Valentine’s Themed Table Setting - Table Pictures Added (scroll down)

last year
last modified: last year

February is my month to host the cookbook club luncheon. I would like to use my ”good” china.

And maybe a centerpiece similar to this

Does this combo say ”Valentine’s” or ”4th of July”?

I would probably also use off-white linen placemats. Matching napkins? Red napkins? Do the red napkins push it over the line into the Fourth?

Maybe pink roses and pink napkins?

Ditch the good china with its bossy blue band and go with the white on white china?

Pink is a great choice. Not being into VD, I wouldn’t overdue the theme.

Annie, I inherited my MIL red vintage set like your glasses. I have plates, glasses, punch bowl and cups. I was tickled to see your glasses for Valentines!

A pretty dish or pink glass bowl with Jojo's red foil wrapped chocolates would also look great on your table with your lovely china and the pink napkins. The vase and roses add a special touch not about the 4th, but in the context of the 4th of July would look appropriate and not Valentines-y! . Although I'm not decorating this year for Valentine's day given renovations, I always include antique and vintage looking cards like Allison posted.

The navy china is very beautiful, but to keep it away from 4th of July or Inauguration look celebration, I would go with pink over red accessories. Navy is a complementary color so of course it will all work together.

Love the pink and navy with your beautiful china! I am not a chocolate person but love the Louis Sherry boxes-- I didnt know they came in small boxes too!

Love the idea pf pink flowers in your blue and white vase with the china, very smart comination. I did not realize you were leaving in the afternoon and sorry we didn’t see you at the dinner. I enjoyed meeting you so much!! (and loved loved loved that JSC jewelry!)

The Louis Sherry chocolates in the pink boxes would be lovely. Regretfully, our group has an unspoken/unwritten policy against gifts. The competition would be tough! 😁

ETA: @Kswl, my SA hostess had invited some friends for dinner. I hate I missed dinner with my no-longer-imaginary friends! Thanks for the kind words about the JSC jewelry. Yesterday was its inaugural outing!

Love your china and agree with using pink rather than red. Totally understand the "no gift" practice but those little 2-pc Louis Sherry tins are adorable. We used those for party favors at my niece's bridal shower with a sweet personalized vellum inside. Makes a great little gift for a special event.

All this pink talk reminds me — I would like to see the ”watermelon console table,” pretty please?

The watermelon pink console from Strut.

The decorator who helped me ”refresh” the house a couple of years ago put that aqua piece on the table. It is a container Mother got a flower arrangement in eons ago. I’ve never been overly fond of it. Whaat is everyone’s opinion? Stay? Go?

P.S. Any ideas on how to hide the lamp cords?

Lunch is going to be pretty mundane. We are using a vintage junior league cookbook this year. I’ve shared the Maw Maw’s Chicken story here before*. When we chose the cookbook where it was published, I called dibs on that recipe. I’m going to deviate from the group rules (quel horreur!) and make Robert St John’s version with the homemade Mushroom Bechamel instead of a can of cream of mushroom soup. I’m waffling about making homemade chicken stock or using boxed.

I love the pink console table, but I would ditch the turquoise dish. A longish box of some sort would look good between the lamps. Did the decorator choose the lamps? I think shorter lamps would look better and not compete with the art - which is a great piece. The table is a perfect piece used with that art. The cords would bug me. Have you seen the "trick" using rechargeable bulbs and getting rid of the lamp cords? Some lamps you are able to push the cords up into the lamp (I never knew???). I can't remember where I saw the trick/hack, but some were removing the cords. I probably wouldn't want to do that.

The console sits a bit low for the lamps..too much space between art and top of console…I would remove the lamps and get a rechargable wireless picture light..I have them over my wall art and love them!..than add a set of candlesticks or ming blue and white pottery on top of that fab pink console to fill up space so the art and console have some kind of connection…more grounded and no wires showing!

The decorator was charged with shopping my house where possible. I’d love to use rechargeable bulbs, but the lamps take chandelier-base bulbs. I can’t find any that are rechargeable. Send a link if you know of some chandelier bulbs that fit the bill. P.S. They must be skinny bulbs. There is not much room under those shades

@Sueb20, love those wire channels and they may even be skinny enough to fit on the back of the base!

Bbstx I had a metal table built like that in my office (not as nice as yours and certainly not as pretty) with the same problem re cords. My table was black and I basically ran the cord along the edge of the table under a strip of black electrical tape and snaked the cord down the crosspiece, attaching it black coated wire, until it was close to the floor and then plugged it in the wall. That way no cord was visible hanging down the wall, it was all attached to the table. If you can use very small pieces of tape you would not be able to see it along the back edge, but you could use clear fishing line to attach the cord down the crosspiece.

    bbstx thanked Kswl

    Always liked that table!

I would lower the art so that the table lamps and art all read as one.

I see where she was going with the aqua accent piece, and I like the color w your table and painting. But the shape seems wrong?

    bbstx thanked mtnrdredux_gw
  • last year

Not sure how much light you need, but you could try something like this? I would fiddle around with things you have just to get an idea for the shapes and size that would work.

Middle of art should be around 62” from floor…if it already is should not be lowered..what is the height of the pink console?

You may find this useful, as I see the old rule broken fairly often, https://www.thespruce.com/tips-for-perfectly-placed-art-1976086#:~:text=According%20to%20the%20experts%2C%2057,Inch%20Rule%20for%20Picture%20Height

for example,Large pictures: A large framed piece over a sofa or sideboard relates more easily when hung so the bottom of the frame is positioned six-to-12 inches above the top of the sofa back or tabletop, centered relative to the couch or piece of furniture.

I don't mind breaking rules but you dont want to be looking at the top of the art when hung..common sense is needed for some situations for sure…balance and eye level for the most part is key..

You know when a buffet light barely fits, you’ve got a narrow table.

I appreciate all of the comments and advice, but I’m probably leaving it as is for the time being, although I may put the aqua thing back in the attic. The picture was mainly to show Sueb since she asked. (Look what you started, Sueb! This has “project creep” written all over it!)

I hoped that it would be a nice bright day to get some pictures of the table, but it was gray and cloudy.

I lucked up and the napkins came earlier than expected. I was able to get them washed and ironed by a reasonable hour. I had visions of my ironing napkins into the wee hours. They are a nice shade of hot pink and I was pleased with the hemstitch detail.

I have six of the upholstered chairs but we had 8 for lunch. When that happens I arrange 4 upholstered chairs and 4 of the barley twist chairs around the table.

The blue and white chopsticks holders didn’t make the cut. As I went through the courses in my mind, I realized there would be no need for them. I also thought about a tiny nosegay at each place setting for my guests to take* but decided that would make the table look crowded. I love to look at pictures of overdone tables, but when it comes to actually eating, I prefer a simpler look.

*I had a good friend who used her children’s silver baby cups to hold a nosegay at each woman’s place when she had a dinner party. It was such a treat to take home the tiny bouquet!

Thanks for all the help, support, and hand-holding!

Your table is beautiful! I love the colors— had a suit in the 1980’s that was pink and navy and wore it out. It’s so lovely to see someone using their china and silver ❤️

I have set our table for the Sunday after Valentine’s for our family dinner. It’s very similar to last year; I haven’t gotten out all the hearts and special accessories yet. The settings with preschool grandchildren are by necessity more engaging than elegant.
