What does this LR room need?

I have to make this work but don’t know what direction to go in. There is two chairs of the same (one is where tree is) The crates have to stay (back part of room) it’s fairly small. Open for any ideas, recommendations.

No sconces and not near as many pillows . IMO if you need to move pillows to sit down there are too many. Take some pics after the christmas stuff is gone , I do not like the mix of patterns with the chair and the drapes . I agree the rug is the wrong color but mybe ina blue it would be very nice not too mauch pattern but nice texture.

I actually quite like this room, or my best attempt to imagine it not in Christmas dress. :) What bothers you about it?

The gray rug is doing you no favors with the creamy walls. Blue would be better

Perhaps best to post other pictures when Christmas decor is taken down.

This was how it looked before I made a change with the curtains and some of the wall decor.

The rug is blue not gray. I thought I needed more color. 🤷‍♀️

The colour of the rug doesn't work with the sofa and there's just too much decor - less is more.

I also prefer a non-patterned curtain with your decor and they should be hung so that the edge just reaches the window to let the all the light come into the room. I've simplified the decor, introduced new accent pillows and a woven natural material pouf.

Thank you lisedv!! This definitely helps me and is doable!!

Nice room. You've already edited and you just need to do more.

Your solid color curtains look better. Love the plaid pillows on the sofa and chairs. Don't use as many pillows. No runner on the coffee table. No tiered plant shelf behind the sofa. No sconces. White or tan lamp shade.

How often do you seat people in both chairs and the sofa? I'd remove the chair by the cabinet if possible.

That runner was something just added for fall. Trust me it’s been gone and was put in the donation box. I will remove the tiered shelving unit, remove sconces and change lamp shade. We do use all the seating. When I remove the chair at Christmas to put up the tree we struggle. We actually struggle with what we have when everyone gets together. But that’s another issue that can’t be fixed unless we move. 😊

    Thanks everyone!

I actually prefer the patterned curtains. With so many non-patterned surfaces in the room, I think the patterned curtains work well.

A G, I like the curtain patterns too but maybe not with the style of picture over the couch and the pattern on the chairs. I think they would be better in a bedroom.

    Just adding a front view...

Oops, sorry but it looked gray in the pic - this is the problem with not seeing a space IRL!

    I like your patterned curtains

Ever thought of Dog Crate as end tables or sofa tables? Or have a carpenter build over what you have already.

My daughter has the same curtains in her home- I love them. The gold pillows look great with them, and even the blue, but in the photo I’m not a fan of the plaid you have with it.

Update picture. My husband thinks the walls might need something with the curtains. This is the blue rug sample that I think I’m getting.

A big improvement, looking much better! but I don't see the sample of the blue rug you mention.

@lisadv rug sample is on the floor next to the couch in the right foreground

The blue sample is quite dark everything will show up on it. Ask me how I know.

I think the solid dark blue is much too dark, I'll see what I can find as a suggestion.

Update- I’ve made some changes, still a work in progress with removing, updating decor items. Thoughts?

Looking so much better, the rug is dark but works with the accent pillows and the art.

Perhaps new lamps would finish your update.

Looks warm and welcoming. Would you please add daytime photos with the curtains open and the lights on?
