The Elephant(s) in the room-new pix in comments

last modified: 10 months ago

Of course I bought them. That was basically a non-starter. They are in perfect condition with no cracks or chips and a perfectly imperfect (in places) paint job which feels very handmade. May I also add that they are extremely heavy?

So I know there was some talk of splitting them up, and usually I am very anti matchy-matchy, but I'm leaning towards keeping them together in this particular spot. This is where I envisioned them when I first saw them. And if I split them up, it risks seeming like I have surplus.

So, if they stay here, should they be facing forward or more on an angle? (and yeah, I should do a better folding job on the blankets in the cabinet.)

(that plate has beautiful koi on it and is supposed to be on the credenza, but it keeps migrating back to the table for the remotes--which I think we use only two.)

Or

The floor coloring, btw, isn't as orange as it appears.

Also, of course something should go on them, right? But then again it may veer into matchy territory. Do they need anything?

Thanks!

A nice pair of elephants. I think they are plant holders. They would look better with plants.

    Perfect by the chairs!

Spanish, your horses (dachshund-horses?) are great

Sue, I don’t think I fully appreciated before how nicely the sconces work with the tree branches in the painting

Love the final landing places. Just perfect!

And speaking of JAs, our housekeeper puts our TOASTER at a jaunty angle. No words.

@Sueb20 I did not! Great minds, plus limiting the box collection to the mantel means we have a finite collection, am I right?!?

@1929Spanish-GW....Those horses are FANTASTIC! I don't remember if there's a story behind them? Do tell....

I love the elephant table by the chairs...they will be an artful compliment anywhere they reside. love love love !

1929…well…I have more on the other side of the room…BUT they are contained to this one room. And I only buy them at one specific annual ceramics sale, a self-imposed rule so I don’t become a true hoarder of ceramic boxes.

Raise your hand if you looked for elephants on FBM today. 🙋🏻‍♀️

Ha! Sueb20. I did not look for elephants (and our FBM stinks), but these thread did start me looking again for one I had seen ages ago (Etsy- ETA: pick up or ship) and same item that is overpriced (in FL at least). I found one today on Chairish - on sale and shipping was not crazy. It will be here this week. We had horses growing up, and I have a rather large collection of equestrian related items.

Only problem, once my sister sees this, she will want one.

I love them as end tables! Good finds! Just found one on my FB Marketplace. It's a little larger than yours, 24x24x14 and is going for $300. The seller shows the same elephant on Chairish for $450.

The planters I saw back in 2022 are shown for $1100 each. Hurry while they last.

I was in our house yesterday and I noticed we have a brass one in the girl's bunk room. Who remembered?

ALLISON. I want one like that! Great find!

    Where will you put it?

Gigi, you feel my pain! A kindred spirit. Too funny, Wisteria has an elephant table and they suggest putting him on top of a console for a "jaunty" look. BAER

I wrnt to my local Marketplace, elephants everywhere!

We can all get one and it can be like a signal. If you walk into someone's home and spot one, it is a "safe house."

Jilly, I knew you would like it. I have no idea where it will go. Maybe the first floor den.

CircaWho has one (HERE), but it is SO overpriced. Pick up or shipping (HERE). She says it has been painted, but this is exactly the same as the other ones I've seen online.

Allison, thank you! I’ll keep looking now that I’m aware of them. Our big antique mall surprises me sometimes. :)

Sherry, you have to remember where we live. The elephant is the college mascot of THE University of Alabama! They are indeed everywhere. I’ll now have to go see what I can find that might appeal. Over the years I’ve had various smaller elephant planters outside.

I think the tops are too pretty to cover with a plant. Also, I see threads are doing that repeating post thing again.

I thought THIS (insta link) was hysterical about a Facebook Marketplace purchase. This guy, Eddie Ross, goes all over the place buying things for his Maximilist Studio which he uses for photo shoots and events. He supplies props. He is a character to say the least.

You never know what will happen on a FM pickup!

You may have to have an Insta account to see it, Im not sure.

I remember Eddie when he was on Top Design (Bravo). I don't recall if that was before or after he worked for Martha Stewart.

    last modified: 10 months ago

Yes, but none of the elephants were red OutsidePlaying,

I didnt know Eddie worked for Martha. Hard to imagine since they both have such overbearing personalities. He periodically has sales of his collections at his studio. No elephants, so far.

Just actching up with the new placement by the chairs and I do like that arrangement much better. Both attractive and useful.

I thought of this thread while looking through the latest House Beautiful … wicker elephant stand. I’d never seen one before!

I just saw one last week at a local antique store. It was larger than the one in HB.

Allison, not the same thing, but I saw this wicker rocking horse on Etsy today (that’s a link, wish they’d go back to making links a color). I just love it:

Haha look at the email I got from Chairish yesterday (I have never bought from them, but clearly they are stalking me).

I've always loved that rocking horse, Jilly. If I didn't have our childhood one (on its 3rd generation now) I would buy one.

That rattan rocking horse is charming!

I finally saw an elephant in the wild.

It’s at our favorite antique mall, $325:

If it had been a horse, it would be in my house right now. :D

Not sure I've seen on that color before.

My sister saw mine and wanted one, so I ordered her the one on Etsy. It was not packed well. In a Chewy box, wrapped in bubble wrap with "Do Not Drop," "Do Not Sit Anything On Top," and Fragile stickers. Why the dimwit thought UPS was going to handle it with kid gloves is beyond me! I'll spare you all the little pieces underneath these.

Oh no, Allison! I’m so sorry that happened! :(

IKR?! She was not happy to refund me, and wanted me to go to UPS which isn't the UPS or Etsy policy.

Bummer, Allison! Hopefully, the seller who so poorly packed it will make it right.

While in college, DBIL worked as a ”jumper” for UPS during the holidays. He swore that when the handlers saw a Fragile sticker, they handled it more roughly. Of course, he would never do that. He was just observing the behavior of others.

Wow, Allison! I hope she refunds you fully.

I have had damage paid for promptly by both Etsy and Ebay sellers, never a haggle about it. I hope your seller sees the light!

Allison...You have a good eye...that was such a beautiful piece. I'm so sorry that happened and hope you get a FULL refund.

I really liked that one too- such a disappointment to open a box and find it broken. I'm sorry for you and for your sister too. That is not the type of advertising etsy wants so they should make sure you are fully refunded quickly.

Thanks, all. She did refund me, but I had to say I would be opening a case with Etsy or disputing with my CC company. She refunded me with 24 hours, but not before sending me a not-so-nice message via Etsy.

Yes, my sister was disappointed. She is hoping I can find her another one at a decent price.

Allison, I’ll keep my eye out for y’all, too. It would be so nice to find one local to you! I’ve been looking on my area’s FB Marketplace, as well as my DD’s town a few hours south (and local antique stores).

@Jilly Look what I found today! It is in perfect condition. Unlike the one you posted from the magazine, his trunk is down...should have faced him the other way for his photo op.

Has a cute little tail. I'm going to use in the living room this summer. He may stay FT or go to the 3rd floor in the winter.

It pulls out the bit of light blue in the rug, and the color is seen through the French doors/on the screened porch. It will bring some accessories with more color to the area. I will probably paint a softer color eventually. I moved our os de mouton chairs to the MBR, making the living room less formal. Will see about swapping an etching too.

ALLISON! No way! You have a Finding Awesome Things superpower. 😄

He’s so adorable, I love him. That tail. :)

I meant to ask you on one of your threads if you kept those beautiful chairs; I’m so glad you did.

    Congratulations on your great find!

That wicker elephant is so cute!

What a shame about the horse - UPS is kind of notorious for breaking stuff.

And I'm curious what BAER stands for?

@Jilly, Thanks! One of the people working there today said "elelphants always fly out of here!" She said it had not been there very long. This trip started because DH's rocking chair had an issue, so I stopped by the store to look for him a chair. I told him I rarely see chairs there I like, but low and behold just a few booths down from the elephant was his new chair.

Oh, I LOVE those chairs. They will always fit somewhere no matter the house!

Thanks. Carol. I shop a lot online, my main issue has been with FedEx bringing canned dog and cat food. One case of cat food was dented to the point of it smelled horrible before I even opened it (outside) and had maggots. Chewy delivers in two days, so that had to come damaged from Chewy's. They gladly refunded. One wooden frame was broken, but that was packing error, just like the ceramic horse table.

Allison, I has that wicker elephant in my childhood bedroom, in white. Your blue one is so pretty! Apparently the trunk-up is good luck, and the down-trunk was definitely bad luck for my elephant, because we had a puppy that chewed it. Remarkably, my mother found someone to reweave it! It had a tray like in Sueb’s Chairish ad, we had a formica sheet trimmed to fit. But it wasn’t attached so I had to be very careful about putting things on it, and ensuring that something heavy like the lamp was in the middle.

    It sure was cute!

    Love that turquoise wicker elephant!

Jojoco, see what you have wrought… you are another influencer in our midst. And an artist as wel—-look what is above the bookcases on the left side of our fireplace, lounging happily with my blue and white ceramics and china: (You’ll have to click on the photo to see it well)

Thank you again for making those, they are a lovely, lovely memento of our GTG.

Oh, you guys! You bring such a smile to my face. I loved making them for you all.
