How to reduce height of 'Leonards' antique bed?

I have a fabulous king sized Leonards of New England bed that I love. However, as I've gotten older, it's harder to climb into with the 18" mattresses and 4" box bases we use. I'm talking to a furniture man I trust to find a way to lower the overall height.

I'm wondering if that center board can be turned horizontal, the metal straps removed in the middle, and we use thick plyboard across the entire bottom to support the mattress and lost the 4" base?

Thoughts? Ideas? I'm not getting rid of the bed, just looking for ideas to make it a bed I can age with.
