Looks like a clematis to me. What do you say?

We have a clematis growing on our fence. All of a sudden it seemed that the clematis was doing great. Then we figured out it wasn't our clematis. It was a plant growing from our neighbor's property! Now it looks like a clematis to me. Is it? What is the name of this plant? It is growing like crazy!

For many years, C. terniflora was incorrectly referred to as C. paniculata. Paniculata is a tender evergreen spring blooming species and rarely, if ever, offered for sale in the US. The clematis pictured is C. terniflora, aka Sweet Autumn Clematis, with no doubt at all..

clematis paniculata? Had also wondered about c.flammula but leaves are different.

I was thinking that Clematis terniflora looks to be correct. But now that I have looked up Clematis paniculata, I am not sure!

I took a better and closer picture of the flower. I will have to go out and take a better picture of the leaves too.

Paniculata is spring blooming, so that rules it out! Thanks gardengal! I like the part "with no doubt at all."

Not only is it very strong growing but the seeds sprout very readily and it comes up all over the place. Even so I let some of mine bloom recently because it's pretty. I hope I've

cut it back in time to prevent any seeds.

Yep, no doubt at all as paniculata is evergreen, somewhat tender (so not able to grow reliably in a zone 6 climate) and with 6-7 sepals rather than the 4 common to SAC. Not to mention it flowers in spring.

Unfortunately, far too many online resources still mistakenly refer to SAC as paniculata so the confusion persists. I defy anyone other than a serious clematis collector in a mild winter climate to produce evidence that they are growing C. paniculata. It is very rare in this country and also in the UK.

I hope there won't be too many seeds sprouting erasmus_gw! I'm tired of continuously pulling out unwanted seedlings.

Laceyvail, it's not my clematis. It's my neighbor's vine. I will have to control it on my side---or remove it. Hope it's not a full-time job!

@newhostalady Z6 ON, Canada, I also share your CDN hardiness zone and I have experience with this wonderful fall blooming clematis and I can say confidently that you do not have to worry about this plant having seedlings that survive. (But this may not be the case in the future if our winters continue to be so mild).

Glad to hear that rouge 21!!!! I am sure my neighbor won't mind it covering our side of the fence too. I will have to ask her about it as I cannot see her side. I imagine it likes sun and my neighbor gets way more sun than I do. So the fact that it is growing for her, works for us!
