Navy / Grey exterior paint - have to decide today!

Hi people! We have a boxy brown shingled 1962 house on a hill and replaced all of the moldy old shingles allowing water to seep into our walls with Hardie plank.

Now we have to paint! We are leaning toward Benjamin Moore Westcott Navy, a dark grey-blue navy color that looks pretty blue in the sun but pretty dark in the shade. The house is big and I don't want it to pop off the hillside too much, and it's also among and under trees so a light color will get dirty. The color consultant at Benjamin Moore strongly suggested this color, and we all like it, but I'm nervous about going with such a dark color!

Our house is impossible to get a good photo of because of the positioning on the hill and the huge construction project under way, but I did my best - here's a view of the house from the street above, one from the street below (the back of the house) and one of the most visible side of the house.

We are planning to paint the roof edge the same grey color as the roof and the soffit the same color as the house, with the window trim an off-white.

Welcome any feedback on this! It's been pouring rain here so we are trying to get this done during a dry spell - all very tricky!

Will the decking stay a stained wood tone? If so, the navy could look great with a little bit of the warm wood against it. If you don't want it to look "blue" when the light hits, what about a charcoal type gray instead? The off-white trim and wood deck would still pop. I don't think the darker colors would look bad at all.

Why are the two choices navy or grey and why does the decision have to be today? Blue seems odd to me for a mountain house but admittedly I don’t usually like blue houses. Houses like this I like to recede- I would look at black fox or urbane bronze. That said I could see a medium grey with white trim working too.

regardless of the color you choose, I would not paint a contrasting trim color. Paint everything the same color.

here’s a color swatch taped to our exterior wall

@Lyn Nielson i like that idea! the window frames are white and we can’t change that - would you still suggest the same color as the house for the trim?

@BeverlyFLADeziner the first color i looked at was similar to the first dark green house you shared. my husband didn’t like it but i LOVED it! maybe we will revisit. i wanted it to be ”nature adjacent”.

natural green foliage will look great next to your Navy choice.

@Melissa Smedley yes what you describe is exactly the direction we are currently headed, redwood decking & off-white trim. I am also interested in the more ”monotone” look if it can work with the white window frames.

@Lyn Nielson great example! Thank you!

Here's the house in BM Westcott Navy which looks more like a gray to me than a navy.

I would do all the trim including the eave (roof edge) in something like BM Revere Pewter. That combination will blend nicely on the hillside with lots of trees.

Note: I suggest you paint the X under the balcony in the Navy so that it doesn't stand out.

What ever colours you decide on, test before proceeding.

Looks dark to me. I'd go with Cedar Mountains, instead, with a warm white trim. A color as dark as Wescott Navy with no contrasting trim will be one big, dark looming box.

Normandy or Hamilton Blue would be better than Westcotto Navy, IMO.

or Stonehenge if you want gray.

Thank you @Sigrid - the looming box syndrome is my concern with "all one color" as well. Fortunately it's pretty easy to test different trim colors, and we picked up a lighter grey to test on the roof edge and trim already.

We are starting on the body of the house now so I'll post an update when we have made more progress! Whatever we do it's going to look a lot nicer than the moldy shingles!

Why can't you paint the trim?

Dark gray, with white windows, black for the railings, etc.

When we look at the samples on internet, Westcott Navy really looks gray, not navy at all. Hopefully you've tested the colour before starting the whole project because it doesn't look at all like the picture you like posted by @Lyn Nielson .

Thanks @lisedv we specifically dont want a ”blue blue” so i am weighing if the all one color look will work with Westcott. FWIW the benjamin moore color consultant we met with is strongly advocating the Westcott Navy monotone look! we are testing it today.

I think it’ll look great! We have a very similar house situation. We are down a steep hill, on the north side of a hill in the Pacific Northwest, surrounded by a rainforest (though we cleared a good number of trees off of our property so we have some sunlight in the summer when the sun is high enough in the sky) and it’s hard to get decent photos of the house because of the terrain. But we went with a dark color. We did Sherwin Williams Grizzle Grey with bright white trim, and some cedar accents, we chose a black roof. We had some family members (the negative Nancy type) who told us we were nuts for choosing such a “dark” color and they said it was going to look awful. But we love it and we’ve had a ton of neighbors and locals (small community, so everyone knows who’s building...) especially compliment us on our house color. (So take that negative Nancy, LOL!) We chose the white trim because of our white vinyl windows and because hubby didn’t want to go too modern and he likes thickly framed windows. I think the house could’ve gone either way, either thick white like we did, or dark and modern and each would’ve looked great, but I was happy to let hubby get what he preferred. I’ll try to post some photos of our house in a bit...

An evening shot and one of the back of the house from the valley below

An evening shot with brighter white light on the porch compared to the other evening shot, and one we just took the other afternoon after hubby put on a few, subtle Christmas lights. It looks dark out, but it was only 3:30 or 4:00 in the afternoon, just a dark day.

Oh, and I hope people don’t judge my back deck too harshly. We are planning on adding another deck on the 2nd level (the bathroom window is already framed out to be turned into French doors when the time comes) and once that is done we are allowed to get rid of the x braces. Then it’ll be easier to paint the support posts the house color so they disappear. Right now it all looks awkward and we are aware of that. A bit at a time though. And yes, the top deck is high up in the air. LOL!

@skmom I am in Northern CA so a super similar climate and environment, thanks so much for sharing! Your house looks great and what a view! We painted a small area by the front door today and after being so worried about it - I LOVE it! It does look dark and almost black when it's dark outside but during the day the Westcott Navy color is really beautiful. I'll take a photo tomorrow when it's light out again. @lisedv it actually does read somewhat close to the color in that photo in the right light.

Thank you so much fay_fay, we love our view and location. I’m happy to hear you are liking the color you chose and I look forward to update photos!

If you go Navy paint, I would not do Redwood stain decking. I would avoid that red, white and blue look. If you want wood decking then natural wood as mentioned. Natural Cedar stain is what we use to get that look.

Our deck was so old we had to use a Sealer/Stain in semi-transparent and it is so gorgeous. Water based, not oil.

    What did you decide on?

Our house is BM storm and we love it. We live in Vancouver Canada.

We tested Westcott Blue by the front door and we really love it! A big rain is headed our way so we have to wait to do the real paint job.

great advice here! @tracefloyd good catch on the redwood / red white and blue thing!

i think we are going to go with a fairly monotone contemporary look and maybe a coral / terracotta color door. Stay tuned!

That is a beautiful blue color. I like the brown steps...goes good with the dark paint. Use a walnut stain or black walnut. A nice rich brown.

The wood looks like it should be sealed so get the sealer/stain. Semi-transparent stain will even out the wood tones while still giving some variation and not look too solid.

I think that color looks great! Can't wait to see it all complete, keep us updated. I love the look of the darker grey (or in this case grey/blue) against the wood tones of steps and deck.

Such a pretty and subdued blue--it's almost gray. I think terracotta would work very well with it.

IT'S COMING TOGETHER! I am so excited. The first coat of primer mixed with paint is going on now and will look so good! Stay tuned for more pictures by the end of the week.

Still on the fence about the trim color but right now I am liking the monotone look.

I can't find a good "Before" photo but this side of the house had disgusting moldy shingles and plywood before we did this! All new fire-retardant hardie plank, yay!
