Did you or your friend sow any Helianthus seeds? It looks like it could be something in Asteraceae, like maybe a young sunflower with more rounded immature leaves. I can't see the leaf veins, which could help. Venation is important for IDs.

I grow helianthus heliopsis in my garden but I don't think these have much of a resemblence. I can check on which sunflowers if any my friend grows. Both of us have some asters.

I've been using the app 'PictureThis' which isn't free, but mostly worth it to me since it's more accurate than other apps I've tried.. it called this globe amaranth (Gomphrena globosa) which is an invasive and doesn't look like a match to me.

Loris, I don't think it's Gomphrena globosa. The texture of the leaves doesn't match, and the stem pubescence doesn't match. If I could see the leaf veins? They might show up better on the leaf underside. Are these plants definately from some seeds you collected? It looks so familiar but I can't place it.

Afaik Gomphrena isn't invasive. It may self seed but that doesn't mean it's invasive.

floral_uk, "PictureThis" listed Gomphrena globosa as invasive in the United States and 2 other countries.. I'll know to doublecheck that next time. It's listed as a plant to use on the Jersey Friendly Yards site which is aware of such things.

I'm often getting volunteers in my yard even from plants I don't already have here, so it can definitely be something other than what I winter-sowed.

I'll see if my friend has time to take a picture of the underside of the leaf and ask her about plants you mentioned in your previous post.

Gomphrena globosa is native to Panama, Guatemala, Mexico and southeastern Texas, but it's invasive in Cuba, Costa Rica and Hawaii(USA).
