Too much to have dining room shelves the length of the table?

last year
last modified: last year

My dining room is 11’6” wide (along the window), 13’6” long, 8’6” high (102”) with a 6” old tray ceiling on top.

I have a 8’ table found at an oulet and am considering two cabinets that would be the same distance side by side at 48” x 91” high. Think this is too big for my space please?

I’m not sure they’d sit flush against each other…but it would leave 33” on either side of the wall open.

Do you really have that much china to display?

Not sure this is the best solution

The chandelier is too small for the room and the light bulbs used are too blue/white

The windows should have drapery panels IMO

I lowered the placement of your wall decor

I might consider a contrasting paint for the tray ceiling
The torchieres have to go. They provide terrible light quality. That's why you need a larger ceiing fixture.

The cabinets are too deep for the room. Not sure you will have enough room to pull out the chairs.

The room could use a rug.

Thanks Sabrina. 18” deep so 6” deeper than current 84” shelf…I added another pic with the table and cabinets behind it. I love the cabinets with the table but kind of agree…I wasn’t sure if too heavy for the space...but may help with lighter things in the cabinets?

Wow Beverly, thank you. Agree. Yes, I took treatments off for floor refinishing and just haven’t put them back on…do you have a light fixture to recommend? I don’t have that much China but could fill it with pottery, books, some of my kitchen items…gather things from homegoods…they’re a good deal at the outlet, so tempting.

Nothing is a good deal if it's not a good fit. Your mockup looks ok--better than your current room, but not ideal. Those tall shelves really loom. If you really want shelving pieces on that wall (and you have enough clearance for the chairs), mid-height bookcases or china hutch could be nice. Around 50" high.

Your table looks fairly narrow. I don't think you can really increase the diameter of your chandelier, so look for a nice transitional linear fixture.

Here is how to size the light for your room.

I would select a fixture with shades to soften the light.

Thank you. And agree…I love them and the price but needs to fit. The table is 3’3” so yes, narrow…

Probably not practical for the office bc need hidden storage….unless I did some treatment to the glass? Office is 13’9” deep /long x 11’6” wide x 9’ high so plenty of space for them…they also had solid door option of the same size 48” high x 91” high” x 18” deep that are just as beautiful. But, not sure how four panels would look on Teams calls for work…

IMO 2 tall cabinets filled with stuff will make that room feel even smaller so look for maybe even 2 48" wid buffet that match if you need the storage and a large piece of art above.Ideally the cabinets the same height as the wainscoting . No fake flowers and IMO no torchiers either but actual lamps on the biffet and a great new chandelier

    (48"w x 91"h x 18"d)
(11'6" wide on the back wall x 13'9" deep and 9' high)

Thanks again, Bev! I will reference your suggestions on the chandeliers multiple times for the dining room and my kitchen. How do you insert the cabinets into pictures? Do you think this would work for the storage behind my desk. I was thinking of two of them..and I'm getting rid of the sofa and boat pics and will put my curtains back up once I get some oil rubbed bronze rods...or black rods. They're pretty in person...or does it look like a wall locker.

    Thank you!

Question for you - you posted in a comment that you recently refinished your floors. Are they red oak? If yes, what brand/color stain did you use?

Do you need two of those solid door cabinets to store your files in your office?

Hi Dani, happy to help. Yes red oak. Duraseal spice brown and they water popped it…not sure what that means to be honest. But, I trusted them completely. Very blessed to have such a nice crew of gentlemen. Pretty dark color but I love the warmth. Let me know if you need anything else. Good luck! You’ll love the update no matter what you do!

Will you tell me the wood stain color you have on your floor in the first pic?
