I didn't used to like this guy

(no not that guy) but he is growing on me. He is kind of funny.

I used to watch his decor stuff but I like this new "series."

I will say that most people who need to hear this, would never listen anyway.

I’ve never heard of him 🤷‍♀️

Only 2 cutting boards? He's not cooking in my kitchen!

I've never watched him before - but he hit on a few items for me:

    1. Excess water bottles. I've never personally bought any - but people have given them to me for whatever reason.

    2. Ugly mug shelf - same as @mtnrdredux_gw - kids or SO have brought them home for whatever reason.

    3. rubber band collection (I keep them - but I also use them = they leave the house).

    4. pans/lids - I took some of my mom's kitchen items after she passed - and I definitely didn't need them.

By far the worst - SPICES/CONDIMENTS - my SO is horrible about checking to see if we have a spice or condiment he needs before he makes a trip to the grocery store. At the end of one summer, we had five mustards (between refrigerator and pantry). I can't tell you how many grilling "rubs" we have (he's really talented at grilling food - but we don't need 3-4 of the same rub that he likes to use on the rotisserie chicken that he makes!)

Having a small kitchen has prevented me from hoarding too much there, but don’t ask me how many mugs I have.

I passed everything but the rug - keeping mine - cookbooks, and the real problem: glass jars. I actually use some regularly but have way too many. I actually went through them a few weeks ago and couldn't let go of more than a handful. I guess the holiday cookie cutters are also a problem as I have never yet used, most of them, but I delude myself into thinking it's ok as they are stored with the holiday decorations. (Which are a much, much bigger issue!) PS. I enjoyed the video!

@Mimou-GW, I think you need at least four. One for meat with a groove for juice, a small one for cocktails, a general one, and then at least one more if people are helping you cook.

I never heard of him either. He would love my kitchen with 2 exceptions - I have and use more than 2 cutting boards regularly and rubber bands. Seriously, I use them all the time to the point that I BOUGHT a bag with a variety of sizes so I always have what's needed. DH uses them all the time, too. When DS and fam were here over the holidays they went looking for rubber bands to corral various game pieces. I also keep all kinds of string (I have become my grandmother) but again, it gets used regularly.

    I can't say I like him - I find him annoying.

@DLM2000-GW, You don't have to listen to him. As I mentioned, you can scan the transcript. Each item he discusses is in bold.

I have to have a rug by the sink because I need to protect my floor from water drips as I'm moving dishes into the dishwasher. Otherwise, I'm not guilty of any of the other categories. I do have glass jars, but they get used regularly. In fact, I just bought some Mason jars. It's much easier for me to keep dry ingredients dry by adding food-safe dessicant packs to glass jars.

    I can't say I like him - I find him annoying.

I watched his decor videos and 1) found him annoying and then 2) wasn't that impressed with what I can see of his own space.

But for some reason he keeps popping up, and this time I thought he was spot on on a lot of it, and kinda funny, though still kinda annoying. I think I like his rapid fire delivery.

He's fine. He's snarky but not excessively so IMO. I like that he gets to the point.

We have two mug shelves. One holds DH's ugly faded souvenir mugs. The other holds my plain white cute ones. About 10 each? They don't mingle.

I use rubber bands all the time. And clothes pins. He probably doesn't like those either.

morz - I'm sorry you had a scare with the armoire, I'm glad you weren't injured!

I have a sideboard that holds my wrapping things. It also gets tippy if I pull the drawers out too far. It's only waist high so I've always been able to catch it.

I had never heard of him, but oh boy did he nail me on a few things. I’ve actually already worked on getting rid of the excess water bottles and most of the mugs. Mugs seems to keep creeping back in somehow. I’ve also rid our kitchen of a lot of excess kitchen gadgets and now am working on the too many tablecloths, placemats and napkin situation. Two cutting boards doesn’t work for me; 3-4 I could live with. And 3 rubberbands is not enough around here.

I made a pitifully small dent in the cookbooks last year, but I still have far too many and admittedly some are sentimental from my mother. Maybe that’s my next move, and I’ll make another pass through those.

I hate a cluttered kitchen so I have very few "extra's" that I don't need. For some reason my DH hoards glass jars but he never reuses them. He keeps condiment packages and a couple of times a year I get rid of them. I keep a couple of smaller glass jars, wash them out well and use them to take salad dressings in when I'm taking a salad to friends for dinner.

My SIL gave my husband Xmas leftovers in an old cool whip container. The container mentioned a contest to win a trip to Wimbleton, and the entry deadline was…wait for it…Nov 1986. She has been reusing a single-use plastic container since 1986. A few years ago, we bought her a set of Rubbermaid storage containers to encourage her to get rid of the ancient, degrading plastic ones. But obviously, it didn’t work.

I feel like my kitchen is pretty clutter free. I have matching mugs and ”Tupperware.” No single use plastic or random glass jars. I do have mason jars for pickles and salad dressing. No rug. No magnets, novelty cups, or shot glasses. No rubber bands in the kitchen. Maybe one or two in the junk drawer? No condiment packets. My kitchen’s size requires me to limit small appliances.

I have too many cookbooks and should probably cull the heard. I have more than two cutting boards, but they‘re all used reguarly and are stored out of sight. Not making a change there. We do have lots of water bottles. I swear they multiply!

He used to pop up on my youtube feed a lot. I've watched a few. What I agree with him on most of the time is when he fully admits most won't agree with him!! Last I saw his feeds he was just moving from an apartment to a house. Do we think he will give us landscape advise? hahahahha

I too never heard of him and I did enjoy this. I have generally been pretty decent at decluttering and especially since we downsized, most of these things are well under control. I remember going through the mugs in particular ( so many of the "barcelona" ones) and offering on buynothing. So now I think I probably have maybe 12 or 14 for the 2 of us--- and I'd say only 2 should I toss ( a kitchen designer - who we did not use- sent us a goody basket that included 2 mugs with their logo on it).

I do go through the tupperware regularly and when a top has been missing- the bottom is history

When we remodeled our kitchen and therefore emptied everything , it was amazing that we had EMPTY DRAWERS after moving the stuff back because we really had streamlined.. Well, now the cooking utensil drawer is crammed. The potholders and oven mitts are what has overgrown. I keep thinking I will really empty that drawer and go cull.

    Anyway I enjoyed it.

I just recently found him. I find him entertaining because of his rapid fire speech with snark thrown in. I do think that many things he says have some validity. You definitely need to listen to what he has to say and temper it to fit you. I have fits about excess water bottles and travel mugs but will keep more than 3 rubber bands!

Not guilty of anything on his list except keeping disposable plastic containers for food— and I only do it because I send so much food home to DS and GF, DD and SIL and my mother that I am missing TWENTY of my expensive Rubbermaid brilliance food storage containers. So now I send food home with them in the free disposables. And I have several cutting boards for food safety, not hoarding, so I don’t consider that criticism valid.

I’ve never seen this guy before but his manner is so off putting I don’t imagine I would take decorating advice from him. 😎

@hhireno, that is amazing. Some sort of record.

I would never MW in a reused take out container, but I do like to keep them. They seem like "free Tupperware." I am going to stop doing that. I don't have many but I take his point about degradation.

He reminds me so much of someone I work with. And I really like the person from work. So, yeah, I enjoyed his rant. (I also just purged my awful collection of mismatched, aging food containers and ordered Rubbermaid Brilliance ones instead.)

A few years ago DH was at Costco and picked up snapware. It's very nice but takes up so much more room.

I purged my Dollar General plastic containers last year, i.e. ones that were discolored or no lids to match, or lids with no containers to match. Well, that was last year. Then I started taking small meals or servings of food to my aunt and "needed a better sized container than I have". Now when I open the cupboard door, they're starting to tumble out again. ugh. Many have no recycling instructions on the back either.

Glass bowls and plates can be awkward or even dangerous to transport, even tho I'd prefer to use them. Kind of OT, but yesterday I took my recycling down to the town bins. The dumpster for plastics was FULL nearly to the top. The ones for paper and cardboard about a third full. Perhaps we all decided to dispose of plastic at the same time, but I can't help but see a message there - we sure use a lot of plastic! Glad it's getting recycled at least.

ETA: Went to feed the cat, and just happened to peek inside the cupboard with the plastic containers. I tossed two dinner plate containers with lids that I really like but have seen too many times in the microwave. I put them in the recycle bag. So - I managed to get rid of two!

Im pretty good at not accumulating too much stuff. I think its because I grew up in a house that had a lot of stuff, although neatly stored. I always have some takeout containers on hand because I send leftovers home with my son frequently. I dont think they were ever meant to be used in the MW. I like takeout containers because they dont have to be returned.

I am weeding out mugs now. I have a set that came with an old set of dishes. The only reason they survived is that no one used them.

Ive managed not to immolate my potholders and just throw them in the wash as needed.

Travel magnets? How can you have too many travel magnets? Mine are stuck to an upstairs filing cabinet. This is a small sample. They will all go to the thrift shop some day, but in the meantime it reminds me of fun times. Fortunately, they dont stick to a stainless fridge.

    I didn't think so either!

I have logged significant hours finding magnets for my MIL and step-MIL, both collectors (I found it a bit odd to want magnets from places other people have been, but you never know w grandmothers). Both had metal boards made to hold their collection. It is definitely a thing. My cleaning person collects shotglasses. A lot are from her (very extensive) travels, but she also liked me to get ones for her from countries she has not been to. Great fun in Muslim countries finding a shotglass.

What’s everyone using all the rubberbands for? I don’t have a single one.

Feathers, we live in a dry climate so I often use them to make sure food in plastic bags is securely sealed. Most often on bags of bread or rolls.

I also use them to secure open bags that store things that could get messy if the seal breaks. Rice, chia seeds, frozen peas, etc.

I use a twist tie or the slide closure then fold the excess plastic and put a rubber band over the package.

We have a neighbor (about 5 doors away) who brings us dinner once or twice a month. Loves to cook, and he's good. He has a couple of lidded pots he seems to like that he brings soups, chowders in. When I've washed and am having DH return them, I secure the lid (knobbed) on the pot to one of the pots handles with an asparagus rubber band. One band going each direction so the lid cannot move, be dropped or chipped.... I'm using two just there each time he's fed us.

I have never been accused of being too new age or avoiding junk food or products, but I absolutely will not microwave anything in plastic. That's been a no-no for me for a long time.

Feathers, i had the same question. I cannot recall the last time i needed a rubber band. I use metal clips to close things

The clips have failed me a few times. Once with frozen peas, all over the freezer, the other time was chia seeds on the kitchen floor. Now I seal those things up like Fort Knox :)

I have an unadorned fridge, while my MIL and SIL cover, and I mean cover, their fridges in magnets. Front and visible sides. That’s fine, different stroke for different folks. But it took years for them to stop buying us magnets (and xmas ornaments) from places we haven’t been. And are clearly not our style. They must have been disappointed not to receive magnets from our travels, but we didn’t want to perpetuate the ritual. I thought when my SIL replaced her fridge and had to remove the multiple, multiple items, maybe she wouldn’t bother putting it all back. But she did because it’s what looks right to her. I get anxiety in her house because she has so much decorative stuff that reads as clutter to me. She’s happy with the look and I only go there a few times a year.

I keep a flashlight on my kitchen windowsill. Sometimes I drop rubber-bands from produce on the handle. I also have those silicon support bracelets for leukemia and whatnot on there. When I have a house full of visitors, people use those bands to identify their glassware. I don’t know how else I use them but I occasionally do.

I feel a little bad that he used to really annoy me, too, but I watched him again trying to keep an open mind and did find him funnier than I remember--but to a point. As is often the case with most home decor you tube videos, I burn out about 3/4 the way through and it all starts to sound repetitive. Actually there are many HW videos that I put on mute about 2 minutes in.

I am guilty in several areas. I have too many cutting boards, I should probably get rid of a couple. But I store them horizontally in a cabinet so they don't really take up too much space. I like to keep a small cutting board in my cutlery drawer to do quick jobs and be sure to protect the counter.

I culled my mug collection a while ago. I have three sentimental mugs left and will keep them until the handles fall off.

I love having access to rubber bands and keep them in my "junk" drawer. I use them to close bags, hold travel containers together and lots of general unexpected needs. I remember being surprised when Whole Foods routinely wrapped to go boxes in rubber bands. They really do make sense in those situations.

I hate fridge magnets and never used them. My Mom loved collecting them, and we have a bag full to divide between the grandchildren when the time comes. So I can see their sentimentality.

His video did remind me that I need new potholders. But I really do need more than two. When scrambling around cooking for a crowd and moving between oven and stove I need at least four.

Don't have any rugs in my kitchen but that's only because I gave up finding something I love. I really should have a nice rug in front of the sink. I have hardwood in the kitchen so a rug would provide protection from water damage. This video has actually inspired me to start looking for one!

I have a much hated porcelain tile floor in my kitchen so I have an anti-fatigue mat in front of the sink.

Salonva, Im with you about no mw-ing in plastic. I even cover stuff with paper towels rather than plastic wrap. .

Hahaha ded, my DH seems to think those need to be kept forever, too. Computer/laptop boxes too.

Oh, Dee, I can't imagine cleaning up after chia seeds!

I just watched the video, fast forwarding a bit. I dislike clutter, and don't have a lot of storage in my kitchen. I pare down regularly, and use most of what I have on a daily/weekly basis.

But I do have 6 cutting boards, and won't apologize for any of them. :-)

Moving twice in 2 years really helped to reduce my kitchen clutter. Also we moved into our 'winter' place which was fully furnished and no room for extra stuff. I do have 5 cutting boards of different sizes which are in pretty constant use. I did make a mental note to match up the plastic tupperware. I know there are bottoms with no matching lids. I am definitely guilty of saving those plastic containers that cottage cheese and burrata come in. In my defense, most are in the garage storing misc screws, picture hangers, etc.(that's a whole separate video!).

I was inspired/embarrassed by this video to get organized. My cabinet is now stocked with Brilliance tupperware and I've organized the spice cabinet with his and her shelves. Dh has all the curries and hot products on one shelf while the upper shelf is dedicated to baking spices. It looks so much better (and I threw out a ton of old jars that barely smelled anymore.)

He sounds just like Jonathan on Queer Eye. I tested DH to see if he thought so too and had him listen without watching. He said it sounds like Jonathan, which probably made him wonder why Jonathan was talking about Tupperware.

I just watched this video of his and liked it. The more I watch of him the more I appreciate his humor. Maybe I just prefer looking at ideas of what to do rather than not do. Thanks for introducing him Mtn.!

Enjoyed the kitchen session. I am guilty of too many mugs, mostly because of my Starbucks collection from my vacations. I did warn my close friends that I was collecting and planned on limiting my collection to only those mugs I bought on location. So no gifts so far, yay. I do have a few other assorted mugs. When I run out of space I will cull the collection. In the meantime they bring me joy.

Used to be a member of the pot holder club, but I finally broke free. Really, it was only one ancient potholder, given to me by my husband's grandmother at my wedding shower. I can be overly sentimental, it was long past it's prime. I finally took a photo and threw it out.

Agree with most of his recommendations.

One good thing about having renters once a year (the same family for several summers now), it is forces you to take a hard look at this stuff. I have switched to these cork trivets for some instances where I had used cloth hot pads, and I discard them when appropriate. And i get a set of new hot pads every year just before they come, LOL

Something he said in the video also emboldened me to give away some home decor items that were gifts and just never really liked. (wincing) Not many of those but...

I have six identical pot holders. Some are in better shape than others. I need all six. I’m a messy cook. They get wet and are then useless, so I have to grab another. At least one pair is generally in the laundry room. Like I said, I’m a messy cook.!

My first watch….I found his snarking manner sort of amusing and also liked his almost tripping over his words rapid fire speech. But how seriously can he be taken as a designer ( is he?) if the room he’s in is his own? However, he nailed me with the potholders.

Marti, he is not a designer and never claims to be. He recently sold his last place after a relationship breakup (they were getting ready to start building a house) and is moving to a new place soon.

I've watched him for awhile, but started skipping to the various sections on many videos. Too much that doesn't interest me now.

On a side note, I don't care for his new hair color.

. But how seriously can he be taken as a designer ( is he?) if the room he’s in is his own?

I said the same thing Marti but then when he did a house tour I liked his place a lot more.

If he posted the room in his background on the other side and asked for advice, they'd run after him with pitchforks screaming about the big clock : )

His "coked up" delivery makes me feel physically jittery! Otherwise, he's not wrong about what we don't really need - although I always want a rug in my kitchen.
