Do I need to worry about couch being centered across from TV?

The TV isn't mounted on the wall, so can't you move it down towards the fireplace along with the sofa?

Only about 12 in. I could try that. And I don't need to worry about the position of the TV on the wall that it's on?

There is an opening to another room to the left of the fireplace, which is hard to see in the photo. One of the wing chairs is partly blocking that opening. That's where the proposed TV location is, so I don't think that will work.

My guess is that the OP wants to store the toys that are currently in front of the fireplace.

It would be helpful to have measurements of the room, and the location of openings.

You might consider moving the TV over the fireplace. (Although this suggestion will ruffle some feathers.)

I would keep all your furniture where it already is, and put the storage unit against the wall behind the right side wing chair. At your proposed size of 36W, 22D, 30H, it will only slightly block light from the window. But since the wing chair is already blocking some of the light from that window, it will make little difference. I'd move the plant stand to the other side of the fireplace so it doesn't get knocked over when accessing the storage.

I also would like to update the staircase inexpensively and would appreciate ideas.
