Curb Appeal Needed! Shutters & Plantings?

last year

The house is a blank slate in front. I would love ideas from you to give it curb appeal! The neighbors have shutters and the color they add is nice. We definitely will need plants! Any suggestions are very much appreciated. Hardiness Zone is 9A. Soil has a lot of sand being 20 minutes from the beach. I'll admit I am not great with plants that have to be tended to a lot so they should be hardy ones. House faces East. Move-in is mid to late December so I may have to wait until spring to give plants the best chance, but I am very excited to hear your suggestions to give this home curb appeal! Thank you!

@elcieg Thank you for your reply! There are white gutters just about everywhere. Where could I paint trim a lighter shade of the roof color (grey)? I do not want to get new gutters. That is not in the budget. The front door is just white now with some glass. If you look for it in the first picture you can see it. It has 1 white sidelight too. I agree it needs a color with so much beige in the brick. I love the SW Naval color, but it is a navy blue, not a bright color. (I painted a friend's front door the SW Naval color.) What bright color would you suggest?

I think your house is fine as is. Hire a landscaper who can design an appropriate plan for your climate and ease of maintenance.

Any landscaping lovers have a suggestion for plantings/beds in front for curb appeal?

Alocal professional landscaper will be your best option. We used one for our home and are very happy with the results. They know the climate, the soil, and design principles.

You certainly can paint your white gutters. It will make a world of difference if you paint them the color of the brick.

It looks as if the brick needs washing--not power washing, but enough to remove whatever is discoloring it.

The home requires a landscaping plan.

You might want to consider shutters & upgrades to your garage door.

Definitely consult with a local landscaping company. They will know what thrives in your Zone and what needs more or less maintenance.

A deep colored door is always pretty with your brick. Black, chocolate brown, deep taupe or mahogany red would all complement the brick. Just keep in mind the size of the garage door if you are painting that too since it’s the first thing everyone sees driving up.

A blue (not necessarily navy) might work but you would need to get Samplize to get a better sense of which shade.

The first year or two after you plant anything, you'll need to water often. Even very hardy plants need water to get settled in.

Fall is for planting, don't wait till spring. Planting in the fall/winter gives time for the little roots to grow and take hold. The other advantage to doing it now is that landscape firms tend to be less busy in January so you can hopefully get someone out to do the work in a timely manner.
