Navy Grasscloth wallpaper from S&L for dining room - yes or no?

last year

Thinking about doing navy grasscloth wallpaper from Serena and Lily for dining room. I'm worried it may be too dark. We do have wainscotting about one third up the wall, and crown molding which will all be white. There is a decent sized bay window in the room. I like that it could be more moody/formal than the rest of our home, but I worry it will be TOO dark or look black. Any thoughts/advice? Thank you!

Thanks for your response -- The photos you posted are similar to what I have in mind. I will be doing floor length curtains (not sure exactly what color yet) and brass lantern style linear chandelier. Not sure yet on a rug, but definitely open to it. I envision a large brass/gold mirror on one wall as well over a buffet. I didn't think sharing the navy color online would help as the tones/shades are all different on screens compared to real life. That's why I listed the exact brand in case anyone had specific experience with that one. Thanks!

This weave is very fine and the color is not very dark in these images.

I like a grasscloth that has a texture that is more irregular in appearance.

I need to see your space period . I am not a real grasscloth lover it is a PITA to install and another to remove . Why not just paint the wall a navy anduse art for the accent and save the money . I also think if you do this then that wallpaper and drapes better match for sure at least the blues could get a bit tricky If you were my client I would choose paint . But I need to see the space .

It really depends on what you want - light and airy or colorful and dramatic.

If you have decided on grasscloth, but concerned about the navy’s effect, maybe get the same paint color and a lighter blue paint matching one of their lighter papers (buy quarts) and paint on different walls.

Other considerations come into play: furniture, flooring and natural/artifical lighting, plus your eventual rug and accessories. Look at inspiration rooms to get a better sense of the outcome and how they would also connect to adjoining spaces. It’s a big commitment in many ways, so be sure to think big picture.

Personally, I prefer a softer, more interesting shade.

Any reason you want to stay with Serena and Lily specifically? I think it would be a great idea to at least get a room mockup with your type of lighting and the paper you are considering. I’m a designer at Ethan Allen and when someone is choosing one of our wallpapers, especially print or grasscloth, we generally create a digital mock up so you can preview the effect. We can add different lighting, preview at different times of day; it helps visualize to see if the room feels too dark or not. I would highly recommend this if it’s a possibility for you

We had a grasscloth in our previous Dining Room but it had more of a shimmer, think taupe / not gold. We had a brass light fixture, dark table and chairs. The way the light bounced off the textured walls was beautiful. Just a thought to think of lighting and how that comes into play - you wouldnt want to have to have the lights on too bright to make up for a darker wall.

I need to see your space and I like the idea of painting first to see how you like it . I aslo am not a fan of S&L there are some really good wallpaper companies that specailize .

First, is this relevant? Not really

"I am not a real grasscloth lover it is a PITA to install and another to remove . Why not just paint the wall a navy anduse art for the accent and save the money ."

    Second......

There IS skill in installing grass cloth, but no more than any other, and no more difficult to remove.!

    Third.....

Show YOUR space..... and show what is adjacent o your dining area

No matter the color, grass cloth adds a dimension, a texture that paint alone can not mime. The texture will allow a move of art at will, you can't FIND a nail hole.: )

Grass cloth can be as formal, or IN formal as you choose. Serena and Lily does not make wallpaper, nor does Ethan Allen.

Great blues exist via Thibault, or Phillip Jeffries, and more.

Show YOUR space and the surroundings as well.

Navy would not be my choice and with your floors and what can be seen of your furniture, I think what I suggested earlier would work nicely.

You have to consider how the shade will resonate when accessorizing, including foyer so as to create a connection.
