Please help with curb appeal for 8a Coastal Carolina island home.

Hello all. Please (beg…beg) help us with curb appeal for this 8a Coastal Carolina “beach” house. We like the rest of the house but just not the exterior. We would like to keep landscaping native and simple, if possible. I am going to try to include a photo if the backyard bushes if youd like to use.

A desire is to give the enclosed front porch some privacy with landscaping as opposed to just relying on curtains or shades...we’d like to sit out there and be surrounded by nature, not curtains.

We would also like to give some interest to the porch and fascade…it’s just very plain. Although we are not opposed to residing, if need be, we would definitely appreciate budget-friendly suggestions as well.

The pineapple palm (?) is in front of the master bedroom, providing much needed privacy, so although its location is strange, it is necessary.

THANK YOU SO MUCH (in advance!!) for any/all help!!

Sigrid, THANK YOU SO MUCH for your response!

Yes, the driveway is long-ish. We could fit 4-6 cars in the driveway, dep on the lengths. The yard in narrow. We would like to obscure the view from the front and from neighbors on the left. The right side has the entry door into the porch and access to the front door (not ideal).

What type of plant would you recommend that’s large enough as a privacy shield? I do love the idea of the grasses. Does the one that you mentioned grow fast?

House on left? And to the back of your house? Looks like a large tree & shrub there already. Maybe a plant needed behind them? Would you post pic of that side of your house to show the layout? The space & property lines are important. Are any of the plants there protected species that you can’t remove to replace with a fuller bottom type plant?

Grasses generally reach full height their first year. How big and fast the clump grows wider/thicker, I don't know. If you have a thin clump, you'll have some screening. There are plenty of cultivars of Big Bluestem, with different colors. You can guess from the names, Blackhawks, Red October, etc.

Azaleas tend to grow fairly slowly, so if you transplanted your lovely azaleas to the side of your driveway, it would take a while for screening, but other natives grow pretty quickly. Inkberry, for example. A collection of larger grasses would work, too.

    Here are a few suggestions:

I’m wondering about large grasses alone- not so much if part of a mixed planting—because you’ll be cutting them down each spring. Yes they will grow up again pretty quickly, but will be short for awhile. So some kind of mixed planting small ornamental tree or large shub that can be deciduous but with branches that blur, a couple of broadleafed evergreens. Or kind of mark off those spaces and then the grasses may give you a bit of height while others are growing.
In some areas some of such grasses will seed around. some of the perennial experts can weight in.
