This is as close as I would get to an 'entertainment center'. They are dated and not designed to accommodate changing technology.

    This below is 100% custom.

I have a large solid oak entertainment center in my living room that I purchased in North Carolina 42 years ago. It was made by the Dedeaux family. It holds my family momentos, sterio components, records, CDs, and TV. It looks new!! I still love it.

@BeverlyFLADeziner What exactly is dated? Suddenly I'm anxious. Is the furniture type dated or the built in type dated? Or both?

What is the new way to deal with all the boxes and wires?

Look into Ikea's Besta Series, you can build it to suit your needs.

    Open shelving or with solid doors, or doors with glass in several style doors and finish options.;

If you can't DIY it or know someone to pay for the work perhaps components would be the way to go. Tall book shelves, a credenza between, small kitchen cupboard boxes across the top. IKEA has these sorts of build it to fit your needs components.

The definition of dated varies depending on who is making the judgement!

I did a built-in with some storage and shelves, and put a 75" Samsung Frame TV in it. Technology isn't changing that much at this point. If they come out with an even thinner TV, then it will still fit. I definitely don't need anything bigger than 75" in this room. If I thought I was going to go bigger at some point I would have designed a larger opening. We have a 100" TV in another room, so I never see the need for a bigger TV here.

We plan on being in this house till we can't, so conservatively another 20 years. Still don't see the technology changing drastically anymore ... unless they are going to implant chips in our brains/eyes and we'll no longer need a physical TV at all!!

I've also seen some people here say that displaying things is dated. Such an odd statement and idea. I have things given by family, or collected in travels, and I like displaying them, so I see them everyday.

Susie Smith look through lots of inspiration photos and design something that meets your family's needs. Just leave enough room for the largest TV size you would ever consider in the space.

Beverley’s comment is right on the money. Salvation Army would’nt accept my entertainment center. Told me they’re not taking them anymore.

Is that YOUR room in the first picture? You have no wall to contain a built in on the left side.

What is "moody".... as it applies to a wall with a tv and storage. ? Simply a dark stain or paint color?

IF that is you wall and where you want it? What are the dimensions of that wall. Where is the rest of the room from all angles if it is your room? By that I mean pictures, all angles.

Moody???Paint it dark green and put the cute stuff on it and get a TV thta fits . Sorry I hated these when they were a must for TVs so not much help That rug says nothing about moody decor either BTW now you gat a nice low cabinet you wall hand the TV so none of the wires show and done a nice big TV .

You don't need a wall to contain a built in on the left side ... you just do a finished cabinet or side panels ... just like you do in kitchen!

OK if entertainment centers are out, what's in? Don't worry. I don't have one and don't want one. I'm just asking.

TV’s are being wall mounted nowadays, over fireplaces or consoles.

What boxes and wire? Everything thing is connected by Bluetooth (wireless) except for where your internet enters your home.

Technology keeps changing and people who were satisfied with a 42" TV screen now want an 80" screen since families no longer attend movie theatres any more & can't afford the prices at sporting events. Best to keep your options flexible.

    Thanks @Amanda Smith and @BeverlyFLADeziner

With our OP's situation it sounds like the modern way is to not only forget about the entertainment center but also anything that looks like an entertainment center. A pair of bookshelves or etageres flanking a console topped with a TV would look too much like an entertainment center, right? So a floor lamp and chair on one side and a tall house plant on the other?

If the photo posted is the OPs room, there is something strange happening with that tray ceiling not being centered on the wall. Unless we see the whole room it's hard to advise correctly.
