Brenton Wood….Gone But Not Forgotten

last modified: 5 months ago

His music was the sound track of many summer afternoons at the pool at our club in the Sixties. It’s an indelible part of my life and his passing last week at age 83 leaves me thankful for the gift of music and memories he left behind.

I keep trying to leave a video link but the site is so off kilter it won’t display. Here is a link to one of his best known songs and i will put the same in the post above.

That was such a delight listening to it- but honestly I think it was the first time I ever heard it.

I opened the thread because I had no idea what it was.

I'm curious if it was a regional thing or I was just oblivious.

I love that song! Read this fantastic comment from the link, I love it almost as much as the song.

"Back in 1980 I attended a dance that was just playing music from the 1960s. I was just standing around bored, being my usual introverted self, when this song came on. This upbeat music motivated me to ask the most beautiful girl in the place to dance, a real knockout with movie star good looks, and she said YES. She turned out to be a sweetheart and a year later we got married and the next 30 years were pure bliss. My wife passed away in 2011 and I treasure every single minute of the time I spent with her. NEVER underestimate the power of a good song as it could change your life for the better when you least expect it."

“Never underestimate the power of a good song..”

Amen to that. I was 11 years old when Oogum Boogum came out and our crowd of girls learned to dance to that song. I got my first record player when I was nine and had a nice little collection of 45’s.

Oh yeah, part of my young soundtrack. What a talent. I think this was my favorite. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W79LIAy_qp8

That’s another classic, DLM, I can close my eyes listening to that and almost sixty years evaporate.

oooohhhh I know that one- the one DLM linked. I swear I never heard the name of the performer and could only think of the conference from my student days. (That was Bretton Woods. )

I had no idea he sang so many of these songs I know. His name is great too. He went from Alfred Smith to Bretton Woods.

It’s actually Brenton, not Bretton. There is something gutsy about renaming oneself!

I am really perplexed by why I've never heard his music. I was 12 in 1967. I had two older brothers and a sister whose music I listened to. By '69 and into the early 70s, I was really into Motown, so I didn't just listen to rock and roll.

DH is ten years older and used to DJ at a radio station in his 20s so he has a vast knowledge of music. He'd never heard that song either.

I'm a little younger and I don't remember it, but it seems like something that might have been in a movie. The one DLM posted I have def. heard before! Again, I think it was in a movie or commercial. Both great stuff.

Why is it I imagine KSWL is the woman in the white hat, dancing to this song?

My mother wore a black straw hat at the pool just like that Mtn, and when she swam laps during adult swim she wore a rubber bathing cap with paillettes all over it. I still remember how the light would occasionally catch one at just the right angle and flash in the sun. Listening to music of that era mines a rich vein of memories! I had every Supremes record and most of the other Motown artists’. When we left Florida my friends gave me a party that evolved into a Motown dance and ended with a carful of us singing at the top of our voices parked in front of my house…. my 42 year old son who was a 17 year old at the time STILL mentions coming home and finding the last of us in the car singing.

Thanks for posting this, kswl. I do remember these songs, some of the staples at our high school dances and summer fun. I had forgotten the artist’s name until I heard a few days ago about his passing. Such a smooth, easy vibe.

I haven't heard this song for a very long time, and never knew the name of it or the artist. But listening to it definitely brought me back and made me feel happy! Thanks so much for sharing Kswl!

Another classic— thank you DLM. Too many people think Soul Man originated with John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd!
