Who is ready for the big snow storm? (Plus CA fires)

We are supposed to get snow and ice tomorrow. Hard to believe since its sunny and beautiful today. We are heading out later for a couple of errands then a late lunch/early dinner at a fav local restaurant. Who else is in the storm’s path? We’ve been replacing/updating overhead lights and a couple of lights came in earlier so that will be a good snow project. I’ve also been purging/organizing cabinets and closets, so can continue with that.

Also it breaks me heart to see the destruction caused by the California fires. Is anyone here affected? So sad.

Stay safe everyone!

Watching the fires, because we lived in the area for 10 years, so we know people there. Last information I could get, one of the fires was about 3-4 miles from my previous house. There might be hot spots 2 miles away and winds are still high, so not looking good for my old town.

It has been SO cold and windy here this week (right now 25 degrees with 45 mph wind gusts), but I have to remind myself that this is EASY compared to what's going on in CA. It is obviously just devastating.

We are expecting snow this weekend, but not as much as they originally forecast. Just a dusting. I have been in the organizing/cleaning phase too, which I think happens to me every year around this time! I have Big Brother Big Sister picking up donations next week, and I am dropping off bedding and blankets to another local organization next week too. Purge time! I am also setting aside time to organize a million years of photos.

Blessedly boring here in NE Illinois. Good weather to be out and about with temps in the mid-20s, but a few icy strips from Monday’s snow on sidewalks and curbs here and there.

We were to get 5to6 inches of snow in NorthAL. They are now saying snow/sleet/freezing rain, which to me is worse. The good news is that the temps are to rise fast, so it will melt fast.

What most that live where it snows all the time do not realize??????? We get snow rarely. Most do not have four wheel drive and no snow tires or chains.

We have no snow plows or salt trucks. We have, at best, dump trucks with a sand/ salt mix with a sorta plow on the front. If they get it down at the right time, it works. Last year it changed to rain too soon and washed it away and we had a he-/ of a mess.

Early predictions on last week's storm, we were to get 12-14 inches. Guess what we got? Not one flake!! We all were disappointed as we like snow and the poutdoor activities that comes with it. We are suppodosed to get 2 inches this weekend. We will see. We do get snow here and the roads have been pretreated a few times this year but haven't had much accululation. Global warming effecting us?

Sherry, I remember when I lived in Dallas, we northerners took a while to get that. But also recognized that slick conditions are not for driving in, especially surrounded by cars/drivers with less experience with such conditions, and we would stay home!

My neighborhood has a corner, the one I usually use when leaving the neighborhood, that is a downward slope. When it is snowy or slick, I go another way. Sand is the best thing at that corner, because they salt but then it refreezes overnight.

When I drive home in snowing conditions, I come from a different way, too, so that I approach the driveway from uphill, giving me gravity to help with the propel so I can make the turn to our uphill driveway. We have to make some modifications in our driving in the winter! and we are in a fairly normal neighborhood, not in the country.

We may get the first snowfall in over two years. Maybe an inch of snow but could also get sleet/ice which is more dangerous. It is also very cold! At least 10 degrees below normal. We had to get a new furnace last week, so at least we are set there. Just hope power stays on.

I don't know anyone personally in the fire areas, but I'm concerned for all. Our friends moved from California to Virginia. I always loved driving the PCH but I'd never want to live there due to fire danger.

We should get a couple of inches of snow plus ice/sleet/freezing rain in North Georgia which is bound to cause problems. This is the first accumulating snow we’ve had in ten years. School has been canceled for both my high schooler and college student. The college student lives at school but is in the same storm path. I think he’s envisioning an idyllic snowball fight in the quad. I hope he gets it!

A friend lost her home in Pasadena. Such a tragedy for so many.

In Venice we can see blue sky for the first time since the Palisades fire erupted. Much alarm when some areas in Santa Monica were put under mandatory evacuation — neighborhoods adjacent to Pacific Palisades.

The Getty Villa was saved, but Will Rogers’ historic ranch, stables, and polo grounds (now a state park) were lost. I haven’t read if the Eames house in Santa Monica Canyon was saved. The devastation along Pacific Coast Highway in eastern Malibu is shocking as is the loss of complete neighborhoods in the Palisades.

These are areas that many of us know well, and seeing billowing plumes of smoke, hearing the strong gusts of wind, and the constant background of sirens served as a grim reminder of the tragedies taking place just a few miles away.

We have had fires in Malibu, Topanga, the Palisades, and Brentwood for decades, just not all at the same time. Ditto for the fires in Altadena, Pasadena, Sylmar, and the Hollywood Hills.

I live where Sherry lives and we are as prepared as we can bet. Generator is ready if needed. We won’t starve. DH has a 4WD truck if we need it but i doubt we do.

DIL has been in Dallas for several weeks helping out with her new grandson. Our son drove home last week as he had to work. Her flight home to Birmingham (supposed to be this morning) was cancelled yesterday by Southwest with no further re-scheduling. She had to check out of the Airbnb and is hunkered down with our grandson and his wife and their new baby. Oh darn…a few more days to enjoy the baby! Anyhoo, we all told her to just try to reschedule for Sunday when hopefully things will be settled down.

Be safe everyone, especially sending hugs to our friends in CA!

Jilly, I love fried egg sandwiches with cheese and mustard! I toast the sandwich in the pan once I put it together. Is it a southern thing?

I talked to DS2 who lives in Dallas about two hours ago and he said they were only getting a few flurries. I looked at radar and seems the storm picked up.

Most of OK is closed, except our school finally let the kids go home with parents permission around 10:30. DGS is 16 and this is his first snow while driving. He has a 4wD and I saw him and DGD pull in safe and sound. Whew.

We're still having movie type snow, absolutely no wind. It's the kind of snow that can be swept with a broom on the sidewalk. My hands weren't even cold. It'll freeze soon. Ice Melt is on my Amz list. :)

Oak, no, DH is from Long Island and makes other good versions of egg sandwiches. :)

My version came about when we had snow days a couple of years ago … I just used what I had in the house and we loved how they turned out. Like you, I toast them in the pan. They’re so tasty!

We are a good 60 to 70 miles south of the fires in LA, but can see the smoke hanging over the ocean. The winds over the past 2 days have been horrendous with gusts approaching 70 mph in our area, but luckily no damage to our house or immediate neighborhood. Everything is outside is covered with black ash. I don't think it's from the current fires, it's blowing from the east and is still ash from the airport fire last September.

In NY, we always ordered 'baconeggncheese' on a roll from our local deli. It's a quintessential NY thing and always said with no space between!

I had a routine Physical scheduled for 8am, since I'm just getting over the flu-bronchitis, I made myself go...in a whiteout snow storm. It's 23F, 55mph winds. Saw a few accidents. I got an antibiotic for what might be a secondary infection, I've had this crud for 3 weeks. After lunch we plan on sitting by the fireplace. I made a noodles, bacon & eggs casserole comfort food dish for a cold day.

Last night we watched Fox News coverage of the CA fires. Horrible! Just so sad to see such devastation. I feel so sorry for all the homes lost.

Just sitting here freezing half to death. Its so windy here in Southeastern PA. I swear it blows through the walls of my house. I was even hearing a whistling sound from the front storm door. I can live with cold but windy does me in. Fortunately my bedroom is warm so Ive been cleaning dresser drawers. I now have five pair of old eyeglasses to donate and quite a collection of foreign currency, much of which I cant identify. Im sure google can help, but then what do i do with it. Anyone traveling to Albania soon?

I am so sorry for the people in CA who have lost homes and loved ones. I haven't been following closely, but it looks apocalyptic from the photos I have seen. I hope the firefighters stay safe and are able to get the fires under control.

I've heard it's quite frigid in the upper midwest right now. We're finally getting some of our cold winter temperatures here, but nothing extraordinary. We've surprisingly had more rain than snow this winter, which is unusual for us in Northern UT. Either is very welcome because it ends up snow in the mountains which we use for drinking water.

    @Jilly...thanks...

In 2013 there was a Black Forest fire. A HUGE loss! But....we moved up here, in a "fire-wise" area in 2018. It was untouched. They have cistern tanks of water and two HUGE lakes that fire fighters pump water from....they practice here ALL the time. We're required to keep ALL branches trimmed under the pine trees for 12' ....most do 20'.

We were on high alert for the Marshall fire caused by high winds that flew through tinder-dry Boulder a few years ago. Honestly calling what happens a "fire" doesn't adequately convey how explosive and powerful they are.

Sending good thoughts to everyone impacted.

It is cold and rainy here today. I was glad I didn‘t have to go anywhere. Hopefully we will not have any ice.

The devastation in CA is hard to fathom. My heart goes out to all of those affected.

Currently 4 degrees in Western PA. Brrr. After watching the national news regarding the CA fires, I cannot complain and will happily put on another layer of clothes. Texas ice and snow is no joke. Stay safe.

The snow doesn't worry me, but hoping we don’t get ice/freezing rain.

Apparently there is another fire in CA and I just heard over 9000 houses gone! Loss of life is now up to 10. Watching an update on the today show now. It’s just so sad! 😪

Both of us are from the South, me deep South. I haven't heard of "Fried Egg Sandwiches", but hubby would probably would love them, as long as NO green involved, such as spinach or kale. Cheese would be fine or any meat, except sausage, he hates any sausage.

We’re visiting friends in FL and it was a bit cool the last couple days but warmer than our place in SC. This morning our neighbors sent is videos of the snow. The cat sitter and I talked during her visit this morning and made contingency plans so she didn’t have to come back tonight. My neighbors offered to go over and tend to the cats tonight but I wouldn’t want them to fall and get injured on the icy driveway.
