Powder Room Help!! Turning a medicine cabinet into glass shelving?

last year

Doing a partial powder room makeover that was not planned in advance! The walls will be painted cream and the plan was to paint the medicine cabinet door to match the walls. HOWEVER, i am thinking of loosing the door and replacing the shelves with glass shelves. Has anyone converted a medicine cabinet into glass shelving? Can you please shed some light on the process? What kind of framing? Would a towel bar be an option by the bottom shelf?

I am thinking the size of the cabinet needs to be reduced from the top to be a closer height to the mirror.

Bonus questions: I am not happy with the vanity light and I cannot seem to find a suitable light for the ornate mirror specially with that bow on top!! Any and all advice is greatly appreciated!

It is a pweder room and IMO drywall that wall and no need fo shelves or a medicine cabinets in a PRThe items you are putting together do not work That mirror is way to much for the space the light looks cheap and with a simple mirror it might be able to stay . Cut the baseboard away so the vanity sits up to the wall Simple mirro no frame and maybe a piece of art on the wall where you planned the useless shelves . If this is a real PR where guests use the space I have a wall mounted simple dispenser for disposible hand towels since it grosses me out to use a towel a bunch of people have used . A simple bath bar light could be nice in there too

The light has to be replaced, and placed over the center. I agree this is extremely cheap looking. The outlet has to be repositioned. These are all moving parts. The old vanity got damaged so this is the new one but has not been installed. The tile needed replacement due to damage so I’m waiting on that.

It is a powder room in terms of use but there is a shower in the bathroom that is never used!

I was thinking to drywall part of that cabinet and leave shelves where I can put my hand towels and extra soap.

The vanity will be moved to be flush with the wall. I was planning to bring the mirror down to sit on the backsplash. I love the mirror and having a hard time letting it go. I like to mix simple modern with ornate antique piece but I understand it’s too large for the space. I’m open to the idea specially that I’m struggling finding a light!

This was done in our guest bedroom en-suite where we occasionally host long term guests on a seasonal basis. We have had good feedback from our guests as it helps them stay organized and keeps clutter off of the vanity top. The little bars in front of each shelf stop items from being inadvertently pulled off. It’s your home, use it the way that best suits you not the way others think you should. If you love the vintage mirror but find it a challenge to use in this space it might look nice in an entryway.

Do you have another place in your house to use that mirror, since you seem to like it a lot. Its just not the right fit for that bathroom, in style and in size. A mirror with either no frame at all, or a nice narrow frame that isnt so ornamental, would look so much nicer.

You need to paint the shelves to match the walls. When you do that, you can paint the shelves the same color rather than replacing with glass. With that mirror --- which is quite lovely, but doesn't really match the rest of the bathroom --- you want to de-emphasize everything else.

That said, it looks like you need to repaint, as the vanity is smaller than what it replaced. You might consider a wallpaper with the fancy mirror.

Definitely need to repaint, planning on cream. I love wallpaper but the room is too small for any pattern. Even the wall opposite the shelves has a second door connecting to the den.

Just to give a better idea on the size! Again this was not planned in advance but rather a surprise.

I think the mirror can work if everything else is kept simple, with touches of gold to reference the mirror frame. I'd paint the interior of the medicine cabinet the same color as the walls. You could do glass shelves or the same material as your vanity countertop. Your shelves look nice and deep; they'd even be good for a person to set their whole makeup or toiletry bag when staying with you. Especially if more than one person is using that bathroom, the vanity doesn't offer a lot of storage space.

Alternatively, you could have fun in this room and go maximalist with wainscotting and wallpaper or a fun trim color and wallpaper, still keeping the mirror. If you're moving electrical anyway, is there space to scootch the vanity closer to the toilet a bit so you could fit a slim sconce on both sides of the mirror?

Let me take a moment to welcome the Maximalist to this thread 🤩!
I wish I could fit sconces on the side but unfortunately I can’t. There has to be a certain clearance between the toilet and the vanity and we barely hit that. I thought about recessed lights, or a sconce on the wall where the cabinet is, if I were to dry wall it. I definitely think the space can be functional but it’s disproportionate to the mirror. Thank you for all your input. Beautiful pictures and ideas.

It’s coming together slowly but surely! Waiting on hardware and wall plates and few other accessories.

I think it looks very nice, but, I really do like the mirror in the top picture much more than the one you have there now.
