The cabinets don't look bad to me. Replace the linoleum floor and counter with something nice and remove the wallpaper and paint. There are a couple of kitchens in these stories that might provide some inspiration.

The other thing we need to know is your needs. Is there space for a kitchen table? Or is there a dining room convenient? etc.

We need to know the actualities of the space and your needs before a brainstorm can happen otherwise it's just a daydream that won't actually be helpful to you.

You say you are thinking of taking down walls. Which walls? Do they have mechanicals in them that would need to go elsewhere? Are they load bearing walls?

How many live in your house? Do you want seating in this room and if so for how many? Do you like a formal dining room and kitchen? Are there other homes in the neighborhood with the same layout and have you searched zillow to see what others have done to the kitchens?

What it is your budget?

Floorplan with adjacent areas will help show whether your later posts might be, help, where to put TV now that there are no walls, or, how do I hide my sink from the entryway view.

Also this is a good time to make realist lists of things about how you live and work, who’s in the family & what’s needed for comfort and convenience, have you yet discovered whether there are other more pressing repairs or updates needed.

Oh wow. I just went to look at the listing. That house is an adorable example of untouched MCM design! The kitchen really complements the rest of the home.
