How To Make My Tuscan Style Kitchen Fit With Rest Of House

last modified: 3 months ago

We have a 5000 sq. ft "Santa Barbara/Tuscan" (more Santa Barbara than Tuscan) style home with all the floors done in travertine. (light and dark) We updated it some when we moved in several years ago but did not do the kitchen. I am really tired of this look but don't know how to tie it together with the rest of the house. All of the doors, base molding, and windows throughout the house are the same wood as the cabinets, so painting the cabinets doesn't seem to be the right way to go Thought of refacing them with a more modern door - perhaps flat panel, but they really are in great shape. All I have come up with is replacing the old granite and backsplash and changing out the hood to something different, but am having a hard time getting something that works with the travertine floors. I would love some ideas and/or pictures from others who have done something similar. I have posted pictures of the kitchen and few of the rest of the house for you to get a sense of the house. Thank you.

That was one of my thoughts too. Just wasn't sure that would make enough of a difference . Appreciate your input.

    I agree, it's not Tuscan.

Definitely ditch the backsplash (and possibly replace the sink with a single bowl stainless). You could replace counters if you wanted as well - depends on budget, and if you are happy with the layout otherwise. Your pictures are rather close up to tell. It's also hard to tell if the floor & counter go well together. In some pictures they look complementary but in others not so much. While maybe not on trend, your raised panel cabinets are understated and look like they are in good condition, plus the wood tone is very nice, so I wouldn't touch them (again, unless you want to do a full remodel).

Sorry about the lighting in my photos. The existing floor and counters go very well together, so I willl go get some sample tiles for backsplash options and see if that makes me like the counters more. And yes, the cabinets are in great shape and maybe a new backsplash will help me like those better too! Any thoughts on the massive hood?

We had a very similar kitchen that we updated with paint, new lighter counters, new backsplash and lighting.

The cabinets are SW White Duck and the island is Shiitaki. Counters are Taj Mahal.

    Here is the before:

Wow, your old kitchen is very similar to mine - I just have the polished travertine floors. Did you keep the rest of the home's wood finishes (doors and molding) or did you paint all of the wood throughout the house?

Go to a craft store and buy a couple of rolls of white butcher paper. Tape it up across all of the tile, and see how you feel about the kitchen with just the backsplash color gone. If things still feel really off, try covering your countertops with butcher paper too. Because you really don't want to put up a new backsplash and then decide you want to change the countertops too.

I would make other changes and see how they feel before attacking your hood. You have a really large cooktop there, so any hood you replace it with is still going to be pretty large, but less cohesive with your cabinets.

@Shelley, we painted the pantry door the same color as the cabinets and all of the crown molding. We left the other doors the dark alder stain. The house is in Scottsdale and has no baseboards (don't really know why as that is not a thing where we live in Ohio -snowbirds).

You do not need to paint the wood trim/doors in the rest of the house. Leave that all alone.

I would pull that hood and do a simpler one - maybe a nice plaster tapered hood up to the ceiling

You could paint the cabinets or just paint the perimeter and just leave the island. Can you take more pictures showing the overall room - its hard to tell what is really happening.

I do agree with changing the backsplash and the counters , if it is in the budget. You don't have to go with white. There are plenty of warmer tones out there without being as creamy/tan as it is now

I think the cabinets and hood look good and go with the rest of the house. The brown speckled counters and tan backsplash date the space.

The kitchen seems to complement the home nicely. I'm not usually a fan of the Tuscan kitchens but yours is not heavily detailed. I don't get the sense it's dated in appearance.

I agree that a replacement of the too golden backsplash would help.

Wood kitchens are always in style.

I would NOT pursue the direction posted above. A lot of money was spent and the results IMO are meh.

I agree with Beverly. I wouldn't paint your cabinets. Backsplash & counters only - and only do counters if you like your layout. If you just want a temp fix and plan to do a layout remodel later, don't do counters now. If you don't like your counters but like your layout, change counters too.

I don't love the hood, but I also don't think it's worth the expense to change it, and once you change the backsplash it might not feel so prominent. I think it's the wood trim that makes it stick out for me a bit but I'm not sure what else you could do unless removing the trim on the hood and painting a simple trim the same color as the rest of the hood would be ok design-wise? Not a pro and not great with details like that.

I would replace the counters and backsplash.

If/when you replace the counters, skip the laminated (built-up) full bullnose edge. Try to get slabs that are 3 cm thick and just do a simple eased/pencil edge.

Thank you everyone for your very helpful advise. Here is a more complete picture of my kitchen which shows the high ceilings and my massive hood. Main sink and counter is to the left just out of view. I like the idea of replacing the backsplash and hood, but if I were to do the countertops also any suggestions for what would go with travertine floors? I have considered Tahj Mahal, but it seems like everyone is doing that.

Do things step by step, and wait a week or two between each step. You might be able to get away with doing very little and making it feel like a big change.

    1. Paint the tile backsplash the same color as your wall. A designer friend did this as a temporary fix to the Tuscan kitchen in her newly purchased home. That was six years ago. It looks fantastic. If you don't love the look, then add a tile backsplash.

    2. Next add more visible hardware to your cabinets. Chrome will match the appliances, punctuate the cabinets, breaking up the sea of wood. Try it on just once wall of cabinets. Live with it and see what you think.

    3. Paint the wood trim on your hood the same color as your hood. It will really bring it out of the Tuscan look.

    Get new stools.

Your cabinets are nice. I agree to not paint them for now if you don't have to.

THat hood screams wrong on so many levels so miwould start there with a much more streamlined hood If you still want a wood hood it can be much less in your face . I like the rest of the space you have kind of a Barbara Beery style with is qute elegant So my idea would be a new stainless hood to match the fridge and instantly change the feel of the space .Maybe something like this . I don't think the cabinets are all that bad with the style of the rest of the house I do not think refacing would be the choice since your style is pretty classic not so much contemprary so wood cabinets make sense .The counters work with the floor and the cabinets but a large format tile backsplash would be a nice touch with matching grout a bit of classic but not subway .

Finished my beautiful updated kitchen. Thank you for your ideas and input. Thought I would share how it turned out.. We replaced the counter tops, back splash, fan hood and barstools! The existing cabinets now look so much better with he lighter contrasting materials.
