Is anyone doing the Quiltville mystery this year?

Bonnie is starting her annual mystery quilt next Friday (11/22), a week earlier than usual due to her travel schedule. I save the steps every year, but haven’t made one in quite a while. This year I’m going to do it, since now I’m retired and I have time. 😁

I’ve made ten of Bonnie’s free scrap quilt patterns, but I’ve never made one of the mystery quilts. One of my favorite parts of the quilting process is choosing the colors/fabrics to use. The mystery quilt concept does that for you to a certain extent. I also don’t want to devote that much time to a pattern I may not like. I did print out her 2016 En Provence pattern after the reveal, but I never did make it. Maybe someday. Please keep us posted on your progress.

I'm not sure would do well not knowing what the outcome will be. I SHOULD try it if only to force me outside of my comfort zone. Maybe I'll check it out! Please keep us posted on your progress.

I’m done with this week’s segment. A bunch of sets of four flying geese. She calls for aqua/turquoise, but I don’t have a lot of that so I did some aqua and some blue (I have LOTS of blue!)

Here are a couple of my sets.

Very nice fabrics! I went to the website the other day but only gt yardages/colors. I couldn't find cutting/piecing instructions. Does she only post each section for a couple days?

She posts them on Fridays. She posted the introduction around Halloween and the first part of the pattern last Friday. There is an Old Town tab at the top of her blog with all the mystery quilt posts. She will leave it up for a while after the quilt is revealed.

Donna, thanks so much! I missed the "part one" link before, but found it when I went back through. I haven't decided if I am doing it yet, but I like to have the option. Appreciate you bringing it up in your post! Your geese look great, btw!

Part 2 is a zillion red and neutral 4 patches. I still have about 60 to go.

Part 3 is red and neutral hourglasses. I think I’ll take a break from 4 patches to do them.

Donna, Ive dowloaded the pdfs of the intro through part 3, but we've had some issues with the outflow hoses on the forward head 🤢🤮

So I've been preoccupied. I really want to do the mystery quilt though, but I'll be way behind you!

Char, I hope you get the head issues fixed soon!

My hourglasses are done. Back to 4 patches.

I really like your fabrics, Donna! Head is in trial basis, only for liquids right now 🙄

I think today I'm going to go thru my fabrics to pick out those for Bonnie's project

This week’s part is a bunch of sets of HSTs. There are the same number as the sets of flying geese, so I am guessing they will go together. Here are a few of mine.

Pretty fabrics, Donna. Nope, I still haven't started, lol. I'm betting I'll see your's done before I do. 🤭

Still plugging along with this quilt. It’s a lot of units! Bonnie released part 8 yesterday (or Monday, I can’t remember) so she must be getting close to the reveal. So far it’s a lot of red, melon and neutral and not a lot of aqua.

Donna, you are a trooper! Looking forward to seeing the fruit of your labors.

Isn't Bonnie Hunter known for lots of piecing/units?

I think there was something about the reveal on the website when I downloaded the last part. I'm Interested to see what it looks like!

My first three blocks (of 25) are done!

Wow, Donna, 69 pieces in each block! You’ve done a great job. Lots of seams in each one. Lots of ways to go astray. They look perfect.

Those look lovely, Donna. Bonnie’s mystery quilts always scare me because of the number and size of pieces.

Thanks, ladies! Lois, Bonnie gives very detailed instructions for pressing. If you do it her way, things go together very easily.

    Very nice!

Wow! Donna your blocks are just beautiful! I just looked at the reveal and the quilt is really gorgeous! Maybe sometime in the future I will start making some units. Can't wait to see yours finished!

I don’t need a full size quilt, so I’m making two lap size ones. I just finished the first top. I used Bonnie’s design except for the turquiose inner border. She called for a neutral border, but I wanted more blue.

I have 13 more blocks to assemble, then I’ll figure out sashing and borders from the pieces I have left over.

(I wish I had a use for the approximately 7 miles of loose threads I’ve picked off of it!)

    Donna

Donna! That is stunning!!! And I'm crazy about your borders, too!

    Very well done indeed!

    Donna, you inspired me!

I started! But I settled on blue, purple, gold & white/cream for my colors, mostly because my stash on board dictated, lol.

    Part One done!

Very nice, Char! My second top has blue, too. Mostly because I don’t have a lot of aqua and I have gobs of blue. 😁

I’m looking out my window at the dusting of snow that fell this morning! I am in north central Florida.

Donna, same with me, lotsa blue, very little aqua. Idk why I have so much purple, though, but I guess most of them are less than 1/4 yard. Perfect for this project! Do you have a picture of your blue one?

Snow in Florida! What's happening with this global warming?

Just finished the 244 4-patch units! It was a bit of a grind I have to admit. On to hourglass units, lol!

Char, I like your purples! I finally finished my blue blocks yesterday. Now I have to cut and sew a lot of sashing pieces. I may put it away for a while…I think I need a break.

I admire all of your "stick-to-it" ability. All those little bitty pieces would drive me to quit after the first week. I suppose I must have ADD.

    Donna, that's a great quilt.

Got my parts 3 & 4 done now! I actually screwed up & made twice as many hour glass units than I really needed, but I will keep them for something else.

I have been noticing that doing one part at a time seems alot less tedious to me than I expected! Not picturing the whole quilt, or even the whole block, seems to make this project less intimidating.

Thank you, Donna, for bringing the mystery quilt yo my attention! Your postings made me step out of my comfort zone and try something new, and I am very appreciative 😊

Bkay, I felt EXACTLY the way you do about all the tiny pieces, but I think this approach of making units takes alot of that intimidation factor down several notches. I'm glad I tried it!

Great job, Char! I love the yellow hsts! I need to use more yellow in my quilts.

I finished the second top today. Both are around 48 x 62. I had one block left over and have a wall hanging planned using it, but I am going to put this all away for a while and do something else. I’m really over red and white squares for now!

LAST Old Town top is complete! I had one block and four sashing pieces left over, so they went into this wall hanging. It’s 31” square.

Now I have a lot of quilting to do!
