What to do with wall section between large windows in living/dining?

last year

We are stuck trying to figure out what to do with this empty wall section between large windows in the living/dining space. The architect intended that to be for a TV, but we don’t want a TV in the middle of the room so I designed the stairs to fit a niche on the side where the TV will go.

The room has big windows with a nice view, so I don’t want to take away from that. It would be nice to have some shelving in the room for books and maybe a bit of decor…

Thinking basic built in shelves, either painted to match the wall colour or maybe wood… there is already a lot of white oak with the flooring, island, stairs, slat wall at stairs, custom dining table being built. Window sills are walnut so it could be walnut. Maybe just white oak slightly darker than the flooring.

Other ideas?

Comparing the sketch to the actual picture is a bit confusing. (I think the angle of the picture is skewing the room size.) Is the yellow box on your sketch the same spot as the red box I’ve drawn here?

Do you own the furniture you’ve sketched in? Is that a tv on the other side of the wall for the stairs?

I'd furnish it first and then decide. The minimalist in me says it should be left empty (or maybe hang a piece of artwork). Your sketch indicates the sectional would end right there, so you'll need an end table anyway.

Why a huge sectional too big for the space IMO , what is the pic with the round tsble suppossed to show ? Usually when I have large wall space I am thrilled to have aplace to hang a large piece of art . I do not love shelving with stuff that often does not need to be displayed. Books I love but for me not really pretty to look at unless of course very oragnized So lets see the books itf you have lots.. You have a view but none of the seating really faces it . The TV is the boss in the LR not the view Waht is that rectangle in the middle of the space wth the 2 circles I think the view is what I would want to see so furniture that allows for that . IMO we need info as to how many seats for TV for sure . IMO oak and walnut do not belong toghter in the same space so maybe some idea about that choice and also the size of the new dining table since the one you show is really too big for the space visually You sketch shows corner window I see none . Where would you really put the shelving it needs to be thought out for both placement and what you have that NEEDS display .As the space sits the TV trumps the view You show furniture is that to scale in the space if it is it is pretty tight . As it looks in the pics that TV should have gone where the yellow box is and that would have opened up that whole space to enjoy the view and the TV

Where you have the TV under the stairs you can't see it from the Dining Room or the Kitchen.

It is very convenient for everyday living to cook or eat and watching TV at the same time. I would place the TV where the yellow box is.

The entry hallway goes right toward that orange box/wall section so no we don’t want to walk into the space facing a TV on the wall. The sketch is not to scale, the future fits the space well when to scale in 3D. Unfortunately that is just the floor plan we were left with as the architect didn’t really listen, and we don’t want a TV from the kitchen or dining. We almost had no TV as we can put one in the basement.

Although the seating is not facing the big windows, sitting at the dining table will have a view. And we wouldn’t really be sitting on a couch upright looking out the window, would mostly be laying down on the sofa if on it at all. Otherwise we would be elsewhere doing stuff like standing in the kitchen.

Yeah I’m torn between just putting art there vs. Shelving. We have a lot of books so it might be nice to have some there, but not critical I guess. Also don’t have a piece of art we like enough that we would want right there in the middle… most likely it will stay empty because I cannot imagine a piece of art worthy of going there.

The walnut looks very good with the oak floors because it pulls some of the darker tones in the knots. It’s personal preference but we like mixed wood species.

In the middle we got 2 armchairs but there is so much space we are going to put a sideboard behind them to divide the space a bit and have storage for the dining area. I hate the open concept but it is what it is.

I think the bookshelf could work there if you move the two side chairs back to where you show the console table and eliminate the table.

The chairs paired with the bookshelf in an L configuration creates the effect of a reading nook or corner. Add a floor lamp and a small side table or small ottoman.

In an open concept, create zones this way for different uses and it will feel cozier. Make pieces double duty, such as a backless bench instead of chairs on the living room side of the dining table...extra seating for the living room, and the two reading chairs can swivel so they can face people seated on the dining bench. Stuff like that.

If you are not going to use the sofa other than to lay down, maybe not at all why put such a large one in the space? IF you dont really want a tv here why are you putting one? You said a lot and it almost contradicts everything you are putting in the space.
