Can anyone tell me about my fireplace?

This tribe has been amazing helping with our “new” old home. Can anyone tell us about our fireplace? House was built in 1910 but this doesn’t look like the style from the period? Current owner had a gas insert installed so it’s a true heat source. Thoughts on the stone? TIA…..

My guess is it's not original to the house, but it looks fine to me.

I noticed along the stairs you have wood paneling with a decorative se-through piece and a bench that look added on to the house. I wonder if this stone fireplace was added at the same time as the whole set up near the stairs. I presume it was added in the 70s-80s. It does not seem original to the house.

A fireplace isn't usually something that's just kinda added to a house. More like a stairway, you've got to plan for it. Woodstove maybe.

I know the fireplace is original. I’m curious about the lodge style stone facade

I love your fireplace. Not an expert, but your location might give a clue; in 1910 it seems likely local stone/ river rock might have been used.

This very much could be original to a house with other craftsman details in 1910 house

You’ve asked for thoughts on the stone & said you know the FP is original to house. Are you not liking the stone or on the fence about it? I love it & especially love that it’s a great complement to the ceiling beams & so different than the modern marble & tile FP in modern homes. I think your plan is for soft green walls in this room - the stone will really look different with that color & in a good way. I hope you show us when you get that done.

Just curious - once we close on the house, I'll try to find some historical records - may not be much to find in our area. Just trying to learn what we can. We do like the FP - were just curious if those stones were original...

Maybe when you move in you’ll find original info hidden somewhere in this house since it appears current owners have respected its style if they’re the ones who updated it. My parents bought their circa 1948 retirement home from the original owners. While moving in, they found blue prints and original light fixtures stashed in one of the many storage cupboards in the basement. Some of the neighbors were also a great source of info about that house’s history too.

Again, I’m no expert but I do own a 1914 Craftsman bungalow in the Bay Area in an area with many Craftsman homes, and to me it looks original. Where is the house in question? What are the fireplaces like in neighboring houses of a similar vintage? Ask your realtor, perhaps.

I think your fireplace is gorgeous. If it were mine, I would not change a thing.
