Small play/computer room with lots of windows and doors - help!

last year

Hi,

We have a small room that needs to be functional for the kids. So it needs a lot of storage for all their toys and craft things. It also has to grow with them in the sense a desk would be good for when they have latops in middle school. Currently they are 5,7,10 year old girls. It would be nice if they had a TV and games console in there too and could relax. I am open to bean bag chairs as I just cannot see the space for a sofa.

My dilemma is I have no design flair and cannot envisage how things will look.

I would love to get some ideas.

This is a small 155 year old log farmhouse.so I would like to keep the furniture in keeping. I am open to building some items myself.

Windows are low. 21" from the floor. They are 60" tall and then 21" to ceiling.

Thanks!!

    Hi Kelly,

It sounds like you’re creating a fantastic multipurpose room that will grow with your kids! Since the space is limited and the room is in a historic farmhouse, let’s focus on a blend of storage, functionality, and timeless style that suits the aesthetic of the house.

    1. Built-in storage: Low cabinets or bookshelves under the windows would maximize space without blocking light. You can custom-build simple units to match the farmhouse’s rustic charm, using natural wood or distressed finishes to keep with the character of the home. These can store toys, crafts, and eventually school supplies.
    2. Modular furniture: Opt for modular or multifunctional furniture like ottoman storage or convertible desks. These can serve as toy storage now but transform into desks for laptops as the girls grow older.
    3. Wall-mounted TV: A wall-mounted TV will free up floor space, and pairing it with slim, low-profile shelves underneath can house the games console without adding bulk. Keeping electronics minimal in the room will help it feel spacious and uncluttered.
    4. Bean bags & floor seating: Since you mentioned bean bags, these are perfect for a cozy, relaxed seating option that can be moved around easily. Choose options in neutral tones or fabrics that fit the farmhouse aesthetic but are also durable for daily use.
    5. Create zones: In a small room, defining "zones" can help make the space feel more organized. You could have a corner for relaxing (with the TV and bean bags), a built-in desk area under one of the windows for future use, and a section dedicated to toy storage or crafts.
    6. Rustic touch: Incorporate farmhouse elements by using materials like wrought iron hooks for hanging items or reclaimed wood shelves for added storage and décor that also complements the home’s historic vibe.

This setup gives you flexibility as the girls grow while keeping everything organized and functional.

I'll add a dense plush rug for the floor. And good lighting.
