Quitting the Quoins: how to modernize an exterior?

last year

Looking for advice on how to modernize the exterior of my home. It has (a LOT of) quoins, and we would like to downplay or remove them to create a more current look. Should they be painted the same color as the stucco to have them blend in, or is shaving them down a better option (although likely more $$).

Are there other design ideas or techniques that we should consider for a modern update? I would love to hear any suggestions or see inspiration pics.

paint everything the same color, even the garage doors. Too much contrast highlights.

Paint EVERYTHING the same color. Remove the #'s from the windows if possible. More streamlined lighting. New, less traditional looking door. Landscaping that is less fussy looking. You won't turn your home into anything modern, but taking these steps will refresh it and make it look much more streamlined.

The quoins are probably EIFs. High-quality styrofoam. My bet is they are essentially glued on. You will have to refinish underneath them if you pry them off.

I'd consider reversing the colors and paint the stucco the same white as the quoins. Depending on your taste, you could go with more contrast on the trim, something like Urbane Bronze or a warm charcoal or alternatively, a pale color. Refreshing the landscape will definitely help update the front - large trees/shrubs should never block windows and the ball shrubs look dated in the current setting. Wood garage doors can add some warmth, a more modern style of light fixtures and maybe a new front door can all update the exterior.

Your roof has a yellow or gold tone and the stucco is kind of a pinkish beige. Consider painting the house a different color, like more of a tan or khaki with no pink undertone to go with the roof.

The subject of quoins has come up before. The conclusion was that they are typically not removable.

You can add trim over them, but they are often foam with stucco overtop and cutting them off leaves the structure open to water penetration.

Painting them the same color as the walls will minimize their appearance.

Your home color seems to be at odds with the roof color. I would consider a color that is less pink and warmer tones to work with the roof. I'd also paint the garage doors to match the entrance since they take up half the front of the house.

I'd also consider completely 86ing any white trim and come up with a totally new color scheme that gives your home more presence. It's a large house but the colors used don't make it look important.

I think I might try to change the details to embrace an English Carriage House style.

    Change the garage doors.

Create some type of detail over the garage doors to lessen the flat appearance of the house.

Create a vintage appearance to the house.

Modernize is not the way to go with this house.

Thanks for the render Beverly but my Khaki green does not work for me after all. I like your second photo, the tan.

They're usually just additional foam and could be cut down. You'd have to have it patched by a good EIFS contractor, then recoat the house to match the color. Maybe just the garage ones?

Beautiful house, good suggestions above about painting new colors. Redoing the foundation plantings would be an effective update. Shrubs that obscure the windows need to be moved or pruned back at the right time of year for your area.

Good advice already — if it were me I would replace the door and the window just above it (not the large one) with something simpler and more clean lined - I would also update the exterior lighting again with something less ornate (you could also go larger)

totally agree on the landscaping - something looser/more interesting would go a long way in updating the look of the house

You're not removing the quoins without re-stuccoing.
