock are actually some of the nicest aspects . When someone says they want to "tone down" something, somehow I always get the impression they dont really like it... is that true? I would rephrase the goal as a change of siding color (if thats what you want) while maintaining a color scheme with all elements working beautifully together, in harmony. Right now you have that -your pallette is in the stone. And the fact that these are all natural materials, in the raw - stone, copper, wood - adds further cohesivness and is part of what makes it a beautiful house.

But no reason why you couldnt pull out a non-orange color from the stone, and still maintain cohesiveness. As Norwood and others have suggested - it should be a midtone and not white - perhaps post a close up ifyou want specific suggestions. A true white is going to be way too constrasty. Even if you were to pull out the lightest color in the stone, that's gonna be a light beige, not a true white, but would still read more or less as "white". For that same reason I would not do green for the siding or introduce any other extraneous color that doesnt fit within the stone color choices .... except perhaps if you were to use a contrasting color (ie green or blue which are opposite orange on the color wheel) purely for accent eg. doors, window trim, etc.

Here are three close ups of the rock mortar is pretty tan, maybe similar color for the siding? thanks so much for everyones input this one is really stumping me the only other issue is that my parents are building pretty close and are doing the copper roof to match with an all white siding and cedar accents dnt want to cbtrast too much, or do yall think it matters? heres their house location and garage/barn

I love this house.. I love the copper

I do think painting the siding will enhance the good parts of this house.

Go to your local paint store. Ben Moore or Sherwin Williams and grab a few samples of paint.

On my monitor these BM paints look lovely with the space. not a stark white as that will take away from the copper and stone but rather something to soften it all and work with what you have.

Thank you the inside of our house is navajo white and it goes well with the fireplace which is the same rock (but i think they were more selective and didnt use as manu of the orange pieces maybe this would work if not maybe a shade darker with this as a trim?

Maybe something close to the mortar color?

Agree with Beverly. Pick up one of the lighter colors from the stone to paint the wooden siding. Right now, there's too much contrast which emphasizes the orange in the stone. But leave the stone as is. It's actually quite pretty!

trying to find as many color combos as I can to match that stone.

if you choose a green, it has to be the right shade of green. you'd have to try samples to see how it looks in your lighting

darker and lighter colors would be nice. darker siding w/lighter trim. all of these look nice w/copper

    darker, contrasting colors

I kind of like these bottom 4. top two as one, or the bottom two. I'd get ssamples of both and see how they look w/the roof and ston.

You have a lot of different colors you can chose from, but here are just a few options. I tried to show it on the side where you have just siding, but due to the shadows of the porch the color didn't show very well.

Well…. We painted the rock and house. Some will hate the idea, but I just couldn’t get over the orange and yellow rocks. Here’s the update. We love it and it now matches my parents house that was just completed on our property. Thanks for everyone’s help. I’ll be posting in a sec for suggestions on the kitchen
