Help with off-white paint color to go with natural stained wood

Hi! Long time lurker, first-time poster. 🤣 Id love your opinions on paint in this space! We are building a small open-concept lake cabin in Maine and have decided to paint an off-white (same color on the walls and ceiling).
The doors, trim, and ceiling beams (not yet installed) will be natural stained wood (1 coat each of Minwax Early American and Weathered Oak). The window casings are black. I’m thinking of an off-white that is warmish, and doesn’t lean yellow or pink. Our contractor only uses Sherwin-Williams paint, so I am looking at colors like Shoji White, Alabaster, Westhighland White, and White Flour.

As far as lighting, the kitchen area (where you can sort of see the beginnings of the island) faces east, and the double doors you can see face west (and the lake). Through those double doors is a screened in porch, so natural light coming in from those doors will be minimal, although we do have the windows up above and on the wall.

Fire away and thank you in advance!

Have you bought samples of the SW paint colors you're considering and made large poster board samples of each color + moved them around in the room in order to see what each will look like on your walls? I just painted the exterior of my house SW Alabaster - it's a very pretty color. I sampled about 8 different whites - including shoji and westhighland.

You really need to sample the colors inside your actual house in order to see what different light exposures (west, north, south, east) + time of day will do to the colors. You can order some pre-painted samples from Samplize that can be moved to different walls.

Thank you! Yes, I have Samplize samples for each of them, but we’re out of state so have to wait until we can visit to actually see them in the space. We’re going up in 2 weeks. The trim won’t be done by then, though, so I won’t be able to see the color against the natural stain until after I have to give the contractor my paint selections. So, any advice on colors that work well with natural stained wood would be appreciated!

I should note also that cabinets will be knotty alder (except the island, which will be navy blue) and countertops are Fantasy Brown.

You can get a good complimentary color with the help of a sample of the wood color finished on a piece of the wood you'll be installing. Also either a drawer front in the cabinet wood finish or ask the cabinet maker about matching your wood sample tone. I'd take the finished wood sample into the SW store and ask them to recommend an existing white or to create a white after analyzing the color of your sample. They can do that.

Is the navy blue a done deal? You may want to consider a lighter blue.

Match the white in the granite for the walls in an eggshell finish.

I take it from the fact your builder only uses S W paint is because he makes $ on it; and because it is not a custom build.

No one can really help you! Lots of info online of the "best off-white paint colors". You have to look at the samples in the space.

For a big decision like this I would order 4 sheets each of the main colors you are considering. It will be money well spent, specially since you are covering taller vaulted areas that aren't so easy to repaint yourself if you pick the wrong color. Having several sample sheets of each color will allow you to place them all together in one spot or place them separately around the house to see how the color looks in different rooms at the same time of day.

This chart from Camp Chroma (Laurie Sawaya is a regular poster in the decorating forums) should help too.

@elcieg Yes, we’re more of a navy blue people—the color is Blueberry by Starmark, and we love it. (The photo you posted is gorgeous, too!) This is a custom build; not sure why builder prefers SW.

@chispa, this is all very helpful, thanks!!

I can personally vouch for Shoji White from SW. We just finished a spec home with Shoji White ceilings, walls, and trim. We did Accessible Beige for the doors. It’s a subtle contrast that looks really sharp. I have a list of it on our page. Hope this helps! Good luck on your project!

@ Kerri L what color did you land on? We are doing westhighland white on both trim and walls and are thrilled with it. FWIW we have navy cabinets in one part of the house and knotty alder in the bath and kitchen island and we love how they look with the paint.
