Need to consider the visual with the trim size that will be used, but 36-42 inches can be considered. Perhaps use painters' tape and do a layout on a wall to get a better perspective on how it will appear before making your decision. We have 9 ft ceiling, and the chair rail top sits at 39 inches from the floor, it's more dainty trim not the traditional big stuff, lol.

I hope you are not just doing it in just the DR IMO adding this trim to only one room is not ideal and it is so important to also think about the style of the furniture and the other pieces that might hide the trim.

I was planning on adding wainscoting also to my powder room. Please tell me why just adding to one room is not ideal?

I think they work best when done according to the whole house decor and I like that trim for sure in all the spaces seen together . Might just be me but not keen on just adding trim willy nilly . Do you have very traditional decor ? I have used a certain style of this in even a contemporary space but it was in the enty up the stairs and in the DR the LR had windows on 3 walls so no trim there .It was a bit different than the traditional wainscot.

I will have the same baseboards throughout the house. I have a transitional home; trying to make dining room more interesting.

I think it is your home and when all is said you do what you love in your space .I think making a room interesting IMO is best done with art and a fab chandelier and a great table and chairs . Never felt the wall trim I do like larger basebords and again crown if everywhere too.

Can you post a picture of your actual dining room? Wainscotting can be different heights depending on the style you would like for the room.
