What is going on with my cottonwood tree?

What is going on with my cottonwood tree? I didn't notice this cracked bark hole in the spring but just noticed it today and it is big! It has been a rainy MN summer. Wll this resolve itself? If not, what is going on and what do I need to do? Help!
