Has anyone used Cotton SW 9581 on their cabinets?

I was planning to use BM White Dove for my kitchen cabinets, but my painter will only color match it to Sherwin. The color match looks nothing like the BM color so I am looking for a Sherwin alternative. Alabaster is the most recommended, but it looks very yellow/dark in my north facing kitchen. Pure White has a blue tint to it. After looking through samples at Sherwin I came across Cotton, but cannot find any photos online of it, it seems like a lighter Alabaster. I also think Snowbound may looks good, but a little more white than I was planning to go. My countertops are Calacatta Valentin. Let me know what you think would look better and if you have any photos of Sherwin Cotton, I would love to see it. (Anew gray is the island color) Thanks!

Sherwin should have all BM color codes and be able to match no problem, and vice versa

The problem is the bases are different and even when using the codes the end result is not exactly the same.

I took a White Dove swatch and painted my Sherwin Color match on it. The left side is the Sherwin color match, the right side is Ben Moore White Dove.

Whites often do not come out the same when we try to match to other brands. The base white is different and it throws the light/white colors off.

This is a good review of the Emerald SW whites including Cotton.

First is the painter actaully a cabinet refinisher becuse house painters are not usually cabinet refinishers . As for what thye use IMO you are the client and you use whatever paint you want but of course then the whole issue is on you but I never let a painter dictate what paint I can use .Paint companies can certainly try to color match but as siad they all have different outcomes

Thank you Patricia, you are right and I could definitely push the issue. I thought finding something similar would be easy, but now I can see how very different all of these white tones can be!

Jennifer I really appreciate this information, it is so helpful. I am going to order and sample of it and give it a test run in my space.

You shouldn't be using a painter, or house paint, to cover your cabinets with. You should be using a cabinet refinisher, and an actual cabinet coating. None of this is going to end well with the people you are involved with here.

He is spraying Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel. I have seen his work and it looks great.

Emerald is a trim paint, not a cabinet coating. It's what amateur homeowners use, because they don't want to deal with the more difficult and expensive professional coatings. It takes forever to dry, forever to cure, and is not nearly as durable as a 2K professional product.

I appreciate the info. I would still love to see some Cotton photos if anyone has some, thanks!

Minardi: "Emerald is a trim paint, not a cabinet coating. It's what amateur homeowners use..."

Both the Sherwin-Williams homeowner and contractor websites recommend Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel as the best paint for cabinets. However there are a number of negative reviews on the SW site and only "71% [of] reviewers would recommend this item to a friend".

Interestingly, Lowes sells HGTV Home by Sherwin Williams Cabinet & Furniture Paint which is also a urethane enamel. One wonders how similar it is to the Emerald product but $20 cheaper.

Watch for sales SW has good sales 30%-40% off several times a year.

Lowes products bear only a label name resemblence to actual SW paint. They don't have the same bases or colorants, and cannot get the colors right, in paint that is shameful to even carry the SW name.

We used Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane on our cabinets and they turned out great.

Sorry but trim paint is in no way cabinet paint seeing nice trim in no way tells you how he paints cabinets . I suggest you go see his clients where he did the cabinets becuase IMO that paint would be a no go for me. My question is more about why you are painting and what the cabinets are like . Often a good cabinet refinisher will bill you for almost as much as new cabinets so often I tell my clients to wait to do new . A poor paint job is a horrible mess to deal with so maybe show us your kitchen and BTW seeing this in someone elses space will not help you . I actually never like SW paints but many painters get a kick back so insist on it . This is huge decision and maybe the wrong one but we honestly have really no info about your space .

I do appreciate all the help with the paint type, but was really needing help with the colors. I am refacing my old cabinets. I am moving forward with Cotton, thanks!

I think that sometimes we forget that not everyone has a showcase home and that we all have differing priorities and tolerances. There are plenty of people who have had their cabinets painted with SW Emerald urethaneand seem pretty happy with the results. Paint Talk - where all the painters discuss different products - seems to be okay with SW Emerald urethane.

It may not last as long as some of the other finishes, but price and ease of application seem to make it a decent value.

I’m in the exact same boat! I was going BM white dove and the painter wanted to go shermin williams What did you end up deciding?

  • last month

I went with Cotton and had them change it halfway through. I am not sure if it was my lighting, but it had a strange lime green undertone to me. I went with Snowbound which I love (does have a slightly pink undertone at certain times of the day). If I had to choose all over again, I think I may have gone with SW Pure White just to avoid any undertones.

It’s so hard to pick colors! Thanks for sharing your experience.

    Here it is in Snowbound!

Looks good...white on white on white (including the backsplash).

The photo makes the upper cabs look yellower than the lower cabs so consider a cooler lighting temperature like 4000K for the ceiling lights.

The Snowbound will really pop. Or....it may bring out the pink, hmm. Experiment.

Thank you! I am really happy with the backsplash and think it is even prettier in person than the online photos! https://www.lowes.com/pd/Bedrosians-Cloe-76-Pack-White-2-1-2-in-x-8-in-Glossy-Ceramic-Subway-Wall-Tile/1000503951
