In praise of regular, ol’ wax begonias….

Just the kind you buy in the little 8-packs at Home Depot or garden centers. They require almost no care, just water a couple times a week. This window box is on the north side of my house and gets absolutley zero sunlight. Deer don’t bother them either. The caladiums are from the local farmer’s market, as is the creeping jenny. The ivy is from the fiery depths of hell. 🤪

Beautiful!!! Wow, just beautiful. Love the color combo!

Lovemycorgi I think you posted to my thread about petunias, so you know I'm right there with you on the begonias. I was just passing some of my pots yesterday and thinking, wow, those begonias look fab! They completely filled in the empty spots in the pots where the dead petunias were haha. I'm alreadylooking forward to trying them as edging. I have NEVER put begonias in the ground lol, but next year I am trying it!

Thanks, all!! I’m loving this combo as well and am keeping it in mind for more of my shade planters next year. I planted a lot of impatiens this year - which look great - but deer are a constant threat, and I’m just so tired of having to be vigilant with spray repellent.

Yep, Dee, that was me on your thread, also bemoaning how great petunias look at fast food restaurants (and gas stations, etc) yet not at our homes! They must thrive on neglect in those places, ugh. Well, I‘ve renewed my affection for these “basic” little begonias and will definitely be looking for more ways to use them next year.

That is a gorgeous combo! Especially how the pink of the begonias picks up the pink in the caladiums.

I have a long, rectangular planter that would be perfect a similar combo, but it's in full afternoon sun and the caladiums can't take it. Drat!

I like wax begonias but I don't...they're great annuals but my mom and sister always planted them and for some reason that's why I don't like them. But actually I do. LOL!

LOL mxk I agree completely! :)

I've posted these pots before, but here's a recent photo

(pay no attention to the broken fence lol). You can see the geraniums trying to peek out. The ageratum gave up I think, and is lurking somewhere underneath.

If these came in a pink just a tad softer, paler, instead of this .... I don't know what kind of pink it is lol - begonia pink??? - If they came in a softer pink they would defintely be one of my new favorite flowers. As it is, they have climbed the ladder to near the top in one or two seasons!

My grandma's begonias never looked this good haha!

^^ They do come in a softer pink, as well as white with pink picotee.

They DO??? I have never seen them in other than this bright pink and in white! I will have to keep an eye out, but I'm not hopeful. I would think if those were sold around here I would have seen them somewhere....

Thanks, mxk3!! I get your point; they’re such basic little annuals that it’s hard to get excited about them. But they tick so many boxes, allowing me to be somewhat lazy about their care. I don’t have to water them every day, they don’t require any direct sunlight, and the deer don’t bother them at all.

Kind of like the daisies that the previous owner of my house had planted everywhere, which I replaced with more ”beautiful” perennials when I first moved in. Well, now I’m planting daisies again, because the deer don’t eat them and I can basically ignore them and they still look pretty, unlike most of the other perennials in my garden.

Beautiful pots, Dee!! Amazing how they fill those containers…just lovely!

I’d be interested in other shades of pink also, although I do love this brighter pink that you can find everywhere . I also wish the red ones were more more red and less orangey, I’d be more apt to use them if that were the case.

Thanks, lovemycorgi! Not nearly as elegant or sophisticated as your window boxes, but as you say, they tick so many boxes. And lately for me, lol, that means anything that actually survives on my patio!

I would so love to have window boxes like yours. We got the house sided about 15 years ago and my husband just does not want to drill/cut/do anything to the siding. (no rain barrels connected to the downspouts either - the barrels are just sitting outside catching not nearly enough water lol!) I showed him your photo, hoping after all these years he might relent, but no. I pick my battles lol. I did once try this bag type thing - like a row of five or six pouches sewn together, with heavy duty ties at either top corner. You attached those ties INSIDE the house with big eye hooks, hung the ties over the window sill, and planted the pouches. It just didn't work. So I live vicariously through photos like yours!
