Need to boost curb appeal, what can I do?

Hi,

I just closed on my house and need help changing up the look. I would have preferred a red brick home but oh well. What can I do to spruce up the exterior?

I was thinking of maybe changing the door? But still would love to hear ideas from y’all!

Here is a nice color for your shutters and you can have your red in the front door.

Urbane Bronze for the shutters. Sherwin Williams:

You may need to move up the paint strip to a lighter shade if the dark color makes your roof look washed out.

Oh my gosh how did you do this? Great suggestion, the roof is original (2004) so we may get a new roof in a couple of years.

The Urbane Bronze shutters look really nice. I don't think the half glass door is appropriate for the front of your house. I would get one with just 1 row of windows. I don't care for red for the door. I would loosen up the landscaping, so it isn't so formal looking. Remove the tree on the right.

Agree with jck…one row of windows for the door. Three lites across like your example to mimic your windows.

It's a great-looking house. I might add more flowers to the gardens. I like the shutters and door, but you can paint them.

I do like the Urbane Bronze for the shutters but not the red door. I would also paint the front door in Urbane Bronze.

I don't like the red door either....too much red with the brick. I can't think of any other color so by process of elimination, either Natural Wood or Black.

Edit: Oops I just saw the UB door ^^ after I posted this.

These are just concepts. I use free Google Draw. All I can do is import screenshots of houses or decor, and then draw different colored lines and select shapes from the drop down menu. Paint companies have online Visualizers with a magic brush to 'paint' using their colors. Upload your photos.

PS congrats on your new house!

    Thats a beautiful home. Congratulations.

Everyone gave some super suggestions...Urban Bronze is gorgeous. So I will just add this idea.

Put larger pots with bigger flowers or shrubs by your front door.

    A few quick ideas.

That looks like a real nice tree by the door, but it’s hiding too much of your house. How about getting a professional arborist to do some trimming? I wouldn’t hack away at it myself. (Though sometimes I get carried away and I might completely remove the two of the lower branches, one on the right and one on the left, before I realized what I was doing.)

I also added new larger front door lights repeating the black.

Once you define your direction colorwise then pick shutter color. I used black and that works with the darker roof. The new generation of shingles have methods to control heat from the sun and hardiness from harsh climate conditions.

Please do t remove the tree, it just needs a trim, the branch over the front door. Beautiful home. Enjoy and congratulations!

Nikita, is that the actual landscaping or a mock-up of some sort? Some of it looks like a computer rendering to me, but it might just be my monitor.

(Or I need stronger glasses.) :D

If all real, do you know what kind of tree it is?

Lots of great ideas by everyone … congrats on your beautiful house.

Changing the door will make a huge difference. Flo gave you some great ideas, and she’s right about the roof color. I usually prefer gray shingles (dark ones for your house) because they “go” with more house colors. Deep gray shingles will give you a great contrast and not compete with any colors on the door and shutters.

As Boxerpal said, Urban Bronze is an amazing color - sort of gray, sort of brown and looks good with many house colors. If you can use an AI app, play with other deep colors - I would try some navy blues.

Landscaping is the jewelry of a house. Flowering bushes and perennials are my favorites. Azaleas are stunning in a variety of pinks and reds. Or knockout roses if they grow in your area. Plan your foundation bushes and perennials so you know what will come up each year. Then you can add annuals every spring.

You have a lovely house. Hard to mess it up when you start with this. 😍

@jilly I have no clue but all is real

Stunning house… The general word on landscaping is to wait a year and map out what you have. Then make changes. On the tree however, you could hire a professional arborist to do some of the cutting back anytime. They will know best where, and how to prune it.

In other words, as the seasons pass, take photographs, and make notes/sketches as to what is currently there. Then you can plan for for four season interest with a landscaper.

that green is horrible. and the white is too bright.

do the urbane bronze (or one of the other colors below) and a door like this:

when it's time for a roof, do a warmer charcoal color and not the red/brown

    this roof color is nice.

and if you want to forgo the shutters, you could try a similar look to this

Painting the shutters urbane bronze, adding bigger lights and updated looking house numbers will go a long way. Your house already looks nice!

    Nikita - any thoughts?

I have yet to figure out the paint switching app. But I love the idea of painting the shutters. I went up close to it and it looks almost plastic so not sure if it will hold up well with paint. For the door, I definitely like a door with more lites bc if the light it brings in. So we shall see.

Yes, a lot of shutters are made from something waterproof so they’re probably a vinyl. You can absolutely paint those.

Vinyl shutters? I’d take those down.

Nothing wrong with vinyl shutters… That’s usually what they are made out of. Wood requires a lot of maintenance and upkeep. And I think that style of house will look undressed without them.

My 1925 colonial had vinyl shutters. We spray painted them black when they needed a refresh and no one ever knew they weren’t wood.

    Practicality isn’t a vice.
