3 years and I still can't decide

last year

Hi everyone,
I moved into this house 3 years ago, and I have not been able to figure out what to put on this wall space. I just need ideas. Most people have suggested a gallery wall of some sort on the right side of the windows (where the light fixtures is), but I need more hand holding than that. What size frames or canvas art? How many pieces? And then what should I put under the wall sconce? Please please help.

More than one person asked for additional pics in your June posting. Please post them here.

On June 1st you asked the same question and got 16 replies. Assuming you did not like any of them?

I was thinking that my previous post focused more on what to do about the windows. In this one I just want advice about what to hang up on the wall.

It's hard to draw any conclusions from one crummy photo, but I suspect there is a problem with your furnishings' layout. Those square windows are usually an indicator that seating is to be placed directly below them.

I took the bait with the reference to your last post & looked at it, all your pics & the many good suggestions. The only thing I can see you’ve changed is the direction the sconce is pointing. It used to point light up & now it’s down but I don’t think that has much impact. My thought about this post about what to do with wall space from windows to corner & the last post about what to do with the wall space around the windows is that they’re the same topic. I think the entire space needs to be treated as a single unit / project to prevent that entire wall from being cluttered up with more unrelated things. You said in prior post that windows cannot be altered from the outside due to historic home rules. Have you decided if you want to change the view seen through the windows? That’s important because decision will drive your treatment of that entire wall. IMO next decision is that sconce - is it useful in any way? I don’t think I saw another one on left side of left window, correct? The bare wall to right of the windows - my initial reaction is to hang one large & colorful picture. I’m guessing that’s the kitchen behind the dining area where the pic is taken from & a seating area / great room to left of dining table. So, a large piece of art that can be seen easily from those adjacent areas would have more impact than a bunch of small pieces hung gallery style that one would have to go to other side of table to look at. If however, you want to cover the windows & remove the sconce, then yes, a gallery arrangement might be interesting but a very large arrangement with 4 - 5 larger pieces covering the entire span of wall. So, back to making a decision about windows & sconce before deciding on art - how many, what size etc. etc.

I don’t think you really need art in that spot. But as you do want art there, you could try a wallpaper - maybe the removable type - on that entire wall.

The visualizer covered your hanging light which was not my intention. Your lights are art, too.

For heavens sake! Please Show the entire living space and not just this wall!

What's all the stuff on floor behind couch? Why is there a sconce between the two windows? It's too small and feels more like a bath sconce.

I agree we need to see the whole space . Can the table be turned since right now it is IMO causing issues for sure . I see you own the house why not look at a new window much bigger IMO also much better or is this a basement space ? The sconce makes no sense and I would never do wallppaper on a wall that is not IMO where it belongs. If you do not post pics of the whole sapce we have no clue as to what you are dealing with and no way for us to help. Please DO NOT START another post but all things related to this space now dealt with here in comments and that includes the pictures the answers all here .

Those windows are a total distraction. Do they give much light into the dining room? If not, I think I will suggest to remove them so that you have a large, clear wall space to do something with.

Can the table be turned so it‘s centered under light, as I think that‘s the bigger issue. It’s dependant on if you have room on the right? It will help with the wall problem as well, as a large piece of art centered over table is the best option. Definitely remove the sconce and suggest painting the window frames or adding custom outside mounted blinds, in the same color as wall, so they aren’t as prominent.

@ Jenny Faber if you want help you need to provide enough information for someone to really help you create a space that works. It looks like you are not using the space as designed. Table isn't centered under the light. We can't see how this works with the rest of the space.

How many people are sitting at this table on a normal day? There may be options that allow for reconfiguring when you have guests. Knowing how often you need additional seating would be helpful.

Pictures of the entire space would provide a lot of information that would help others help you.

A drawing of the space with measurements showing where windows and doorways are located would also help others help you.

I'm trying to figure out why the table is not centered under the light fixture. It looks like a buffet table is in the way.

Move the buffet table or sideboard to the window wall under the windows.

Move the table to the right so it is centered under the chandelier.

I think that will balance the room and you can have your art behind the chandelier.

To start, I would clean the vent and paint it the same color as the wall.

I'd probably replace the light fixture with something with fewer angles and more visual weight but I would have to see the rest of the room.

Nothing under the sconce. I'd get a consistent color and style of frame, but different sizes and shapes to match your pictures. Maybe start with some pictures you'd like to have on the wall and see what sizes and shapes they are. Then, use something like painter's tape to tape some paper cut to the right size to the wall to help you decide the arrangement.

Need to see a picture of the entire space. And, why is the light fixture not centered with the table?

Well ? It's now been "three years" and three days, so maybe the op decided , or decided the blank wall isn't a big deal.......: )

Either way, a vacuum of information gets the equivalent in suggestions.

Hmm. I think it's because I was the one that solved the dilemma. Good thing I chimed in.
