Pedestal Sink vs Cabinet for a small (and only) bathroom in 1/1

Remodeling my entire 5' x 8' bathroom because of an in-wall repipe. Bath has been demoed.

The non-tub/shower area is a 5 x 5 square.

1. Should I install a new pedestal sink or a vanity ? Are pedestal sinks pase ? I love the space it will provide next to the shower.

2. For storage, the cabinet in photo #2 (across from the toilet) was ok, but I want something nicer and to match the wood flooring (you can see it at the edge of #2 photo or below)

3. If a cabinet, any suggestions?

#1 OLD BATHROOM

#2, OLD showing ugly cabinet (yes, it should NOT be mirrored)

I live in NYC and have three very small bathrooms. The very best uses of space I have found are:

1. Vanity. A wall hung vanity with large drawers in it and a wide span between the edge of the sink top and the bowl so there is enough room to set down makeup, toothbrush and glasses. Decide on your vanity now because wall hung, and even some pedestals need to have blocking in the wall to support them.

2. Get a recessed medicine cabinet with a mirrored interior. They can hold a ton of stuff. Great use of space.

3. If you are a fan of open shelving, have shelves built in to the wall across from the toilet between the studs. It is a great way to get storage without hogging floor space.

4. Hooks instead of towel rods. Much to my great surprise my towels dry faster on a hook than on a rod and hooks take up less space.

So you are thinking of replacing that cabinet? You will need somewhere to stash cleaning supplies, personal care items, etc. If you have that covered, the pedestal is fine.

Will anyone do hair and makeup in that bathroom? Pedestal sinks don’t have much countertop for laying a blow dryer or hot iron or makeup kit down.

I'm not a fan of pedestal sinks because they have no storage and no counterspace, and bathrooms need both. The only place I'd put one is in a powder room.

This is the ONLY bathroom in a 1 bedroom/ 1 bathroom condo.

Cabinet it is, then. Is Wayfair a good resource for them?

Suggest looking for a vanity and cabinet that are complementary (change hardware if necessary). Go on line and research/compare.

Be sure that shower choices feel coordinated.

If having a hard time deciding on a direction (it’s a big and expensive commitment), search on line and you’ll probably notice that you are leaning towards a particular look and suggest not buying until you do.

Now, I'm uncertain. I just carefully measured the bath.

The wall with the vanity and toilet is only 60"
- 5" = shower to vanity
- 24" = vanity
- 5" = vanity to toilet
- 20" = toilet
- 5" = toilet to wall
Won't it be too crowded with only 5" from the shower curb to the edge of the vanity?

You can’t have too much counter space. Hooks are great, and some creative people put a shelf over the door.
