What does your contract have listed re: scope of work? A custom tiled shower/tub surround looks nicer than a prefab fiberglass or acrylic surround + costs more money to have installed. There are certain types of solid surface surrounds for tubs/showers that are nice - they are fairly expensive - but those aren't pre-fab ones like you are describing.

Also - while you are checking the scope of work - look to see how your tub surrounds are being constructed/waterproofed = important. While there are more waterproofing issues to look out for if you were having a custom shower pan built for a stand alone shower - but it's still important for a tub/shower combo surround. Example: how the tile/tub flange is handled + having the right backing installed for the tile = no type of drywall + either a surface waterproof membrane added on the face of the cement board/a waterproof board is used, e.g., Go Board/Kerdi Board/or a vapor barrier has been installed behind the cement board (not done very often anymore).

I had white 4x4 tile with white grout installed in two bath/shower combo surrounds back in 1996. The day that each of the surrounds were removed, both still were in perfect condition - the white grout was completely white (+ the caulking between the tile and tub was also white).

My daughters were responsible for cleaning their own bathrooms by the time they were 9 -10 - and they weren't great at it (I would deep clean every three weeks) - and the grout/tile/tub still looked good. They completely took over their bathrooms when they were 13 - and nothing ever changed re: how the white grout/tile/caulk/tub looked. Once they were teenagers, they took care of them completely - and still no stains (and my younger daughter wasn't the best at cleaning all the time!)

The grout and caulking available today is much more advanced + works better than the ones back in 1996.

I've never had a pre-fab surround except in a college apartment my senior year - I think that surface was more difficult to clean because we had to make sure that we didn't use any products that would cause any scratches + soap scum (bar soap is terrible for this) built-up faster on those surrounds than any tile surround I've had (and we were the first people to live in the apartment = the surrounds were brand new).

I use mostly Dawn dish soap + vinegar + rubbing alcohol to clean items in my house - nothing harsh. It's always been easy to keep the tile/grout clean.

When you go to sell your home at some point, having tiled surrounds will be more appealing than pre-fab fiberglass/acrylic surrounds to buyers. Also, fiberglass and many acrylic surrounds will turn yellowish as they age = not appealing to the homeowner or a potential buyer.

If you've paid for tiled surrounds, I wouldn't trade down to prefab surrounds instead. If you are concerned about grout lines (like so many people seem to be on this forum), you should select LFT (large format tile) for your surround in order to limit the amount of grout lines (although, IMHO that isn't necessary unless you like the look of larger tiles for your surround).
