Advice on exterior siding/trim paint of tan brick 1930s home

last modified: 8 months ago

This week I'm having the siding/trim re-done on my house and garage, and having the brick cleaned/repaired. Currently all of the trim, stucco, and siding are the same off-white/beige color (sample paint of SW Wickerwork and Red Barn can be seen in the first pic); porch is light blue; window trim is gray; and front door is red (lol please help). I have to decide on the paint color(s) this week and I have no idea what to do. I would love to hear any and all of your design suggestions and ideas because my brain doesn't do well at this kind of thing. Please let me know your thoughts! I really can't tell you how much I appreciate this forum and all of your brilliant creative minds. Thank you in advance!

*EDIT* to clarify that I'm seeking color design advice for the already painted areas (siding, trim, crawl space vents, porch, garage, front door, windows, etc.). I am not painting the brick. I would never do that.

I don't know all of the terms for the various parts of the house (eaves, gables, trim, siding, etc.), but essentially everything other than the brick and the roof will be refreshed/repaired/repainted. The brick is dirty and there are portions with algae growth, as well as areas where the brick has degraded, so it is being cleaned and repaired, but NOT painted.

Photo taken 11/12/24 of front of house

This stucco gables are identical on either side of the house

Siding on the backside of the house (obviously before it has been re-done)

What all of the windows look like

Showing close up to see brick color, storm door color, porch and front door

So you can see the color of the brick and the front door. All of the windows have the wooden blinds you can see here in the front door window.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT PAINT that pbrick What you need is a better color for the rest and a ton of fab landscaping . IMO you will instantly devalue that house if you do anything to that brick . I love this look and it would work well on your house . Then a good landscape designer to really make that home beautiful

Olive drab for all the trim assuming the windows are paintable. The stucco gables get painted a sandy beige.

The gray paint on the concrete porch in front, does not go with the house either. I would paint that the brown of the roof. I would use a creamy white for the gables and trim. No grays, at all on that house. Its a very attractive house with very nice color brick. You just need to have the right accent colors, and gray is not it.

Look at SW Urbane Bronze for your front door. It looks good with tan brick. I don't know whether your brick is too orange for it to work. You need to look at a sample next to the brick.

I'd go with a warm cream for the trim, particularly the windows. I'd paint the stairs a warm color, probably brown. I'd add some foundation plantings.

@Patricia Colwell Consulting I would never paint the brick - sorry for the confusion. I updated my post to clarify. So do you think that all of the trim/siding/everything but brick should be painted the same olive green color like you posted?

While you're at it, follow Dark Sky Principles and remove any lights that needlessly illuminate the house, trees, bushes, and anything other than the porch. Change the porch light so it shines downward to illuminate only the porch, not the yard. If you need to illuminate the path to the front door, put downward-facing path lights in the dirt between the house and the sidewalk, adjacent to the steps and/or in front of the raised sidewalk that leads to the door.

Let you and your neighbors see the stars!

I like that look I showed it keeps the exterior simple and cohesive looking and awesome with brick . The really dar can also work and give the house a totally different look I think the brick is very traditional color not tan at all on my monitor .

Patricia Colwell Consulting: "What you need is a better color for the rest..."

I've always thought that sage green paint looked great with the brick.

I agree with the other commenters that said olive. I would make the windows and the stucco a golden cream color. Are the window sashes themselves paintable or only the trim? The windows look like they might be vinyl with grids between glass, which would limit your options, but that might just be a trick of the lighting in the picture.

If the windows have to stay white, I'd still go with green, in the trim and vents, but with a bluer undertone than olive, like forest green or teal. in that case, I'd paint the stucco either a white/light grey or a lighter version of the trim. Here are a couple mock-ups:

*Let me know if you want to see any particular colors and good luck with your project!

** I'm updating the post a smidge and adding a few more pics for color reference purposes.

@littlebug Zone 5 Missouri the roof is a red/brown and I agree that the gray doesn't belong, but @thethistle just pointed out that the windows are vinyl and will have to remain white : ( The gray around the windows will be changed, but now I'm realizing I have to stick with something that doesn't make the vinyl windows stick out like a sore thumb. If I did the creamy white colors you suggested, what color would you do the porch and the front door?

@cat_ky the porch is a blue-gray, but I agree with you that it needs to change. If I stayed with a lighter trim and siding, what color would you suggest for the porch and front door?

@kandrewspa I like the idea of the deep dark color front door. What color would you paint the porch?

@Patricia Colwell Consulting I'm adding a few more pictures so you may be able to see better. The brick is yellow/tan brick. I've run into a hiccup because I realized that the windows are vinyl, so the trim around them can be painted, but the windows themselves will have to remain white. Same thing with the front door storm door, which is beige (I'm happy to pick up a new storm door, if anyone thinks I should get a white one to match the windows).

@thethistle woah you are a dream. This is exactly what I've been trying to figure out how to do on Canva! How did you do the mock-up?! Teach me your ways. But really, you're so thoughtful thank you. If you've read everything up to this point of my comment then you know that you made me realize that yes, the windows are vinyl with grids between the glass and thus can't be painted, and same thing with the front door storm door. I know that almost everyone has agreed that a sage would be beautiful, but for some reason I feel like it makes it look more dated. I'm wondering how brown tones might look. What do you think?

The white windows are driving the bus (wish they were black). So, go with a dark trim around them (I'd go with the blue of the front steps). Paint the stucco white.

"the windows are vinyl with grids between the glass and thus can't be painted"

Based on the photos, I don't think white vinyl windows are a problem. I prefer the white stucco above the driveway.

Another vote for a sage green with your nice brick.

I use Gimp, which is basically a free open source version of photoshop. I make a lot of layers (:

I feel like brown can go dated really easily, and not original-period-house dated, but redone in 1985 kind of dated. I personally wouldn't go with a basic dark brown, but everyone's got different tastes and I can see it reading as a classic timbered Tudor.

But - I played around a lot with brown tones and playing up the caramel tones on your house and going somewhat monochromatic can look nice. I made the stairs white so the windows aren't all alone.

    All white window variation:

I think we're all going green because it compliments the brick so well. It also pulls more towards craftsman style than Tudor and craftsman is pretty popular right now. I did a couple more with green just to see different combinations.

Keeping the light trim and going key lime on the adobe and stairs looks more modern-cottage and keeps things light.

Taking a note from elcieg, Navy blue/blue-black would give you a crisp, more modern look if you're wanting to go that direction. A touch of blue contrasts the orange in the bricks nicely too:

The roof is more of a reddish purple brick color. I think Champagne will work for trim to bridge the purpleish roof and orange brick. Then the door could be Chocolate brown. The siding would be Cream.

    Yes, @thethistle

I thought those were two different houses with the two different roof colors. The first few photos are a completely different color roof. My bad.

Guys I'm so sorry for procrastinating responding. I have anxiety and it shows up most in responding to messages and emails. I still haven't settled on a color. I had a facetime meeting with a sherwin-williams advisor, and my mom met with a sherwin-williams advisor at my house while I was at work one day. Both gave differing opinions. My advisor suggested these colors (with the left side being gables/stucco and right side being trim)

The advisor my mom met with said the following in a text message to her afterwards (I'm still not sure how to translate it and I am going to have to call her if I can't figure it out on my own):

    Body: caramelized 9186

    Trim: urbane bronze 7048

    Windows: vinyl safe formula

    Prime the new wood

On the porch use polyuria caulking for cracks. sprinkle on top with shark grip while still wet

Paint on porch: H&C color top (water based)

    Caulking around front door: powerhouse

    Latitude

I also asked chatgbt, and it suggested the below options:

Previous iterations with chat gbt said the following:

And I was just looking at the historic colors and thought that maybe "Renwick Rose Beige"/"Colonial Revival Tan" or "Rockwood Antique Gold"/"Colonial Revival Tan" might look nice.

Also, I'm sorry that one photo is brightened and makes the roof look brighter than it is - I truly didn't realize it till I took more pictures of my own. That photo was taken and used by the realtor when I had it on the market for a minute a few years ago.

I'm sorry I'm so indecisive and I really, really appreciate the time you all (and especially @thethistle) have spent helping me.

Any thoughts on what the SW advisors and chatgbt have said? I have to pick tomorrow (Monday) because the last day to paint around here looks like it's oging to be Wednesday.

Listen to the pros here and the SW color advisor. At this stage you should have sample sheets of each color to look at against your home. Chatgbt looks like a rabbit hole.

No grays, or blacks. They just do not go with your roof. Yes, I agree, listen to the advise you are getting here. Not agreeing with some of those places, you have gotten ideas. when you do pick a color, make sure it is a nice clear color, not a color that has a dirty look like the color you have now.

No worries about getting back, it happens, I was gonna say there's no rush lol.

Okay, so you DO have a purple roof.

At this point maybe monochromatic with the color scheme and go for the Caramel trim and Cream siding and those two colors would look good on the garage, too.

Accents in your roof color in glazed pots and flower colors. Oh, the front door could be the roof color, it looks like it may be already but a deeper shade would be nice.

Please let us know what you decide, a lot of great options, this is a great house, I would love an after photo : )

Today is Monday decision day? Yikes. I'm sorry your anxiety must be on hyperdrive today because you haven't logged into Houzz today either. I suppose you've made your decision. Good luck to you and I'm sure it will turn out great.

I’m here! I’m kind of feeling like I might as well do what the SW advisor who came to the house said. I figured I would share two more pictures of the house (taken 5 minutes ago, no edits) if anyone had any final advice!

I wouldn’t put my roof in the purple category but I guess that’s not wrong 🤷🏼‍♀️ I think it’s the shade

Yes, no worries at all. This is a stressful enough process. I'm in the process of getting my house painted (original ~200 year old siding uncovered and restored) and I needed to not look at my own house for a while haha.

I happen to have a SW swatch of Willow Tree and it's much more saturated than the square you posted is showing on my monitor. Like @jackowskib said, I hope you have some large swatches or paint samples at your house. I picked up a green swatch of ruskin room green in the store and was confused to see a golden Khaki when I got home. It's green in low and northern light, but golden in a southern exposure, point being - your color may look quite different depending on the lighting around your house.

This is the Sherwin Williams advisor's suggested colors that you posted swatches for:

One things you'll need to decide, regardless of the actual colour scheme:

Do you like the look of two toned windows? I noticed the note form your colour advisor about vinyl safe paint, so I'm assuming they're thinking of painting the windows non-white. You have grids-between-glass though, so those will still be white. you can have:

    1. All white windows, trim, and grids
    2. painted trim and white windows + grids
    3. painted trim and painted windows with white grids

Renwick Rose Beige might turn out something like this:

Thanks for your response. Are you leaning in any direction, any colors you like so far?

You know you can use SW Visualizer ColorSnap online, upload photos of your house and paint it using their paint colors.

I think the bright red door should be changed. Whatever color you decide for the trim might work best for the door.

You seem to really like the golden neutrals for a more monochromatic scheme, or at least you've mostly asked about neutrals. If that's the case, I think you should follow your gut. Which scheme would you go with? The urbane bronze or willow tree?
