Best neutral paint color for my living room

Room receives northern light primarily with some southern/eastern light from adjacent rooms but not a ton. The dining room in the pictures will now be my kitchen with white dove cabinets, Taj Mahal counters and most like Accessible Beige walls. It is under construction so wall color still up in the air. We’ve considered using a grass cloth wallpaper in the living room but would like to hear some paint color ideas that would go with my decor, maximize what little light it gets and accentuates my original plaster crown molding. Thanks!

You mentioned the crown molding so keep them the same white as the ceilings. The ceiling will appear taller....the illusion is the molding raises the ceiling height.

I would do an ivory on the walls to keep it neutral but allow the beautiful molding to be noticed.

Sherwin Williams Aesthetic White is a good coordinating off white with Accessible Beige. When thinking about whole home color it’s good to take cues from the adjoining spaces. Get a large sample to try and make sure it looks good with your rug - which I am a fan of btw. Nice room!

I like the white walls with your furniture and art but it's difficult to determine precise colours on a computer screen. I prefer warm whites so perhaps you can see how they compare to the white you have.

I would have comments on the furniture layout and rug but cannot give any comments without seeing the wall opposite the sofa as well as a full view of the wall where the window is.

    Please post more pictures.

Adding two interesting colored lamps will help enhance the couch area. You’ve already got a great painting so bringing some color into your accessories makes sense to me. These are from Lamps Plus.

If it were me, I would want to warm up the room with a more social furniture arrangement (2 armchairs facing the sofa), plus loads more texture (less glass and hard surfaces), and a more impactful rug - there’s only so much wall color can do

SW White Flour is a lovely white…and SW Shoji white would give more depth….I think adding a wood end table would add warmth to the room mixed with your gold accents. very pretty room just needs a bit of warmth it is very cool right now.

You have a big room you need more seating to cozy it up…consider changing out the rug.

I don’t have a picture but there is a fireplace (large) opposite of the couch and two off-white club chairs flanking the fireplace.

@Little Bird - what color are your walls and trim? What direction is your natural light exposure?

Hi Dani, the walls were already painted when we moved in, but I’m guessing it’s something pretty stark white like Chantilly lace. I would prefer something more like white dove, but the 2700k lights do make the room look much warmer. The living room faces west, so even with the lights turned off, in the afternoon the sun glows pretty warm with all the brass in the room

From the 2 pictures I can see what bothers me most is that the 2 chairs in the bay window seem far away and not part of the conversation area. I would have a window seat with accent pillows and move the 2 chairs and table up near the sofa, something like this...

JM we really need to see the entire room if possible..the fireplace and the other chairs you have that you mentioned.

This room seems so familiar to me--you've posted previously no?

But to your question, if this is a north facing room, you need a warm white, something with yellow in it. I know yellow is out of favor with most Houzzers, but the fact remains that yellow-ish whites will warm up a north facing room. My dining room faces north/northeast and I have BM Linen White on the walls and trim. It's a nice color with lots of warmth in it. And it works in a traditional home like yours.

    SW Topsail.

You might like a warm white like snowbound

Alabaster paint might be another good color

I think Alabaster could be lovely.

Hi all, I can’t get a current full room pic as my kitchen/dining room are gutted and the furniture that is in the living room is covered and some of it are in a different room. But this is a photo of the room from when the home was staged for sale before I bought it. The club chairs are flanking the fireplace angled toward the center of the room.

JM thank you! helps us get a better idea of what you may need….would help if you can just do a photo of one of the club chairs helps us understand your style better and color for the walls too…it really is a beautiful room.

SW creamy can lean yellow. My kitchen cabinets are that color. I love it!
Another (less yellow) option is SW Antique. Worth getting swatches of these to add to the mix.

You need to get samples to hang in your room in that light for best end results.

I am not a fan of white or beige or gray personally. How about a light blue since you have blue furnishings?

If you really want warm, yellow is the way to go. It's a lovely color that has fallen out of favor but it works! Remember Nancy Lancaster's famous yellow living room?

    JM where are you?

Diana is correct. If you really want warm - yellow is it! :)

Or red. Or orange. Those colors are very intense colors for an LR. Red is perfect for any dining room/area, though! Which is why it is most often used in restaurants/eateries.

In your case, I would say go for the yellow/gold! Would be beautiful with your blue sofa, your art - plus, looks like you already have gold accents in the room. I will have to look at your picture closer. Blue and gold is a classic and most elegant pairing.

The warm colors, including yellow/gold, are “trending” again. And for some - really never left.

Yellow/gold is just a classic, classic colorway. Not for everyone... and that is fine. But the yellow ”hate” that is often evidenced here on this forum is very unfortunate... considering the fact that this is supposed to be a site about design.

Here's a great blog post about yellow rooms in a historical sense:

    https://laurelberninteriors.com/yellow-walls-why-do-you-hate-them-so-much/

I am familiar with that one, Diana! In fact, I posted that same article a while back on my discussion post! I think that might have prompted your directing me to the Nancy Lancaster room - which I was not aware of, and that room is totally amazing. I am really glad you mentioned her here, because just the other day I was trying to remember her name, so that I could look at that room again!

The Laurel Bern article insightful. I have to read it again.

Well here it is--I'm sure the decor is not for the average Houzzer, but no one can argue that the room isn't warm and sunny!

A lovely warm white with a golden glow is White Blush from Benjamin Moore. I must say that Samplize sample stick ons really make choosing paint so much easier!

PPG’s color of the year last year was a yellow - with a neutral cast. It’s called “Limitless.”

For a bit more saturation, but still understated, Farrow & Ball’s Savage Ground is very nice.

I’m just trying to close on my home & however I have lighting from all over my kitchen dining & great room all are open to foyer. I’ve used Dover white all over as I will change some things in the other after closing. However I have brought in wood tones to go w/my white & wood cabinets & I plain to do a faux effect that flanks ea side of the fireplace. It still will be in a white background. I DO LOVE YOUR REAL PLASTER CROWN. I LOVE THE IDEA OF A DEEP NAVY GRASSCLOTH ON EACH SIDE OF YOUR FIREPLACE TO COMPLEMENT UR SOFA. You CAN NEVER EVER GO WRONG W/TEXTURE. AS IT CAN ADD A TOUCH OF ELEGANCE, SOFTNESS OR BOLDNESS!

Sorry the mantel isn’t finished yet, however I found a wallpaper that has a unique paint technique & I’ve done a lot of Faux painting & I believe it to be what is called Silk Plaster! Has little shimmer of mica in it

You could also try dry brushing ur plaster with rotten stone which gives a more earthy element or do a bit of gold or silver for a distress making that ur element to stand out around the room. I personally would like the NAVY GRASSCLOTH. Go on Etsy has they have a lot of different wall coverings & search or search on here as they all sell samples & put it up on next to ur fireplace

I definitely like the idea of the bay windowed area being in navy or a Navy GRASSCLOTH as u have navy behind ur bookcases,

    Ok here's my 2 cents . . .

But: a navy would look good and set off the gold!
