Decorate this awkward living room?

We have a formal living room that we have never been able to furnish properly. We are only looking to add furniture and new window treatments. We are open to painting but we recently reno’d kitchen so we dont want to do anything major here. We do not have a TV here, it’s just a space for holidays and hanging out by the wood stove (which is in the fireplace). I’ve never been able to figure out furniture arrangements bc the largest wall to put a couch on is not balanced w the fireplace. If you were furnishing this room how would you lay it out and with what? I’ve included a picture of part of the kitchen that leads into this room. The kitchen is kind of a classic white cabinets with black countertops. We have a navy blue dining room and brass/gold accents. My goal for the space is warm, cozy, inviting. I don’t know what “style” that is. I tried to give measurements and pictures of all walls but if you have suggestions on information I can add that would help please let me know. I would say our budget is probably tight for around here at 5K. I’d really appreciate some help.

Njmomma, i have had Ethan Allen furniture for 25 years. Actually the Bennett Collection.

I would recommend going with the mid range cushions. Not the cheapest but not the down.

I tried the down as it was super comfortable in the store. It was horrible. After months, they replaced it with the mid range one.

What I was most upset about is that the fabric I selected was not a good fit for the down. It looked horrible and felt like straw.

While the furniture is not exactly like it was 25 years ago, I'm still happy with it.

I am in the redoing my NY living room with the Bennett collection. We also have the coffe table and end tables from EA here and in Florida.

They offer high performance fabric which for me is a must.

There are always sales going on.I had a good sales rep in Florida do I did all my ordering through herfor my NY home. I can pass on her name.

She helped us mix and match wood tones for our Florida dining set.

There always a sale and lime I mentioned certain fabrics are offered at a lower price.

Chris, Thank you so much for getting back to me. It makes me happy to know that it helped. I understand about the wood-burning stove and the need of having someplace to stack the wood. We also have a wood-burning stove. Let me see if I can make some adjustments to the arrangement with the wood in mind. Yes, it would be nice if you could move the electric piano to the family room. As for the rug, the best way to know what will fit, would be to measure your couch in length and depth then pick up a rug that will fit underneath it as shown in the rendering. Sounds like a good idea to keep the couch you have since you have an old guy that likes to make his impression on the couch. There’s always time for a new one down the line.

This is ours. I agree the firewood and so forth isn’t very pretty but necessary. My husband keeps the logs loaded throughout the winter.

@Mae Day wow look at that fireplace 😱 🥰 so pretty. Is under the couch the only place you’d put a rug? Thanks again for all the tips! Now I just need to work through my decision paralysis. I think I’ll try to find a rug first… the tables seem easier for me to choose.

Can you give me a picture of your log rack? Just wondering how big it is

@Mae Day yes, here it is in alllllll it’s glory 🫣 my sweet DH made it so we had something that looked more like furniture a few years ago. It measures 63” long 18.5” front to back and 30” tall.

Wow, he does beautiful carpentry. Would it hurt his feelings to suggest something that is smaller but would hold more wood? That way you could have the extra seating in this room.

It holds a lot of wood. He’s be open to it, I’m sure. But I’m not sure where to find something to fit that bill. This one holds about two days’ worth of wood. Any suggestions??

  • PRO

Yes, we have one that works really well. It also holds two days worth of wood if we’re burning it 24 seven but lasts longer if we’re only burning it during the day. And it looks good in our corner. I’ll send some pictures.

We have the 40" rack from ace hardware. We have had it for about 15 years and it works really well. Here is the link for the ACE Hardware. Good price too.

Here are some pics with a log rack. The round rack and the one in these pictures are 40" wide, 41" high and 12" deep. It is not the round one but this is just to show you where I am suggesting you place it. If you put it on the left side you can keep your two nestled chairs and have the extra seating you are wanting. :-)

Also I would start with getting a rug. Perhaps 8x10. I'll post some suggestions. Preferably fireproof rugs. Hope this helps. Best Wishes.

I like that rug. It looks like 8x10 would be slightly larger than the couch. Is it better to be slightly larger or smaller? Here’s another rug I had looked at, which has very similar colors to the one you linked. I like the log rack over there. I don’t think my DH will go for it though as the door to the outside is on the other side and he’d see too many obstacles between the door and the log rack for when it’s time to fill it up. I don’t mind moving things around for fill up times but since he does the heavy lifting 🤣 I can always try and convince him though! If not, I wonder if kitty corner on the right of the fireplace might work and allow us to get at least one chair over there. Maybe something w an ottoman? I so appreciate your time 💜 I’m going to figure out the rug and curtains. Then the artwork. So it gives me time to decide on chairs or not.

    Rug

Well, that makes perfect sense. I understand how he feels about having to maneuver around furniture. To be honest, ours is on the far side as well. We just got used to it because putting it on the other side, even though it is closer to the door, it just fits the space better. We use a log bag to haul the wood from the outside to the log rack. I will draw it up with it on the right side just to see what it looks like. I will have to do that later today or tomorrow. glad you liked the rug. The one that you selected looks good too. Just hope it’s fire retardant. If it’s wool or says it specifically is fire retardant then that is good. A little larger than the couch is not a bad thing.

What a lovely room! FWIW I have found that velvet furniture is fairly cat proof. the tight weave of the fabric prevents their claws from gaining purchase. microfiber is similar and more budget friendly.

@Jenn-z9b-AZ thanks 😊 I hadn’t thought of velvet. I’m definitely not opposed! It’s good to know it can hold up to kitties.

@Mae Day I showed all of this to my DH and I’m excited to say my he is actually on board with moving the log holder to the left AND going with the ring one 😱 I was shocked! He doesn’t like the tables though (I love them!) so I have to look into what else will look good.

The style of end table. He’s fine w all other aspects of them

Wow, that is awesome! There are plenty of side tables to choose from out there. When you say he doesn’t like the style, tell me more about that. Would you/he prefer; mid century modern, modern, traditional, minimalistic, contemporary, etc. And, what type of material; metal, wood, with or without glass?

@Mae Day it sounds like he is fine with the coffee table but doesn’t like the style of the end tables. He said they look like TV trays to him 🤣 so I’m not sure that’s helpful but he is fine with the colors and materials etc… and that they are rectangular. I don’t know what style we lean. I love MCM but I’m not sure it would “fit” with our home. We have a traditional colonial and our kitchen has been described as “farmhouse” (to me it’s “classic”; white shaker cabinets with honed Jet Mist counters and brass knobs/handles). I like that the end tables here are not bulky. To me the couch is so heavy looking I feel end tables that don’t visually clutter that area are best. I personally like the ones you’ve suggested. As alternatives I think we are happy with wood and/or glass. Metal but only if it’s gold colored like these. Does that help?

Hello Chris, well you’ve answered the question really well. The next steps are up to you and your husband to decide what pieces work for you. I really wish you had an IKEA showroom near you. They have just about everything you need as long as you choose wisely you can pick up some great products. I am hoping you will be able to get the chairs in the near future because the holidays are coming up and you can use the seating at that time. IKEA has a large selection of chairs to choose from and so does world market pier one. World market pier one has really wonderful swivel chairs.

I would also like to suggest that you tape off the mirror and paint the frame a black color. That way it won’t conflict with anything else that you decide to put into the room. I wish you and yours the very best and hope that you will post pictures of the room once you completed it. Best wishes, MAE

I have a few follow up questions. For the window bench, is it better to have multiple smaller pillows for the lumbar support area or two long ones? I see I can buy 14”x36” pillows and the window bench is 75” long. Also, what color pillows would work best with the couch and on the window bench? Curtains will be white sheer. Im still figuring out the rug. Here are the tables we’ve come come up with and the potential rug (it’s black and white - I’m nervous about a light colored rug).

  • PRO

Hello Chris, looks great so far. Nice choice for the coffee table and side tables . If you’re concerned about the rug, then just go with something that’s gray or perhaps the blue one you posted earlier. As for the pillows on the window seat, I think the 14 x 36 would be a good choice. Color wise it would be good to choose material that matches your couch as closely as possible. Are you going to recover the window seat pad? As I recall, it is blue. So adding blue pillows around the room and on the couch would probably be a good choice. Hopefully you can match them with the navy blue on the bench seat. Since you are getting gold side tables and coffee table, I suggest you add gold throw pillows to the couch and window seat. The white shears sounds good and I’m sure they will look very nice. Hope this answered your questions. It was nice hearing from you. Let me know if there’s anything else I can ever help you with. Best wishes, MAE

@Mae Day thanks! The window bench is gray. It’s just a cover though as the actual cushion is pink (ha!) and we do plan to recover but not now. I’ll go for the longer lumbar pillows and try it out. Thanks!!

Well, with that information, you can go with just about any color with your throat, pillows, and accent pieces. I would still add gold in there since you have the gold coffee table and side tables.

Hi again all! I’m looking for advice on a type of black curtain rod for the window bench windows? My current rods I was going to use won’t work bc of the book cases on either side. What type of rod can I just lift up and out bc mine needs to be threaded in from the side. If that makes sense… I’m planning on hanging the curtains by the tabs and I’d like them to be able to be flush against the bookshelves when open. I hope this makes sense!

    Hello Chris, I found some curtain rods that should work for you. I am suggesting white instead of black because you are hanging white curtains and have white wall and window trim. But, I am sending pictures of both black and white with white curtains so you and decide which ones you like. Hope this helps. Best Wishes, MAE So here goes;

White curtain rods that should work.
