Good brand for luggage / rolling backpack?

last modified: 6 months ago

This backpack is perfect because when empty, it takes up very little space in my NYC apartment coat closet. It is also light weight so great for my back and taking on the subway.

I’ve used this 2-wheel backpack as a carry on for flying, on Amtrak, and car trips for 18 years. But the stitching is coming undone, the handle isn’t always retracting easily, and I’m tired of looking like a 6th grader and would like to up my look ever so slightly.

Now is a good time for luggage sales. Anyone have recommendations for a good, very durable brand for a two-wheeler back pack with good outer compartments, inner laptop pocket, is soft and compactable, and can hold 3-4 days worth of clothes and is all black or at least grown up looking?

I HATE shopping. Any assistance is greatly appreciated!

Who manufactured the one that lasted 18 years of use? I’d start with that company.

    Good luck.

It was made by Travel Select specifically for Macy's and they don't carry it anymore. :(

Seems like a lot of people like Jansport because when it breaks they send you a new one if you pay for shipping and taxes and wait a few months. As with everything else, I just wish it were easy and obvious to spot good quality these days. Yes, nice to have a return or warranty policy, but nicer if the product were good quality to begin with!

I just checked the Travel Fashion Girls facebook page and found this compilation someone made last April. maybe there is something helpful there?

Convertible Rolling Backpack Haul & Review

I purchased 8 different bags to review for an upcoming 15-day Europe trip (carry on only). My primary focus was to find a lightweight hybrid bag that rolls but also allows backpack functionality when maneuvering cobblestone walk-ways or going up/down stairs. I included 2 non-rolling backpacks for good measure. In the end we both preferred #5 Bagsmart. Hope this helps others looking for something similar.

I always look at REI for durable and high quality items like this...but they are not high fashion, more for the outdoors person than NYC, maybe? This one gets high ratings, comes in black: osprey travel pack

I’m pretty sure TravelPro makes a wheeled backpack that might be worth looking into. I really love my Maxlite carryon bag and always had great luck with the roll-aboards when I was traveling a lot with work. They took a lot of abuse and lasted forever.

I was so bummed that TravelPro doesn't make wheeled backpacks! That would have been my first choice before falling down this rabbit hole of shopping for another brand. I have one of their suitcases and it is good quality.

Oh shoot, Kendrah! I thought for sure they would have one! Maybe it’s Eagle Creek I’m thinking of.

I just googled "Travel Select rolling backpack," and found several sites with them. I don't know if they're the same as your 18 year old backpack, but Travel Select does appear to still make rolling backpacks.
