Organic seed company decides to no longer charge $$ for its seeds

Just stumbled across this @ AP's site - thought some here might find it as interesting as I did :

Seeds are gifts from nature, a major organic producer says. It’s ending sales and giving them away

"Updated 1:23 PM EDT, August 14, 2024S

NAPLES, New York (AP) — A major organic seed company has surprised its supporters by announcing it will end sales and give hundreds of varieties away, declaring “we can no longer commodify our beloved kin, these seeds, or ourselves.”

The Cocozelle zucchini, now $14.25 per 100 seeds? No charge. Catnip, kale, the rampant mint? All free.

Petra Page-Mann and Matthew Goldfarb, the couple who run Fruition Seeds in upstate New York, said they’re letting go workers, stopping sales on Aug. 27 and relying on public goodwill — donations of money, talent and effort — to grow and distribute seeds on a $76,000 budget.

That’s a dramatic shift for a company with a budget of over $1 million in 2022 and a profile high enough that it’s among a handful of seed companies featured in the New York Botanical Garden’s shop.

“The call is simple enough: Seeds are gifts. Gifts are shared,” the couple said in a long and searching announcement weeks ago. They’ve thought about barriers to access and what they call the indignity of the dollar. Burnout, too, played a role. “We’re weaving a new fabric together, Friends.”..."

Their website doesn't say anything about this, and still gives prices for everything.

From the AP article - https://apnews.com/article/gardening-fruition-seeds-new-york-organic-3244acb8a2930c8981ff878af150cfde "Next year, instead of shipping seed packets, they plan to give away seeds by hosting events and visiting cities around the Northeast." So, to the extent they're going to go through with this, if you don't live in the northeast, it's a non-starter.

Fair point. I didn't see that. Though they sure hide it well. You'd think a major thing like that would be featured on their home page. But it's buried several clicks in. That's good to know that the AP article isn't spam. But as I said, it looks like the benefit is aimed at just a few.

Good grief, daninthedirt. What seeds would you be looking for? Maybe I can help you out.

What a wonderful thing to do. I hope that there will be some who maybe couldn't otherwise buy some of their seeds, receive some in the giveaway and grow bountiful gsrdens.

Good grief, mathias_lang, what makes you think I'm looking for ANY seeds? I can get those that I want. What we're talking about is whether these free seeds are available to anyone anywhere. This is a noble offer, and I wish them the best in their efforts, but this is one that appears not to be aimed at me.

As to AP spam, I tend to believe media when I see some unusual report in more than one place. You'd be surprised how many of such reports are based on faulty info. I'm still surprised that this company isn't announcing this more conspicuously. But let's try to stay on topic here.

Just reading the original post here and not going to the webpage or article, it kinda sounds like they just don't want to be run a business any more. Maybe they have enough money that can afford to give away seed on a shoestring budget as a "hobby" during their retirement or something. What about the workers who lost their jobs? They're going to have a lot more to worry about than being able to afford a couple packets of seeds....

Are they? That depends somewhat on their terms of separation, and the local job market, without more facts I don't think we know.

Of course we don't know. I was trying to make a point that I don't think the motive is as altruistic as they'd like us to believe.

I don't know that either, about whether this is altruistic, you may be right. Because of scammers., fraudsters, lying politicians, etc. people tend to look for self serving motives, and I understand that- once bitten twice shy. But I do think that there are some people who genuinely want to do something good and wholesome to help others. I hope some people will have beautiful gardens started by free seeds, and then maybe when those plants in turn produce seed, that they will share it with others.

If you read the full article, it supports the idea that these folks are not just doing this cynically out of self-interest alone.

Ok, I tried to read the article on the website but gave up -- it's so flowered up (pardon the pun) that I can't mentally digest it, WTH are they even saying? Cut to the chase people -- you don't want to sell seeds anymore? Fine. Just say so, no need for pages and pages of rambling on about it.

Which, BTW, makes me even more suspicious of their motive -- if you've gotta use that degree of flowery language you're working real hard to spin it... JMHO...

I didn't find the language overly flowery - tho I'm not quite sure what's meant by that in this case. It's not even a very long article - there are just a lot of breaks in the page - mainly links to other articles.

Carol -- I'm referring to the website page, not the AP article (which I didn't read):

Link: Fruition's End & New Beginning: The gift of embracing change together and trusting abundance shared - Fruition Seeds

"Do we have some spin doctors here?"

Uh, I think maybe this seed company is the one that hired a spin doctor...

I find it odd that people would comment on an article they have refused to read. Crazy is the word that comes to mind but to each their own.

I applaud their effort. Some humans are trying to evolve beyond the strictly capitalistic system and it has to start somewhere. Good for them for trying to effect change and bring forward a new earth. Ooops, I went all flowery. LOL

Did you miss the part of my post that stated I was commenting on what I read on the company website? Interpretation: I DIDN'T COMMENT ON THE AP ARTICLE.

ETA: I probably should have been clearer up-thread that I read the company website, not the AP article website. Well, I tried to read it, at least..

Not that I have anything against them, just seems like the seed selling/ sourcing/ packaging/shipping model doesn't work for them, so they want to try a more local focused concept and seem to be asking for donations. How they portray themselves as making a sacrifice to give back is rather over the top, but if they can make it work sure go ahead and try. The western New York /Lake Ontario area is a nice area.

They are stopping sales/shipping on August 27th. That leaves them time to finish up orders and have an office reset before the end of this fiscal quarter. They are already hosting work share and community event projects, so that might see more expansion. It could be interesting to see their transition over the next fiscal quarter and the next. A lot of seed sales happen during the winter, I don't know what the pop-up events are in the area.
