Advice of furniture for family room

last year

We are looking to replace our existing family room furniture and need to accommodate up to six people. It’s usually just hubby and me but our kids and their spouses come for visits and we all like to watch movies. I want the room to feel balanced. Am looking for suggestions on couch, chairs and/or loveseat. I do want to keep the rug as I just purchased it 😬. Am working with a designer but was not thrilled with what they proposed. Any suggestions/visuals (?) would be so appreciated 🙏🏼

Looks .like a lovely cosy space; rug is great. I recommend removing the console against the wall; possibly relocating to the entry area? This way you can have a big chair or even 1.5 seater there. The sofa size seems good for the space but I feel the back should be a little lower as its separating the spaces. Also, when looking for a sofa to go in the middle of a room, choose one where the fabric cavers the join where the arms are bolted on. I aso think the coffee table is too big and bulky. If you switched to a round coffee table you might even fit a foot stool with the the new chair against the wall. The smaller chairs near the window work well.

I so appreciate the first two comments regarding the TV - unfortunately, it has to stay where it is. I have to choose my battles with my hubby and this was a no go. Just sharing for future comments.

These are your two options. Sizes of items will be critical.

IMO the sectional is the better choice to accommodate 6 people. It also allows you to recline easier for TV viewing.

    Thank you Beverly

I'd go with Beverly's design on the right. However, I'd get two medium sized sofas instead of a love seat. Love seats are never comfortable for two people. I find it actually looks less crowded than a sectional and you get to have a drink and lamp table in the corner.

Because seating for six is a lot to add in this space, I'd pay attention to the lines and scale of the furniture. Avoid overstuffed, large rounded arms. I'd opt for tightback, lower, more narrow armed sofas. For the two chairs, I'd consider open arms like you have now. Perhaps lower arms.

You current colors are very pleasing with the rug.

The room cannot accommodate two sofas at right angles to one another.

I agree with Kendrah. I would have thought that if a sectional can fit then 2 sofas at right angles will fit. Access is not needed between them. I think that with smaller spaces, you get more seating with separate sofas rather than a sectional. The furniture item against the wall only needs to be a wide chair or small 2 seater to balance out the look.

In a previous project we made the same style sofa but had one less shallow and with only scatter cushions (no back cushions) so that the seat depth was the same but the overall depth was less.

Two sofas or one love seat. Get a club chair that swivels!

What are the measurements of this room?

Kendrah - I can measurements in the morning. Not home at the moment

My room measures approx 9’ on the wall with the side table 12’ on the wall with the two chairs and 12.5’ where the sofa is currently

Longer sofa and three swivel armchairs, two of them facing windows to create wider visual space and one facing the other two. Swivels are adaptable to both conversation and watching TV. Remove the little console table on the wall to accommodate. Pick a light to medium color for the three swivels.

I'd get the same sofa in two different sizes - this comes in an 85" to go across the back, and a 75" that could go along the side where the chairs are currently located.

If you like the current chairs and they are comfortable for TV viewing then keep them and place them across from where they are currently located. Now you have seating on all three sides.

Your room is really beautiful, your colors, and most of your furniture work really well. I wouldn't look to reinvent the wheel, just add more seating that has nice trim lines so the room doesn't feel over crowded.
