Dining Room in need of an update but unsure how….

last year

The small buffet in the corner of my dining room is struggling. I’m wondering if I should remove the clock and put art there instead? But if i put art there, what would work with the rest of my floor plan? Also, what type of decor should go on the buffet cabinet?

I’ve included pictures of my entry and living room as well. I’m standing in the kitchen to take these photos.

(I broke one of the picture frames and waiting for a new one. There are typically are 6 frames hanging there ;)).

Remove the clock and everything from the top of the cabinet. Hang on the wall the small piece of artwork that is leaning on the wall. Then put one nice pedestal bowl on the table. And that is it.

Your dining room wall is nice, clean, and edited. That is enough for this room. Think of the corner cabinet as a small, supporting accessory, not the star of the show. Less is more. You have a LOT of frames with a lot of matting in your home. Best if this small area doesn't call attention to either.

Thank you!! That’s true, I do have a lot of frames and I just realized how many I actually have displayed! Ha!

That small piece of artwork is also a black frame and seems like it’d be too small for the space. The frame is 14x18 and the cabinet is 34” long. Wouldn’t that framed art be too small?

If you want to be able to see many of your digital photos, then get a digital photo frame, load up a bunch of photos and have them rotate through. There are probably some frames with apps that allow you to do this through your wireless network.

Yes to art instead of clock and also yes to advice often given here: a longer chain for you chandelier. Otherwise it looks very nice!

Thank you! What type of art would you put there to ensure it goes with the art over the loveseat? How big? 3/4 the width of the cabinet?

I’m looking at your light over the table. It doesn’t look quite centered to me & my bet is that’s why it’s at the height it is. If the table is centered under the light then floor space is too tight between chairs & LR chair back + the walkway from door too tight. If I’m right, then it’s fine to leave as is. What I described is a case of function wins over form. Sometimes we cannot move the light the small amount it would need from where the builder put it.

ETA: I don’t mind the clock at all. It’s light & open & complements the hanging light nicely. I would remove the picture. Not sure what the larger piece is - looks like a design - maybe put that on table & set bowl on it?

You are exactly right… we can’t center the table under the light because we wouldn’t be able to walk through… an unfortunate mistake in the build. Would love to fix one day :)

The larger piece is a framed piece of art from Etsy. I will remove both pieces of art from sitting on the table.

I’m wondering if I maybe print that and hang in a larger frame?

The etsy piece is cute & a nice way to keep the black / white art theme going. How about try it leaning against the round mirror & find another place for the photos if you still want to display them. The print of the etsy piece would add some nice texture interest to the table under the mirror. BTW - guess how I know about your hanging light situation? Takes one to see it in other spaces. 😊

Don't worry about the art here coordinating with the piece that is over the loveseat. Your space is almost verging on overly matched. It is fine to have something else here.

    What about this print?

That print is ok. There’s nothing in the image that makes me remember anything in my life or makes me smile. But, the important thing is does it do that for you? Art we hang on walls of our spaces shouldn’t be chosen as a decor item - it should be appropriate to the space yes, but it’s not a lamp or rug thing. The right art piece there will give you some kind of nice feeling or memory when you look at it. You’ll know it when you see it. I’m guessing you get those feelings when looking at the large art hung next to your fireplace over the loveseat.

Alright, i just moved this from a different room. What do we think?

I really like this print. Could this work? Lean it on the table or hang?

My vote is to hang it. The shape of it is nice for that wall space. I can’t make out a clear view of image but looks like it has some tree color in front of the tall evergreens. Maybe do a mockup with paper cut to size to figure out best height to hang it. Lined up with door top will be too high but you don’t want it too low either. A nice image next to the door where you can also see outside. I like the fern / plant as table centerpiece too.

Thank you! I really appreciate it.

New arrangement with art and lamp is nice. Like the fern on the table, but even a long low piece on the table like a banana leaf in a silver finish would add more pop and brightness to the area. I would also retire the table runner until you need it for dining, it’s not doing anything for your space.

Hmm - I like the table runner - adds texture & warmth. I will say that I like color pops in places though so I would like some color on the table. It doesn’t have to be bright since the overall scheme is muted neutrals with cream, black, wood etc. But, a dark green pot would layer into that scheme nicely & add a touch of color without being distractingly out of place. But, we each have our personal styles so my choice is only that - my personal style. I do like deep rich colors though.
