Ceiling fans and chandelier in large living room?

last year
last modified: last year

We are currently building and are a bit stumped on lighting in our new living room. The goal is for the house to look like an old Greek Revival with lots of period details. My husband (who never expresses much of an opinion on anything) has asked for a ceiling fan in the living room. We're in Georgia, and this would be practical for us much of the year. I'm OK with the idea of plain white ceiling fan(s) that sort of disappear into the ceiling, but want to make sure there's enough light in the room. I'm adverse to can lights in this house - they just don't look "old house" to me. So I'm wondering if I could do 2 all-white ceiling fans that are close to the ceiling, and a pretty fixture that would hang lower than them (to avoid strobing) in the middle of the room. The room is 24x17' and has 10' ceilings. Would this work? Has anyone seen a combination of ceiling fans and a chandelier/hanging fixture in the same room before?

Here is a mock-up of the room (to scale) for reference:

You might want to consider the original Hunter ceiling fan in cast iron. Honestly, I couldn't find any Greek Revival rooms with ceiling fans.

Skip the fans : ) That said, I don't see "period" anything in the mock up

Keep the fans but use wall sconces and floor or table lamps for lighting. A lighting consultant who can come to your home is a great advisor. Your home is reflective of Greek Revival, no a historical preservation. Comfort is key

It’s Georgia, and fans are a necessary (decor) evil. I live in Houston and inherited a room with a white fan, white ceiling. It’s not bad and my ceiling is only 8’. It does kind of disappear. I hate can lights too and use lamps and sconces for lighting. Try to find a lighting specialist who can help you plan this. Your Greek Revival sounds just lovely! I don’t think anyone is going to hold you to exact specifics for a period perfect home. Make it comfortable.

I'm not seeing Greek Revival, either, fireplace and woodwork that you are showing is not close to that period, so I wouldn't worry about trying to style fans for the room.

Check out lighting/fans on Wayfair. There are some very nice choices.

IMO we need to see your house since what I see in the mock up is in no way Greek revival.. Do you have AC? Sorry but good lighting is a neccessity IMO always no matter what style the space is . The mock up is not helpful but pics of the actual space and your decor would be. Post more pics here in a comment DO NOT start another post since right now it is hard to find other posts . I also would love to see what you think is Greek Reviavl syle

If you're going for period details, you might consider a coffered ceiling and substantial trim at the ceiling, base and around windows and doors. And if you want fans, then no chandeliers. I agree that fans are very helpful in the warm months to circulate air and cut down on cooling bills. But both fans and chandeliers would be a bit much.

    This one looks very nice:

We didn't do any indoor fans in our FL house. No need with a properly designed HVAC system.

No fans…beautiful chandelier..if fan is a must go with simple white..add other accent lighting to bring in your greek revival style.

Thank you all! I should have mentioned that the mockup is for proportions and furniture placement only, it's not at all a reflection of the actual furnishings and architectural details in the finished space. Right now the space is just 2x4s, so I don't have photos to post, but the photos posted by Home Interiors with Ease are pretty spot on!

I agree with those of you who say get rid of the fans, but again, my sweet husband is asking for fans, and since 99% of the house is what I want, I'd like to give him the one thing he wants. So the fans need to stay. The question is, can I light it effectively with just lamps and sconces, or do I need an overhead light as well? What about fans with lights? Should I cave in and put in some can lights? What about the 2" ones that don't look like big holes in the ceiling?

If hubby wants fans, then go for it. And yes, you can illuminate any space without using chandeliers and recessed lighting. Recessed cans are awful in living rooms, and especially if you want a historical look. I recently saw a living room with small LED can lights installed in the coffers of a ceiling. It was not a very warm or inviting look.

Your ceiling is not so high that you need to light up the cavernous space above. You could install small "eyeball" lights in front of the fireplace. But strategically placed table and floor lamps, sconces, and uplighting will definitely light up the room. It's a living room, and you will presumably be entertaining, reading, sitting by the fire chatting, watching TV (is that a TV/art/mirror over the mantel?). None of these activities require overhead lighting for tasks like kitchens and bathrooms do.

with the size of the room, i dont think strobing would be an issue, that said, no to fan.

Britt stated that the fans are the only items that her husband wants--she has the choices of everything else in the rest of the house. Why would you say "no to fan"?

Yes do your must have fans keep them simple white with white ceiling…floor lamp, sconces, table lamps are all you need. Come back when ready we can help you!
