Joycie X Basye's Blueberry is back in stock at RVR!

Repeat flowering with a scent Paul Barden once described as "true, Old Garden Rose". They infrequently offer the rose so if you're desired it, now's the time!

Kim, do you have William R Smith? No one has him in stock. I fell in love with him at the Huntington garden.

@judijunebugarizonazn8 the best I can do for you is to reprint Paul Barden's comment on HMF from 2009: "

Initial post 2 JUN 09 by Paul Barden

Now that this rose has been fully established in the garden for 5 years, it seems the Rust problem has gone away. It is now completely disease free and although it does not get any pruning, it remains a shapely 4 X 4 foot bush, with foliage nearly to the ground and an abundance of pink/crimson blooms well distributed around the lush canopy of blue-green foliage. The fragrance is one of the richest "old rose" scents I have ever encountered. Absolutely intoxicating. I am trying to persuade Kim to get someone to distribute this fine rose."

Mine languishes in a too small can, teetering between life and death and that's how it's cursed to remain due to the blamed engineered soil, liquid amber roots, Bermuda and Centipede grasses. I never thought to take full bush shots all those years ago when it was in the ground in the old garden.

@Z10Socal I'm sorry. I lost W.R. Smith to crown gall several years ago.

Where did you purchase him from? How was he before he passed on?

An old friend rooted it for me eons ago. I'd collected the Teas with the reputation of NOT mildewing easily as we "retired" to a more coastal climate. The flowers were pretty, but not cooperative for breeding, which is what I had hoped to use it for, so when he began his decline, I wasn't motivated to replace him. Otherwise, he's a lovely rose.

Thank you, Kim! That answers my questions quite well and gives me even more excitement about growing this rose. I love the color of this rose and I’m a sucker for fragrance. Also, the habit sounds perfect for the location I have picked out next to Elizabeth Bowers Rose.

@judijunebugarizonazn8 you're welcome! I'm glad it helped! The flower often reminded me of Heather Austin when it remained more cupped and the color darker. I'd originally made the cross hoping for it to be thornless, but, alas, it isn't. The bush is attractive and the miniature parent helped dwarf Blueberry's rangy habit. It also deepened the color, increased the number of petals and intensified the scent. Not bad for a rather unscented miniature.

I think Trish grows William R Smith. I'll ask her to post photos. She's in Australia, of course, and will not have any sources for purchase. That's fascinating information about Basye's Blueberry. Diane
